so let me see if I understand this. You enter into a contract... a promise to pay....and then you breach that contract. And somehow you think you are entitled to keep your car. I hope your kids have a different role model

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
ok first off i wanna tell you repo men have bills to pay an families to support also,,it's just a job to them..nothing personal,,ok first off i am a repo man an have been for many yrs,and now it's not report,,it's collateral recovery agents,ok first off if you owe money on any vehicle or equipment it's not your's an you don't own it,your making payments own it to some day own it then not now,,so who ever name appears on title as lien holder is the legal owner of said vehicle, an also yes you can go to jail and or prison for with holding ,hiding or refusing to relinquish said vehicle since your or not the owner it's conciderd theft,,it's simple just dont buy a 30,000 car on a mcdonalds salary, you know you cant afford it,,put it this way so you can understand it,,,you sell your best friend or relative your vehicle for 100,00 a week an they pay for a few weeks then stop paying you,how long are you gonna let them keep an drive your car an there not paying you,,not long i assume so now you tell them give me the money or i want my car back right..well hello, there you go,we can enter any place of residences or business or property to retrieve an take into custody anything used for collateral.if you read your fine print on your contract it tells you that an you signed a leagal document saying ok and u understand an agree to it,,secure apt's security guards or gates will not stop us from getting it we have the right legally to get it.most of us try to be adult an cival about it but trust me dont take kindness for weakness,,you'll get hurt if you try an hurt us an then you'll go to jail for sure,we are state licensed and bonded an insured so yes we do know the laws, please dont listen to one of your so called know it all friends telling you dont worry about it they cant do anything to u,,also just so u know,,if u owe say 10,000 on car and it gets repo'd an sold at auction for 3,000 the lien holder gonna sue an garnish your wages for the difference owed on it,so if u want to tear it up burn or wreck it take parts off it your just hurting ur self,,,,,,,

So your being unable to make car payments is the banks fault how? You signed an agreement using the car as collateral for the loan. You are an adult correct? Understand what a contract is?

If you cant pay, dont make a repo man find your car. Let them have it and run your life in a responsible manner.

You could have bought something outright for $1000. Instead you bought something you have to pay for for years and now you whine that somebody wants you to actually pay for it.

Of course this thread started in 2009, so who cares. Buy used you jerk!

Know what a skip tracer is?

They WILL find you.

It matters not that they don't have your current info.

They WILL find someone who will give you away.

Absolultley! You can run but you cant hide. Repo men love their jobs and they will find you .Hiding it only makes it more of a challenge and chances are they will get you at the most inconvenient time for you..

Go to the junk yard and get a ignition key cylinder and then put it in place of teh old one. You will be able to start the car, but a repo man won't have a working key. Won't stop him, but it may slow him down a bit.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 642285

This advice won't work. The repo guys have one guy who gets into the car with lockpicks and picks the locks. Also they can just pick up the wheels and tow it away with the towtruck that is disguised as an ordinary truck.

They are not immune to breaking down either, and they lose half their value when you drive them off the lot.

Yes, but you COULD always drive to a REALLY REALLY bad part of town and leave the car unlocked with maybe an extra cut key sitting on the dash board....

then go get a bite to eat or drink close by and when you come back to get the car.... OOPPPPSS

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
First off, I have never bought a car on financing and I never will, ever!

I usually pick the most common vehicle on the road, and go buy one at auction. Usually there is something wrong with them but with a little money they run fine. If someone keys the vehicle I don't care, if it blows up, no problem, I just go back to auction and buy the same vehicle and use the last one as parts.

In the last 15 years I have owned 4 vehicles, all valued at about $1000. They run fine and they lasted a long time. Currently I am driving a highly reliable Saturn 92, and it has about 340,000 km on it. Because the body is made of plastic it still looks like a new car, and by always using dura-lube engine treament it still runs awesome.

Many times I add acetone to the gas, it changes the combustion of the fuel by changing the surface tension of the gas. And it always runs smoother.

On the topic of avoiding skip tracers it can be done, but you have to be willing to do the following.

1. You MUST COMPLETELY 100% DE-LINK YOUR NAME FROM YOUR LIVING ADDRESS. In other words all correspondance with you must be where you do not live. Secondly skip tracers will conduct criminal activities to find you, they will pose as cops in order to get the police to give out information about where you live. They will call your mother and tell you that they owe you money, or that a friend of yours died and they need to contact where you are. They will call your bank, or your friends, they can con the phone company. None of that matters if you followed rule #1 and nobody knows where you live.

So *everyone* that knows your real address must be sworn to secrecy as to where you live, no exceptions! Either that or they need to be simply lied to as to where you live, and never have them visit you.

Myself it would be very very easy to loose skip tracers if I wanted to. Nobody knows where I am, and that address changes every time I go on days off. Sometimes I live in three places in one week, and I love it. I have never been so free. But as far as anyone is concerned my only reference is a post office box. If I was to rent a room, I would never sign a contract and just pay cash.

The only method to find me is to illicit the cell phone current linkage, which would be easily shut off.

Personally myself if I was you I would never fight them with their system, simply give the car back, and then immediately after declare bankruptcy. Now the system has firewalled you from their collection, and you have returned the car. Their going to walk from you. Get a cheap older car, and pay cash, and just maintain it

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
I have a friend, who, with the help of his lawyer managed to keep a leased car (a Range Rover no less) for more than three years after the lease expired. He insured it using someone else as primary and listing himself as secondary and showed no lien holder on the insurance docs.

The state he lived in allowed him to pay for his plates 2 years at a time. Which he did. And then promptly reported his "ORIGINAL 2 YEAR PLATE" stolen or missing. And he got a new one. Then he took the new one and put it in the trunk and ran with the "old/missing/stolen" plate on the car. A repo company coming across the car could not match the plate. He had the VIN changed by an artist friend who did a small bit of painting on a piece of cardboard to make it look like the VIN viewed thru the windshield.

Anyway, he drove the car for three full years AFTER his lease expired. (Oh, and he didn't pay the last six months worth of the lease, either.)

Because the company gave him the car and never sent him a formal request ASKING/DEMANDING the car back, he was in the clear from a criminal standpoint. (The leasing company was too busy trying their usual repo services to be bothered asking him to surrender the car. Their mistake, not his.)

Two years later he filed a bankruptcy and the entire deficiency amount was listed and discharged.

There are LOTS of ways to obscure cars and given the deals, interest rates, and fuck-you financing deals, they sort of get what they have coming now and then. Just keep it insured and don't admit there is a lien holder to your insurance company lest they send a notice of insured interest to the very company you're trying to "avoid".

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
If you can't afford to finance a car, then don't do it. Pretty simple. You can buy perfectly reliable used cars for less than $1000. I've done it. Then I saved up what would have been spent on car payments over the next year and bought a newer, nicer vehicle. I could have talked my husband into getting me a new car, but that would have been stupid. They are not immune to breaking down either, and they lose half their value when you drive them off the lot.

You should have read your contract before you signed it, and not put your John Hancock on it if you had a beef with how much money they were making off of you.

OnStar

My advice. Just call the finance company and ask "where do you want it?" and then drop it off.

It's easier to just face the facts, and deal with things as they are rather than trying to skip.

OR.... you can also file for BK and any repo action is stayed pending a ruling by a judge. You might want to talk to an attorney.

Just say'n.

dont let them get it...they will auction it off sell it dirt cheap...then come after you for the balance.

if you cant hide you need to try and sell it for close to what you owe then be better off

i feel you..i had a dually that got repoed twice.
it was costly to get it back

not to mention it jacCKed up my credit
i am in construction have no car payments
but no work either!
good luck

dont do anything illegal

CRIME RUNS THE WORLD and any body that does not know this is a fucking moron. I steal anything I can get my hands on as long as it hurts big business or the gov. I never take from small people!!! Sell the car to a chop shop or part it out yourself and sell on ebay. The pirates in Washington bring in the dope then lock up people on the backside. 59 billion missing from HUD and nobody knows what happened to it ? 2.5 Trillion missing from the PentaCon and nobody knows where it went ? 19 Saudis execute the most sophisticated terrorist attack in history and THEY ARE STILL ALIVE ? even though they found Attas passport untouched on the street HAHAHAHAHAH! You got to be kidding. The only people that play by the rules now are the cowardly fuktards that still believe the brainwashing they received while watching Leave it to beaver and the mickey mouse club. In Detroit, it is common practice to buy a new car and make one payment and get the bs 30 day insurance policy, then report it stolen and drive it for one year until your insurance papers expire. At this point, you sell the car to a chop shop and go get another one. I lost my political virginity and got my eyes opened while in Special Forces in Viet Nam.

My late Brother in law owned a skip tracing business and you'd be surprised the resources they have at their disposal for locating people. For one thing if you are using a credit card or ATM card for cash, better stop. They can tap the records of your accounts and see where you have been hanging out.

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
Lots of great info here. I HATE my situation but it is what it is. Ive had my car over 14 months without a payment. They have sent multiple repos for me and I always answer my front door and politely tell them "no thanks". They get easily frustrated and spout illegal stuff. One time my brother in laws Challenger was parked in my driveway and he said "better not drive that Dodge...I'll take it". I told him its not even my car and to go ahead and take it right now...he didnt. Details aside NOBODY but me and my God know my story. Cancer, job losses, a child of mine was raped...so yes, my car payment became second to dealing with these things. Banks and repo guys dont care, its not personal to them. If it were,no cars would be repo'd. If you have half a brain and have the emotional energy to do it, you can legally avoid repossession for a long time. However, it simply gets tiresome and wears you down.

where I have the problem is this- Nobody forces anyone to become a repo man. Nobody made them take the job. They CHOOSE to do it.If nobody took the job, there would be no repos! In all seriousness, repo men will meet their maker someday. They live a life constantly trying to justify what they do...ignoring who they are hurting. They brainwash themselves into thinking somehow they are right because "the debtor owes the bank money fair and square". It doesnt work this way. You are hurting people. There isnt a single lein holder right now trying to figure out what to feed his kids for dinner. They are all set. They do not care about what has happened to people...they dont care how it happened...they dont care period. They only cared when they approved the loan with an interest rate. All you repo guys have whats coming to you. Wake up and really THINK about what you are doing and who you are hurting...then go get a differentwhatever job

Re: How do repo men find your car if the finance company doesn't have a current work or home address?
I had repo 15years ago. Phone company. Friends, old . Current gf or bf, parents etc they call them make up bs story to contact you. And drive around the city spotting cars, they have staff thats their job drive around and spot plates. Here is the law they can repo it on a street, in your drive way but they cannot enter your house, garage if closed and locked. So how you avoid repo. Sell it to chop chop, report it as stolen, insurance will pay for it. Thats fraud btw. O and if thats what you will do keep the org keys, give it 24hr, then go to mall and report it. Hard as hell to beat repoman but it can be done, be smart.

So again... your being unemployed and possessing no marketable skills is the banks fault how? You think the bank 'owes' you a free ride? You think you were somehow taken advantage of by the bank when you got your car loan?

Be responsible, not another bottom feeder.

It is obvious you have zero skills buddy.
You will still face legal action called a civil judgment which will follow you and your crappy credit history for 10 years.
