We just got a new kitten today, and it has fleas! My older cat is allergic to them (she's indoors only)
Any natural remedies out there!???? Quoting: CRYSTAL in MATRIX
Give the kitten a good bath, use shampoo that wont strip his skin of all his natural oils. You can mix Avon skin so soft with water and spray the kitten with it (avoid getting solution in eyes)rub it in. This will repel new flea from your taking up residents on your kitten.
The same day vacuum your house thoroughly, even under coach cushions, throw-rugs and all other surfaces. Do not treat tops of cushions, bed or any other places you sit or sleep.
Treat carpet, hardwood, linoleum, rugs(above and below) along baseboards or any other cracks and crevices ect.
Find your self a good flea spray that includes a IGR (Insect growth regulator) in it.
Ultracide aerosol works great.(Wear gloves, mask and read the product label) [link to www.domyownpestcontrol.com]
Be prepared to vacate the house for a few hours after treatment. Before you re-enter with kitten make sure spray has completely dried and there is no odor present. Vacuum as much as you can stand after treatment and empty vacuum bag outside afterwords.
It can take over a month to get control of fleas after spraying. So do not respray for at least that amount of time.
Again always read the product labels before spraying any insecticides.
If you need anymore help reply to this post. :) |

Phenothrin and Pyrethrum = Nerve agent. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 706068
Phenothrin is deadly for cats. That was the chemical in Hartz flea killer.
It's safe for dogs.
I had cats about 30 years ago. I used a flea soap but I cannot recall the brand.
Diatomaceous earth might be the best way to go: the substance has sharp edges that cut the insect's body and causes it to dry out and die.
Phenothrin and Pyrethrum works great on garden insects. Slugs need to be cut in half with a sharp object. |

Purchase a little oxygen tank that lasts for a few minutes. Place it over the kitten's mouth, then completely submerge the kitten in water for a couple of minutes. Hopefully that should drown the fleas.
Worst case, shave all its fur off. |

I use iodine all the time when fleas are a problem for my guys.

Wash it. I know that cats don't like being washed but I have washed one of my cats when it had fleas and it worked like a charm. |

THE FLEA PRODUCTS FROM THE GROCERY STORES ARE THE TOXIC ONES!!! If you get your flea control from an animal hospital, they are safe to use. AND effective. Don't get those flea collars that the grocery stores sell, they are toxic.
All you need is 1 dose of Frontline or Revolution. It goes on the skin between the shoulder blades, and works it's way on the surface of the body through the hair glands. They work for 30 days to keep off fleas, ticks, ear mites. And usually if the pet is infested with fleas, they are also given a Capstar pill that kills all adults fleas instantly, and then the Frontline works to kill future hatchings, because there will be eggs to hatch later on.
You can try the natural stuff, but if it doesn't work, get something that is safe and works. |

United States 7/30/2009 3:34 AM | | Re: HELP! New 7 wk old kitten has FLEAS! | Quote | Please use these two products for your kitten to kill
fleas;
1. Frontline for kittens. It is made of pryethrins.
It is very safe and will not kill your kitten. You
have to make sure it is for kittens UNDER 10 weeks
old and the right weight. You can buy it at Petco
or Petsmart. Please check the weight and age on the
box, though.
2. YOU MUST DE-WORM your kitten. Fleas and worms
go together. You will need to take the kitten to the
vet and they will give it either a de-worming shot or
a pill.
Take care! |

Diatomaceous earth, used it on some new born pups worked great. Just keep away from their nose and mouth Quoting: Anonymous Coward 724894
Agreed! Use Food-grade diatomaceous earth. We don't have a problem with fleas using this. We have a 10 yr. old Pug and a 2-month old kitten that are flea free. Check around at the feed stores for this and ask questions, read about it on the internet, and the directions on the bags. Works like a charm! |

Bathe it in a bath with Dawn dishwashing liquid.
I've heard that kills 'em.
You might have to do it once a week. Quoting: Mister Obvious
This is absolutely true.
Used it myself.
However you said NATURAL remedy.
Got one for you:
Crush touroughly raw garlic cloves into olive oil.
LOTS of garlic and oil.
At least 8-9 cloves into 1/4 cup oil.
(It worked on my baby goats. I had an organic dairy.)
Rub thouroughly over kitten and comb out thouroughly .
The garlic murders fleas dead as rocks.
Bathe kitten gently after. |

Be vigilant about picking off the ones you see. Immerse the body in the water and the fleas will go to the kitten's head.
No need to use poisons. |

Please DO NOT use flea products on the kitten. I did a horrible thing once and killed a kitten with flea powder. It was awful and to this day I regret it. :( I was real young and didn't know how toxic that stuff is. Quoting: XLR8
yes do NOT use any store bought flea products... i gave my cat a bath in flea shampoo once and she had to be in the vet for a week and almost died from posioning. the vet told me to never use that stuff from the store on ANY cat. "I'm just like you...just not as cool"
