I'm A Country Girl Getting Ready To Move To The Suburbs...Any Advice??
Well...it looks like we've finally found a place to move to. Our goal is to be out of our home before someone places a pretty red sticker on our front door. For those who have been following my posts, We are post job loss and pre foreclosure...husband found a job in the same industry making half what he was...he's been workng the night shift and commuting 2 and a half hours a day to get there...this move will put him only 7 minutes away from his job:)

I'm litereally a "hick from the sticks" lol and I'm honestly more than a bit nervous about this move. I'm a very nice person, and when given the chance will be there for others down on their luck, but I've also always been a bit of a recluse when it comes to making friends, so this is going to be a whole new universe for me. I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to the convenient city services that most city dwellers take for granted...around here the side walks role up at five o'clock and if you want any kind of decent shopping you've got to drive about a half our out of your way, and that's just to Walmart!

The good news is, I'm well aware of how "out of it" I am when it comes to city living, the bad news is, I just don't have a clue what I'm up against:(

Would love some advice! Thanks guys:)

learn to suck cock for money because when you cant afford to pay the high utility bills then youl need an extra income. and be prepeared to get sick form the city water. you will also need to get familiar with traffic, pollution, crime, drugs, late-night car and boom box noises, gunshots, barking dogs, and neighbors fighting drunk till all hours of the morning.

Hmmmm maybe I don't know the word for the area we're moving to?? LOL! Ok, moving to the Sierra Foothills in CA...currently living in the lower foothills, much more rural and country like...the area we're moving to, is a relatively newer town that was built back in the 1950's with a population of approx sixteen thousand and it sits above the fog line and below the snow line...the home is brand new and sits on a newly built neighborhood. The houses are close together, but not so close that they look the same as track housing. We're moving into a two story single family 3 bed. 2 1/2 bath. We're moving from an older ranch style home built around the same time this town was built. Our current home in on a 3rd of an acre, with much more privacy compared to this well manicured and possibly CC&R neighborhood.

We're actually looking forward to cheaper utilities, given the age and draftiness of our current home. Our understanding is that the newer homes are more energy efficient? Hope so! Where we're moving to there are plenty of strip mall type shopping areas and lots of city services and modern conveniences...hope that helps some.

My advice is simply to reach out and meet/talk to others OP. Your neighbors may be neighbourly or not pending on where you move to, but it is all a numbers game finding good people.

I hear you. We have done some homework on the area and checked out the crime stats as well as the demographics, so far so good:) We also plan on installing a home security system if the new place doesn't already have one. Fortunately we have a couple of dogs who are real good about alerting us to any one poking around. It will be hard for them to, as they'll have to adjust to not having a huge backyard to run around in. The new place has a back patio with a bit of ground around it, and a larger front yard, but there's no fence...it's more there for looks and landscaping purposes. I'm hoping there is no CC&R's because I'd really like to put up a fence for the dogs...

Compared to the country?? It's HUGE in my eyes! LOL! I'm not kidding you guys, we don't even have a freeway where I'm currently at. And our town has no stop lights. The nearest freeway is a good hour away. I'm real nervous about learning to drive in the city...I've done some freeway driving during road trips and such, but I've got much to learn:)

Depends on if you have to keep up with your neighbors, do things that they do, and live in such a community that you really don't feel like you have as much freedom and put up with some stress. It depends on the people, but it could range from anywhere to anything, like parties at neighbors, and them sort of finding out about you and putting up with them when you really do not want to, but feel you have to.

You probably will not like it, and may like it after awhile but depending on what type of person you really are.

All I know is that I would not like it probably, and think it is just too dumb in the end (although the people are not really dumb) and too game playish.

Good advice! That works well here too, so I've had some practice with that one;) Sometimes though I think I tend to give off the "too nice" vibe...will have to be aware of that in the city.

Thank you!! Will check these out! I've already been pouring over Google maps to get a general idea of the city, as well as been trying to Google any local papers/penny savers that I can find for the area. I've also did a Wiki search to learn the history of the town where I'll be living...thank God for the net! lol

I'm thinking that once we're all moved, I'll take a trip to their visitor's center...bound to find loads of info. there and maybe get a chance to meet some of the locals:)

Always lock your vehicle/home even when you're in it

Always carry your keys in your hand when in between buildings and car, they can be self-defense.

Always look around you, and be aware, not distracted by music, texting, etc.

Don't display indicators of vulnerability...eg:baby on board, grandma liscense tags, etc.

Just a few.....
