The Ring of Fire is on the West Coast... well, part of it is, anyway. USGS theorizes that at some time in the future, the Central States (OK, IL, MI, etc) could be the scene of an earthquake worse than that imagined for the West Coast. In the early 1800's experts (USGS, University seismologists, etc) speculated that the earthquake that hit that area (Missouri, if I remember correctly) might have been in the vicinity of a 9.0 on today's current Richter. Most accounts from people at the time, likened that earthquake to the end of the world because of stories of structures being completely leveled, even folks not being able to stand up, massive dust clouds darkening the skies, etc. The wide-spread panic and fear also had to do with lack of communications at the time, causing locals to be cut off from the outside world until days after the quake. To recap, at least two major faults in the OK, Midwestern States (Meers, New Madrid, and poss others yet to be discovered). |

Quoting: DrPostmanIt is true. New Madrid fault line. [link to www.showme.net] Bulllshit. The Mississippi embayment with it's Reelfoot Rift has nothing to do with the geology on the other side of the Ouachita Mountains over in Oklahoma. You're right in that we are not on the New Madrid. However, activity from the New Madrid easily transfers to Oklahoma in the Meers fault because of the unique structure of the Meers. Running east to west, when the New Madrid breaks loose, the North-South jarring releaves tension on the fault, allowing the fault to shift more easily. The correlation between the strength of the earthquakes along the two fault lines are strong. We've had two quakes above 4.0 so far this year. Funny thing - that fault is only about 15 miles long. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 4896485 United States 11/07/2011 11:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | LMAO, funny everyone is talking fault lines and natural events ! I mean I have lived in Ok. For about 20 years and never has there been quakes like this, but I lived in Texas years ago and shortly after frak drilling started , quakes, bad water wells, and sink holes were close to follow! If you haven't heard, the epicenter started at sparks Prague, and meeker areas! Any questions about how much oil field frak work is going on there? |
Jam26 User ID: 4897671 United States 11/07/2011 11:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The guy above me is thinking exactly what I'm thinking. These fault lines don't connect to any major fault line and yet the quakes are getting worse. The oil drilling is definitely fucking things up! Probably best if they stop drilling now while they're ahead. What did they think would happen when they sucked out every last drop? That the huge underground basin would be fine? Wrong! Gravity always is working against us and all of that land above those soon to be empty basins is soon going to be a hell of a lot lower. This will be a lesson to Show many that we should have gone to cleaner energy when we had the chance. Goodluck! |
