Re: Earthquake 6.3 Indonesia
EQ's are strange beasts.
I was only 50 miles from the epicenter of a quake they said was 7.8 a few weeks ago. Only felt a very gentle swaying even though the quake was only supposed to be a few miles deep. I've flown over that area since - no landslips, no visible damage at all. There were no damaged buildings, not even broken waterpipes. Strange.

Did you know that Fiordland moved 300 mm (12 inches) closer to Australia during that episode?

I heard that, but there was an expert on the news saying that isn't really accurate. The quake actually lifted the land mass near the epicenter which is the cause of the 'shift' - it would be more accurate to say a tilt or twist. Thats why I said they are strange, this one can lift a land mass but cause little damage while a sub-6 quake in China can kill thousands.

Yes, that particular earthquake (Fiordland) was unusual in that there was so little damage for one that measured so large.

Re: Earthquake 6.3 Indonesia
I couldnt sleep, woke up and saw this quake...
What is also unusual is the timing... and the type of "roll"...
I work nights so I should be sleeping! LOL

I hardly wake up like this... hopped on the computer and first thing looked at the EQs, tho I contemplated getting up for over an hour and than gave up! So here I be...

Peace

It was measured at a depth of 12 kilometres.

The agency's technical chief Suharjono said there appeared to be no damage or injuries reported yet.

"The tremors, which lasted less than a minute, were strong enough to cause people to panic. They all ran out of their homes," he added.

"But so far, we have not received reports of casualties or damage to buildings," Suharjono said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Re: Earthquake 6.3 Indonesia
People in the deep south remarked on this smooth rolling movement under foot stating it went on for well over a minute.
Perhaps it was a smooth sideways slippage of plate movement instead of an upward violent thrust.
