The Metro reports that a new program in Britain plans on telling teenagers to have sex or at least masturbate twice a day. The slogan one brave National Health service put forward lets teens know that an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away.
Encouraging masturbation as healthy and natural may solve many problems about guilt, but the unspoken assumption is that all teenager are sexual. If this lesson plan were proposed in the United States, religious groups and parents would loudly protest about the inapropriateness of the proposed pamphlet.
Former Clinton administration official Jocelyn Elders once said that masturbation should be taught in schools. She left her post soon afterwards. Great Britain and Europe may have more open attitudes towards sex than the United States but this plan will likely face opposition from British parents.
What this has to do with asexuals and asexuality is a little more complicated. The plan fails to acknowledge that some people may not feel the need to jump into bed with a perspective partner at every available opportunity, and unless the lesson covers that some people do not experience sexual attraction, it may ease the discomfort asexuals and late bloomers feel about their own identities.
The pamphlet claims that teenagers have the right to a fun sex life,according to the British newspaper Metro. (Read the article here.) Encouraging masturbation for health benefits is probably a good idea, but encouraging teens to have sex in an era of AIDS seems to be a plan that required a little more thought. At least they need include a section that tennagers have a right not to have a sex life if they so choose. Many asexuals choose the latter option, after all. [ link to www.examiner.com]
