I think I'm an alcoholic

I'm not into labels, but I feel the need to get buzzed every night. The few nights I tried not drinking I couldn't get to sleep so it draws me right back to the Whiskey. I don't want to be this way any more.

It's the same with weed I feel like I have to smoke. in fact be right back...

Do you want to quit drinking? It's hard, but definitely possible if you want to bad enough. To quit drinking successfully you have to really want to quit.

I quit 15 years ago myself. If you quit, I guarantee you your life will get better. It might take a while, but when you've been sober long enough you'll be so glad you are sober that you will never want to drink again.

I'm setting such an incredably bad example for my kids. This wasn't who I set out to be.

Your situation isn't uncommon. I think your bored. Try having sex at night instead. Or drink a crap-ton of water as a new habit, works for me! ;)

I've tried to quit and have no problem going several days or even weeks without drinking. I had such promise. A great job in the financial industry and then it all crumbled. I'm living on a friends floor because I can't afford to pay rent. My humor is all I have left.

Did you lose your job because of the drinking? Do you have to drink just to "deal" with life? Are you unable to go for a day without drinking? Does the drinking prevent you from functioning in a way you need to function or in a way you'd ultimately benefit from functioning? If so, you have an alcohol problem. Get some help.

If you had to go for a week (at least) without drinking, could you do so without a major crisis? If you could (and occasionally do), you're probably okay. Self-medication via substances which alter consciousness can be a good thing, in moderation. It's when those substances take over your life and volition that the problems arise.

Are you following any ideals? Or just sort of floundering from a lack of direction - thus defaulting into drinking?

I'm following an ideal, which doesn't include drinking every night. So it's a little easier.

Hard to find a good role model these days -- true. But, you get what I'm saying?

Though I'm a good looking male my self esteem is at an all time low. I jack off when I need to release, but have no desire to approach a female because really what do I have to offer?

Never admit that to a cop, a doctor, or a shrink.

You need a shot of testosterone, and a gym membership.

Take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle.

On the left side, write down all the good things about drinking.

On the right side, write down all the bad things about it that make you want to quit.

You have to get off "automatic pilot" to find your way out.

I'm pretty sure you are feeling like booze is an inappropriate use of your limited financial resources, and that you will need your good health both physical and mental to improve your situation and be a good father to your kids and feel good about yourself again.

Be selfish! Put your health first! Do something nice for yourself for a change! Quitting drinking would be doing yourself a huge favor, treating yourself well. Do you deserve that? YES! You deserve to feel good, you deserve to be healthy, you deserve self respect.

I'm a realist. As my previous posts most likely describe me to be. I lost my job due to the economy. I was laid off with a letter of rehire if things get better, and am being paid $520 a week to stay home and ponder the hand that life has dealt me. No I'm not wallowing in self pity about my employment situation, but moreover question why I can't put down the bottle. I hate the way it makes me feel in the morning and up until about 2pm every day I swear that night will hold the promise of no alcohol, but about the time 4pm rolls around I reconcile that reasoning in favor of a trip to the liquor store.

Do you go to meetings? If the answer is no, you're not an alcoholic - you're just a drunk. :5:

1 32 oz bottle of whiskey per night is excessive. I know that. Yet I can down a bottle of Seagrams per night.

Can you please use your mental facilities to imagine what you will do TOMORROW at 4pm instead of the default to drink?

Use your imagination facility to conjure up a new of actions right now. Rehearse them in your mind.

Not just what you'll do at 4pm, but what you'll do at 4pm till bedtime.

Your ego will certainly see the threat, and you'll want to drink at 2pm instead of 4. Be prepared using the same method.

When 2 or 4 comes around tomorrow, and your mental trigger to drink goes off, now you'll have a choice -- instead of the default to drink.

No meetings although I'm getting to the point where I think I should. What's even crazier? I can cohesively put together cognitive thoughts in this whiskey induced state? How crazy is that?

I coach my sons little leauge baseball team. On those days I obviously put off the urge to drink until 9pm or so. Is there such a thing as a controlled drunk? I never ever drink during the day, but only at night once I've determined the day is over. Yet every night I inevitably feel the need to medicate.

And don't wallow in self pity so much. If you have kids, thats a selfish luxury you should part with ASAP.

Dear God my friend turned me onto that about 7 years ago. For about three years it took me into an even darker place. One day I made the decision to walk away from it. My God it was a horrible drug.

No but I do need self respect.

It's called altered state learning. Some people really are better at certain things when they are drunk / high.

I'm talking to you real man. If you feel like you've abused yourself -- the only way to feel like a man again is to go through VOLUNTARY SUFFERING.

Work out till you bleed, go through alchi withdraw, starve yourself, whatever it takes to feel like a man again.

That's a scary thought. I've often wondered if that was the case. Most people I know get stupid drunk. That has never been me. Then again I'm sure most drunks think that.
