Today begins the 2009 summer encampment at the Bohemian Grove. My husband is going, as he has for the last 31 years. (We have been married for almost 46 years).
I would like to offer information that might clear up some preconceived notions of some folks. When the ceremony to "Bury Dull Care" takes place at the beginning, what they are doing is burying the cares of the business world and getting ready to go to a "big boys" camp. Most of these men are very gifted and and many are the ones that keep our economy going. They enjoy excellent entertainment (I remember Gordon McRae and Dennis Day), listen to speakers from all areas of life, and have camaraderie.
There is a contingent of Christian men who get together and pray for the other members, each other, as well as what is going on in the world, etc.
As far as the weird stuff that is reported to go on, maybe it is with some members. My husband knows nothing of it. There are approximately 2,000 members and guests in attendance.
Scattered among those enjoying the fellowship of the Grove are a few retired domestic and foreign politicians and government officials (no active ones - that is against policy).
The information published in various newspapers and magazines is inaccurate, incomplete, and biased, according to my husband and campmates of his with whom I have chatted. According to these fellows: " it is unfortunate that all this phony, baloney is disbursed in news print by writers that have never been to the Grove (legally), because it is a fabulous organization that has been in existence for over 100 years, and provides great enjoyment for those that do participate, both young and old."
