WASHINGTON -- Saying global warming poses unprecedented threats to Americans' way of life, four of President Barack Obama's top environmental and energy officials urged the Senate on Tuesday to pass legislation to reduce the pollution linked to the planet's rising temperature.

The heads of the Energy Department, Agriculture Department, Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency told a Senate panel it should pass a bill similar to one the House narrowly cleared late last month. That legislation would impose the first limits on greenhouse gases, eventually leading to an 80 percent reduction by mid-century by putting a price on each ton of climate-altering pollution.

"We will not fully unleash the potential of the clean energy economy unless this committee, and the Senate, put an upper limit on the emissions of heat-trapping gases that are damaging our environment," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in prepared testimony. Salazar acknowledged that another Senate panel has already advanced a bill that would boost the amount of energy generated from renewable sources.

Its even worse than that... consider a point that was brought up in today's senate testimony: A country like China, who has lots and lots of money to throw around (which they usually use to buy US treasuries)... whats to stop them from instead cornering the market on energy credits? They are going to be traded on the commodities market, just like anything else. If China held the vast majority of these, they could drive the prices sky high for any US company wanting to buy the credits, effectively driving all but the cleanest countries in the US out of business.

THIS is why I wish people would shut the hell up about 'man made climate change isn't real'. It just doesn't matter right now. This bill has almost nothing to do with climate change, and proponents of the bill would LOVE to draw you into a discussion about climate change to distract from what is really going on here.

While global warming is a prelude to global glaciation, and political measures will probably accomplish very little,
we are setting-up for the future for those who survive.

Paying for the true cost of our development should be built-in to our fiscal systems, the many needed luxuries we enjoy, and the massive infrastructure our Western-style living needs has a cost for the whole planet, and this cost needs to be factored in.
Societies which don't cost so much could then be rewarded for their relative poverty.

Email response from one of my Senators, Bill Nelson. My message to him was that I would be voting against him next time if he supports this...seems he doesn't care.

Dear Mr. XXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting me regarding cap-and-trade legislation.

I am interested in cap-and-trade programs because they would let the market, not the government, dictate how to lower harmful emissions. I believe that we have the technology and ability to meet the challenge of climate change in a way that will provide new economic opportunities and make us more competitive internationally while protecting consumers from high energy prices and breaking our dependence on oil.

Global warming threatens Florida's fragile ecosystem and $60 billion tourism industry. Rising sea levels will encroach on Florida's pristine beaches and harm coastal wetlands and the Everglades. Increased carbon dioxide and water temperatures will damage sensitive coral reefs and endanger Florida's diverse marine species. A scientific study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded with 90 percent certainty that global warming is caused by the accumulation of man-made greenhouse gasses.

On June 26, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The Senate is expected to consider legislation to address energy independence and climate change in the fall.

I will continue to work in the Senate to fight the effects of global warming. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me, and I respect your views. Please feel free to contact me regarding any additional issues of concern.

Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson
