The folding stock seems good for compactabilty. Quoting: PharmacistPortability is the only reason to think about a folding stock. As I stated way back in this thread, keep the buttstock on. Typically even in a home defense situation a shouldered shot can be taken. And if you have to shoot from the hip/side (practice, practice, practice!) you can clamp the buttstock down with your arm/elbow. |

Wal- mart has it for $277. Quoting: Red Auroras 736635Heh heh what time and which WM? probly on my lunch break, I called the one in olive branch because it's close to my work, but just realized I can't buy it there since I live in TN. I have to do somemore calling lol. |

Don't buy into the nonsense about pistol grips, laser sights, tactical heat shields, etc. Get yourself a good, basic, wood-stocked pumpgun, then learn how to use it. Besides, what do you think the gummint would come for first, the wood-stocked shotgun for bunny hunting, or the nasty, evil synthetic-stocked gun with the pistol grip? Plus, once you buy the basic gun, if you decide you want to 'upgrade' later, you can find multiple sources of aftermarket parts. Last Edited by Lost Fisherman on 08/06/2009 06:01 PM "Uhhhhhh......" I already own a .20 ga Mossberg pump shotgun... :-) Granted there is less recoil then my husbands Remington .12 ga, but I still find it a bit unwieldy. In a HD situation, I could not see myself struggling to get this thing up to my shoulder so I could fire it. About "upgrading" though... that might be an option. ;-) I also have a .410 ga single shot bolt action shotgun, and I rather like the .410. Not much recoil. I like the idea of shooting from the hip, that would work well if your attacker is closing in on you. I'm much less likely to miss with a shotgun than with my .38. |

I personally have...er...ummm...I mean I would have a Mossberg 500 Cruiser, if I believed in guns. Quoting: HEADSHOT 735657Better Choice..... Otherwise: *Kid: Hah going to break in a steal some shit and scare the fuck outta the people inside for a rush. *You: O shit I hear something, lets get that .45 i just bought. *Wife hies while you leave your room, walk around the corner to encounter some punk bitch. *BOOM, HEADSHOT. Kid drops, minimal blood splatter, minimal damage to house and property. You need one shot, one kill without the mess. Do you even own a home? Probably not. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 723817 United States 08/06/2009 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Either one will do nicely. The Mossberg's safety is better located for lefties. Quoting: Evil TwinNot mine, its on the top by the grip, I can hit it with my thumb. I have a 500 persuader, 20 gauge. The lever is in a bad place, so I have to trip it, pull the trigger and then load so it stays up. Rack, safety and shoot. Otherwise, I like it. |

The 2009 model ccomes with a threaded barrel for changing chokes, but comes with a breaching choke. 2009 also comes with a new pump grip that is better and also came with ghost rails. Walmart didn't have what I was looking for. I'd link some good videos I found if I could ever get my home PC unbanned... |

I like the idea of shooting from the hip, that would work well if your attacker is closing in on you. I'm much less likely to miss with a shotgun than with my .38. If you find a Mossy 2o ga unwieldy, and you still want a 20 gauge. Then get yourself an H&R Topper or NEF Pardner. Try the youth model. These are very light guns that are easy to maneuver, accurate, and very reliable. The downside: They kick like a mule, and there are plenty of people that would say that a single shot is not good for HD (albeit better than nothing.) If home defense is truly the concern. Get a .38 revolver and practice using it. A revolver is quick and utterly reliable under stress (as long as you don't screw around with the trigger tension.) The only downside is less ammo than a semi-auto, and if it is taken from you, the bad guy will not be stumped on how to use it, and likely kill you with it. Best thing to do in an HD situation... get to a safe locked room with your loved ones and call 911. In the room, have a shotgun with you and a pistol, or two. If your loved ones also know how to shoot, even multiple intruders will not come through a barrage of pistol and shotgun fire!! |

Lost Fisherman User ID: 759210 United States 09/07/2009 10:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Cool - shotgun discusstion again! Just remember - simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. I like the 870 better, though there's nothing major wrong with the Mossberg. Minor complaints about the Mossberg are the plastic trigger guard and safety button. You don't need the laser, tac light, collapsible stock, or any other gingerbread. Stick with the regular blued metal and wood stock. Extended mag is nice though. For the defense side, get the 18-inch barrel, and make sure it is Remchoke equipped. With modified or improved cylinder choke it will do anything you need defensively, and much of what you need for hunting. Even slugs (old-fashioned Foster type, not the new fancy stuff) will be useful in it to 50 yards. If you need to go beyond 50, put a rifled choke tube in it, and you're good to 100 yards. With the $$$ you save by not buying gingerbread, get the rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount, and mount a Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 scope to it. Now you have a switch-barrel rig which will serve nicely in almost any situation you can imagine. "Uhhhhhh......" Barack Obama |
