Is $600 a month too much to pay for groceries for 2 peo???
I was talking to a credit counselor yesterday, and he asked how much my husband and I spend on groceries monthly. I said about $600. He said that was an exorbitant amount to pay for only two people!!!

I told him that it costs us about $150 weekly and we usually cook everything from scratch, and that it was not "exorbitant" it's called inflation!!!

He said that we should be spending about $50 PER PERSON - per MONTH!! Then he tried to push a bunch of state and charity programs that "help with food, medical and prescriptions."

I told him that we don't need help with food, prescriptions or medical care... we were just having some problems paying our mortgage.

My question to GLPers is: Is $600 too much?!

It seems high to me. When it's just my husband and myself, I spend about 350 tops per month on food. I also cook from scratch and we eat well balanced meals. I live in the Northeast US which is pretty expensive.

We pay around $450.00 per month and we're in Tribeca, which is one of the most expensive zip codes in the world.

$600.00 per month is quite a bit.

I feed a family of 5, mostly from scratch, on about $700. Depends where you shop. AND it's cheaper for some things to buy in bulk. (things it would be crazy to buy if there were just 2 of us like flour & rice and fruit juice)
$50 is a little lean unless you don't buy meat & milk.

I have always cooked from scratch.

When cooking for two people I spend about $400 Max.

well how much of that is ACTUAL FOOD?

I can easily spend $100 week for myself and most of that is household stuff that u buy once a month. But, every week I run outta things that need to get bought.
Even when they are once a month things, they are spread out every week.

Actual Food = 50-60 weekly:
Milk Eggs Cheese Bread Cereal Tea Coffee Meat Veggies ect...

for 2 people cooking from scratch 600$ is a lot of money. but it depends what you mean from scratch...do you buy bread? canned veggies? I mean the shit to make a loaf of bread costs about 25 cents per loaf....if your buying bread for 2$ a loaf.....it adds up , but 600 a month is alot. I spend about 200 for me and I eat well, shrimps, steaks, good cheese....but when money is tight i can live on 25 a week and still not starve. 600 dollars a month is 20$ a day. so 10 dollars per person....seems pretty expensive for homecooked food. I mean you could have sandwiches for lunch , and spegetti and meatball for dinner and cost about 6$ for both of you that day.

Here in the PNW, groceries are outrageous because ALL employees (sans management) are UNION and their wages drive the prices wayyy up.

Everytime I have out of town visitors, they comment on how much things cost here.

that would be right cause you are prolly getting laundry supplies toilerties paper products light bulb and other mis stuff ..i think it would resonable at todays prices.. food is high, always has been.

That's about right. I say low handed. In my "grocery" bill I include toiletries also so I say your figure is realistic if not on the low side.

I rely a lot on donations, but if I were to put a price on it, I would say I go through about $100 a week worth of groceries. Just me. Of course, the more people you are feeding, the more you can lower your cost per serving too.

I made a HUGE bowl of antipasto salad a few weeks age, and that cost me over fifty bucks, just for that one dish. Granted, there was plenty there, but it wasn't a week's worth of food either.

Depends on what you are spending the money on. If it's fresh organic fruits, vegs, nuts like almonds & walnuts, probiotic dairy/grass fed cheeses, high-antioxidant/anti-inflammatory spices and whole grains, you're spending money on the kind of nutrition that makes for low to no medical bills and few sick days off work.

There is no really cheap food, even tho Americans like to think so. All you get when you eat the standard cheap processed factory-farm American supermarket food are lots of medical bills starting in middle age.

My husband and I are not over weight by any means. We have bought some chicks for egg laying here in the near future, and have a garden going. The costs should go down a little then.

What are you spending all that money on? My wife and I eat a lot of prepared food and feed our two cats, and we probably spend about $100 a week, maybe a little more.
