If that utility is a coop, then maybe you are a member. Why not check and assert your rights as a member? Consumers have all the right to complain under the consumer protection program.
New kilowatthour meter, especially electronics, are very sensitive to current that even when charging your cellphones are being read and registered. But usually they do not last long and get malfunction during peak hours. They even run faster when switching on your large loads.
During hot weather, electronics meter tends to run even more faster because of heat because heat loosen all its gears and movable parts.
If the electric coop did not attend your complain, then it is time for you to make a drastic move. Stone that meter or splash it with water so it will burn!!! |

Very easy, I pulled the plug, the power comany was there in 24 hs.
Don't do this again or we will refuse to hook you back up, Fine, don't.
But they did aYWy, and i cut the umbilical cord. Guess what? These mofo's never moved so fast when I had a problem before, but they got their overtime buttocks to my house right proper when I went to -o- usage.
Scam , for breakfast.........scam for lunch...........I don't got a clue but I sure got a hunch.

With the old (not smart) meters you can figure out if its accurate with just reading the kH rate on the meter and a stop watch. But the only way I would be comfortable with the accuracy of the "smart" one would be to have my own in line meter. |

because they didn't bill you yet for any electric they haven't ripped you off. if you had gathererd data till the bill arrived and the bill was double you could have made a good case as it is they can just blame faulty meter and install a working one and probably make you look nuts in the process. |

Why don't you actually put a video on youtube of the meter going double while connecting your haidryer. That way many many many people will see how you did it and could try the same. It could also serve as a proof in court if things get bad. |

Alright so the head engineer called me back today to tell me they had found the problem with the meters and said they wanted to come right out and show me.
I said, "where is the report I requested documenting the test results." He said, "well since we're a cooperative we're not bound by the utility commission laws and we don't have to provide one." I said, "oohhh reeaallly"....
"Well here is what is going to happen now... I'm going to call my attorney and we're going to file a lawsuit against your company. Then we're going to drag all 3 of you guys who preformed the test down for depositions under oath."
I said, "there is no way I am taking that smart meter back on my house and if you're refusing to provide me power if I don't take it I also want that in writing."
I said, "you provide me my report then we'll talk further"
and hung up on him..
I then sent him a series of emails which I'll post to this thread...

Just to be sure I went and measure the actual load the hair dryer is
pulling on my solar system. It was pulling 13 amps at 110v or 1430
watts. So it wasn't even pulling the full 1875 watts it's rated at...
Your new smart meter is without a doubt doubling my power usage

I have proof of this...
This is a serious issue not just for me but for everyone in the

I'm of the opinion that an audit needs to be done on all of these
meters you've installed across 20,000 homes so far.
If you'd like to come out I'd be happy to prove this to you in
person.

How does the programming is supposed to affect the readings ??
Either ...
1 - They did'nt test it before putting them in place, so a software bug might have gone unnoticed. But that mean they didnt do their job before installing them.
2 - The software actually does a calculation before printing out consumption. Which would mean they actually change the printed consumption depending on some value ( or "weight" ) they decided.
3 - Their software has a complex way of determining consumption based on some physical value that werent properly determined ( like keeping the value for a huge gas pump ) and so those smart meter are not fit at all for household usages.
4 - All of the above together, they simply installed it knowing it would overcharge you but thinking no one in their 20K clients would ever dare test it out. And for those (like Trin) who dared test it out, they had a nice script prepared to refute any claims of false reading.
Just one advise Trin, make sure to make enough proofs on your side. They might just easily be able to tweak a meter said to be "model" that work just fine and make the test on this one and produce false report that says "everything is fine, only your meter had a defect ... not our fault".
Don't trust any of the documents they bring. Even if it says you are right. Because maybe they will produce such a document that says that you are right ... but they will do it with something that can be easily proved as defect and so will be your claims.
For example: if they bring a report that says they actually calculated double consumption, you will say "good, I was right!!" but then they will come and say their report had errors for this and that and they will completely discredit your own test at the same time if you based your defense on "THEIR" papers. |
