A fe weeks ago I cracked a molar. I went to the dentists and he put a temporary prcelain filling in it. Its come undone and now I cant chew on that side.

Is it possible for a cracked too to be healed as I really dont want to lose the tooth. It comes in real handy for things like chewing and such.

You can buy a temporary patch kit from a drug store. I don't have the name of the stuff handy.

The temporary filling stuff is called Tempra.

If you follow the instructions to a T you should be able to patch it up until you can get to the dentist.

This happened to me- they had to grind it down and put a crown on. That has worked good so far. About 6 months ago now. So far so good.

Instead of having it pulled tell your dentist you want it repaired. He'll probably want to pull it because it'll be more profitable for him but the choice is yours. I would chose to have it repaired.

The dentist will invent some theoretical reason why the tooth should be ground down and capped. It'll be up to you to make a judgment call on his reasoning - is it a plausible danger or does he just want to do what's easy and profitable for himself. No capped tooth is going to feel as good and satisfying as a real tooth IMHO.

Usually a broken molar means you've just broken off one of the cusps. If that's your case have the cusp rebuilt out of amalgam.

Re: If you have a cracked molar is there any way to fix it..or does it need pulling?
It depends on how the tooth cracked and if the potential exists for it to continue cracking or to crack again.

HOW it happened may be the biggest factor. If you got punched the face (or similar) then it is likely this is not a tooth decay/weakness issue.

If however you did it eating regular foods or normal activity then the tooth itself may be shot and you may want to seriously reconsider having it pulled and have done with it.

Capping, filling, and all of that is ok, if the tooth itself is strong enough.

The fact is you had a Temporary repair done and you got a temporary life time out of it. Now you need to go back and get a permanent repair done, or have it pulled.

Unfortunately teeth once grown do not self repair. Mechanical fixes (throwing cement at the problem) is the only real fix we currently have. In a few decades if stem cell research is worth its salt it may be possible to grow (repair) new tooth material on an old tooth. Of course right now that is medical theory, not medical fact.

He might tell you your tooth have microscopic cracks in them that increase over time and weaken the tooth. My view on that is we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. If it is broken just repair the break, don't replace the entire tooth if you don't have to.

Re: If you have a cracked molar is there any way to fix it..or does it need pulling?
This is how it happenned.

I had a very small filling in that tooth. It fell out but I did not feel it happen because it was so small.

I was eating a hard nut..or something hard..and a peice of it wedged up into the small gap left by the filling. It acted as a wedge that split the tooth.

The pain was incredible...did not sleep for days.

Got to the dentists thinking I had a bad abscess or something. The exray showed what was left of the filling. He said my tooth was cracked.

He whacked a temporary patch over it..worked for four weeks but the other day ot came apart when I was biting dond on a chunk of meat.

Now..I think its fucked.

It hurts but only if I chew on that side. In any case..I might just get the damn thing pulled out as I dont have a lotta cash. Would not be so bad if it was my fourth molar..but its the third one and there will be a gap now.

Oh well...

And your return date was????

Had to have been less than a month, those temp fillings only last about a month with normal use, a little more if you chew carefully.

Get thee back to the dentist and have him drill, fill, plaster and cap the darn thing before you end up losing several teeth due to massive infection of molar and jaw.

Shew - go - now.

Have the crack ground out or it will always cause pain. Pulling the tooth should be a last resort, the rest of your teeth will move toward the gap if you don't put somthing in its place and your bite will be shit in a few years.

They can rebuild it! really, I had 1/2 a molar missing and they wanted to give me a crown. I told him I couldnt afford it and the doc reluctantly told me he could 'try' to build it up with that stuff(?). It worked and it held for 3 yrs now.

Have them put a cap on it. I hope you have dental insurance -- it's not cheap. The cap I got last spring was over $700! Don't wait too long, though, or it will become infected and you will have to have a root canal (unless you have it pulled).

Re: If you have a cracked molar is there any way to fix it..or does it need pulling?
Have had several molars break due to silver fillings expanding over time, crowns done. Been told by dentist if there's enough remaining of the tooth they can usually crown it. If not they can do a root canal, build it up and crown that. Been told by an endodontist if the root is cracked then a root canal can not be performed and the tooth has to be extracted. Good luck.

Re: If you have a cracked molar is there any way to fix it..or does it need pulling?
If your tooth is cracked do not try to do a root canal and crown it. It is just a big waste of money. Trust me I have been there and done that with two molars and I wasted 3,500 trying to save a molar that just had to be pulled a few years later. Now I have to spend $4,000 to get a dental implant. What a big joke. I will end up spending $ 7, 500 on one tooth. What a scam. Cracked teeth can not be fixed and if they do then it will not last long trust me. I have cracked three molars and had to have them all pulled now. Implants are the way to go if you have $4,000 per tooth. yeahsure

I have stopped going to dentists, because the teeth I have lost were the ones that got full of fillings and crows. I just let them wear off and they are fine, not pretty but fine. I think it's necssary to keep your root, don't have it pulled unless it is decayed down in the root and maybe not even then if you can treat the infection.
