It is going to get real ugly out there. My wife and I are giong to go live with family for a few months like people did in the Great Depression to make things work and not get ass to elbows in debt. Fortunately we have the option, unfortunately not everyone does. I pray for the people struggling out there.

It aint pretty out there--at least I don't look to old-My wife dyes my hair LOL

At this point I don't think there is anything that can be done. The brakes are off on the freight train, it will have to run its course and do its damage before it derails and the rebuilding can begin. Until then, good luck everyone.

You know, guys during the depression would take black shoe polish and dye their hair to look younger and get the job. I saw a documentary about the building of the Hoover Dam and the man said he was turned down so took some shoe polish to his hair and walked back in and was hired. They didn't recognize him because all they were looking at was hair.

That's not to mention the people who were on unemployment and their benefits expired..leaving them still without work !!

Personally, I'm 47, I don't have a formal job, or very much money of my own . . .

But . . . I know how to restore a home and people who've seen my work are bankrolling me to BUY these foreclosures.

Some we're renting and some we're flipping.

Or the people in CA where max unemployment payments are only a fraction of most monthly house payments or rents.

Thank's for your indulgence...Let it roll on, there is a developing problem on the unemployment situation...Personally I have been off work since 08/08...in Wisconsin and I have just received a further offer to extend my unemployed compensation for another 16 weeks, I have been unemployed since July, 2008 (I have applied for job's every week but being 59yo there is just no response)well, it is unprecidented to have receive'd this much compensation in all the history of my employment...but to have read the article...there are many states that will default, along with the FED, to adjust...there will be a NEW WAVE of homeless...I think this will turn into a "civil revolt"...there is not option but to go after those that have more than you!!!


I'm glad you've gotten an extension on your unemployment, but at 63, I've been down the road you're on. If a person's over 50, it is tough to get a job - not impossible - but damn tough. Or if you do, they give you part-time to avoid giving you health insurance.
I think the government needs to create a new directive that all new hires, be it a fast food joint or janitorial be given to American citizens FIRST!!!! Part of our problem is, I'm sorry to say, all the illegal workers. I knew this would happen. I saw it coming and it promises to get worse.
I love all the talking financial heads waxing lyrical about the Dow at 9,000. Be careful folks. Monitor your stocks very carefully, particularly into Sept./Oct.

I think many of us are going to have to make our own way and not rely on getting hired.

Find a nitch, start a small business. Doesn't have to be a big deal. A hot dog cart in a business park, even. Anything to get by.

Sending your resume out to the few jobs available along with 100's of other people is just not going to cut it. You'll be waiting a long time, especially us middle agers.

Can't rely on anyone but yourself now.
