I think that was absolutely amazing and should be taught everywhere. I can't beleieve I have never heard of this. I am going to contact my community swimming pool and tell them about this and hopefully they can pass on this priceless info.

I have to agree though it was pretty hard to watch at first, you see a baby in the water and your instincs tell you they will drown. At the end of the video watching that kid float in the water I was amazed but also on the edge on my seat wanting to yell at them to get the damned kid out of the water!!!

2 thumbs up! Great post!

I think the point of leaving the child in the water was to show that for even 5 minutes your child can do this, and most likely longer.. If it had been a very short time, many might not have considered the technique as good as it is.

As difficult as it is to watch while the baby repeatedly re-adjusts and calls out, it would seem to me that there is an important factor to allowing some time to pass while they are in water, and that is this: in a real-life event the baby would then 'know' from experience that they have to keep doing what they are doing, even though it is distressing and even though some time is passing. If they are only used to doing this technique for thirty seconds, what happens to them after two minutes, or five minutes, or thirty minutes? They need to know that you keep going, and that can't be taught to them using words. They need the experience.

Yesterday afternoon a toddler drowned in the home pool here in Sacramento. [link to www.news10.net]

Any respect i once had for you is gone, WOW just goes to show you a pretty face can hide the blackest of hearts. wtf

I don't speak for Mister Obvious, but for my part, when someone witnesses what is akin to child-abuse, it has a way of bringing out our maternal/paternal protection instinct. If this person was my parent and was this passionate about my safety, I'd think they were a pretty cool parent.

Yes, and you can be a passionately good parent and be stern without all the name calling, and being nasty. Especially being a mod.

How sad..

and yes, I completely agree about the time factor..

And infact, the child didn't seem to be in terrible distress.. You would get about the same whine if he was in his playpen while you try to clean for a bit and he wanted out..

Great little smile when Dad finally scooped him up. :)
