What are the marks of a sick culture?
"What are the marks of a sick culture?"

. . . abridged (by Bob God) from Friday by Robert A. Heinlein:

I took these quotes from one of my favorite Heinlein novels, Friday. They are all from a conversation between the main character and her "Boss." That conversation began with Friday's Boss asking her, "What are the marks of a sick culture?"

"It is a bad sign when the people of a country stop identifying themselves with the country and start identifying with a group. A racial group. Or a religion. Or a language. Anything, as long as it isn't the whole population."

"A very bad sign. Particularism. It was once considered a Spanish vice but any country can fall sick with it. Dominance of males over females seems to be one of the symptoms."

"Before a revolution can take place, the population must loose faith in both the police and the courts."

Personal rudeness.

... and the number one symptom that we're living in a Sick Culture is -

Bad manners.

That ought to narrow it down for you!

Maybe there isn't such a thing as "healthy culture" in a multicultural context, in this system culture is just an exploitable resource and entrepreneurial opportunity

The Nation that forgets God is heading for judgement. It would seen to me that the Muslim world is being punished first. In the Western world it seems pretty obvious to me that the USA is already feeling the Lords wrath, with the UK following as a close second. The Missing Day...

Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
Psa 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
Jer 6:2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate [woman].

I think apathy and scorn should be on that list too.

People seem to be too desensitized in regards of honoring life. Maybe it comes from watching too much graphic stuff in films - perhaps. But there seems to be a sense of uncaring for others and categorizing some groups of people as 'worthless', undeserving of compassion or respect.

I would say prison bars. They are over-flowing, but there's also another kind of prison. Loss of human rights to live in freedom.

I agree that a culture that loses its relationship with its god(s) is on the way to extinction, but it is this very fact that makes the Muslims so dangerous -- they do practice their religion, and they practice it with a lot more vigor than we do.

It is Islam -- although you and I may not consider it the "true" religion, it is obvious that the Muslims do -- which unites the Arabs, Iranians, Indonesians, Africans, as well as many immigrants from these cultures in Europe.

Christianity used to unite Europe and the Americas, but does so no longer. It's this, more than any other thing, that makes Islam such a mortal danger to the rest of the world.

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
The Historian Livy in about 29 B.C. speaks of Rome,

“…if any nation deserves the privilege of claiming a divine ancestry, that nation is our own; and so great is the glory won by the Roman people in their wars that, when they declared that Mars himself was their first parent and father of the man who founded their city, all of the nations of the world might well allow the claim as readily as they accept Rome’s imperial dominion.
These, however, are comparatively trivial matters and I set little store by them. I invite the reader’s attention to the much more serious consideration of the kind of lives our ancestors lived, of who were the men, and what the means both in politics and war by which Rome’s power was first acquired and subsequently expanded: I would then have him trace the process of our moral decline, to watch, first, allowed to lapse, then the rapidly increasing disintegration then the modern day when we can neither endure our vices nor face the remedies need to cure them…
I hope my passion for Rome’s past has not impaired my judgment; for I do honestly believe that no country has ever been greater of purer than ours or richer in good citizens and noble deeds; none has been free for so many generations from the vices of avarice and luxury; nowhere have thrift and plain living been for so long held in such esteem. Indeed, poverty, with us, went hand in hand with contentment. Of late years wealth has made us greedy, and self-indulgence has brought us, through every form of sensual excess, to be, if I may so put it, in love with death both individual and collective.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

I personally don't believe that everyone should be going along with everything everyone else does. That must be a very old book.

The "Majority" rules. Small weird groups such as gays, porn, militants, etc. etc. etc. are what set the world out of balance. IMO.

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
Excellent. I would add:

Poor treatment of the vulnerable: elderly, children, sick, women, disabled, immigrants, homosexuals, minorities, poor, and animals.

Environmental destruction.

Rigid religious beliefs and stereotypes.

Profit as a primary motivation.

Infidelity/divorce, lack of permanent commitment
