Blue detour, Red detour? (in PA)
In Adams County, PA I have been seeing signs go up along US RT 15 saying "blue detour" or "red detour". What in the world are these supposed to be for? Anyone know?

get some pics of the signs and post them . If it is for furure military destinations /fema camps /death squads , it will be best to see what they look like.

Q. What are Red Detour, Black Detour, Green Detour and Blue Detour signs?
A. The color detours are predetermined detours to be used in case of an emergency (crash, weather, etc) that closes a section of the Interstate.!

Well thank you for googling that. However I am suspicious. I HOPE that is what they are for. Who knows, that is probably what the PA dept of transportation was told they were for. I just get a weird feeling everytime I use US 15 to go to Gettysburg and see those signs.

The colors of the signs have directional meaning, PennDot district traffic engineer Lou Belmonte said. Blue means north, red means south, green means east and orange means west. But in some areas alternate colors may be used, especially when detour routes overlap. "Nothing is etched in stone," Belmonte said.

BTW, that is a good idea as there have been quite a few incidents on US 15 in the past 2 years that required part of it to be closed. Again, it just makes me feel uneasy.

The program began in the spring of 2008. They are flip down signs that will be utilized in the case of an emergency. It was put in place because of a snow storm that stranded motorists on an interstate for many hours in 2006.

“Color” detour routes will be implemented for I-79, I-279, I-376, US 22/30, US 422, PA 28, and PA 60
If one of the below specified routes is closed in a particular direction, flip-down signs at the exit ramp instructing
motorists to follow a “color” detour will be flipped down by PENNDOT Maintenance crews advising motorists to follow
that colored sign detour. Once on the detour route, motorists are to follow supplemental trailblazing signage of that
color detour to return back to the roadway that they were on.

If what the Pa D of T says is true, why dos'nt the detours show up on maps, and all these detours are made public to the point that people know about them?
I don't beleave for a minute what I'v heard so far.
These signs are there with no explanation, how would anyone know what to do in an emergency?

"nothing is etched in stone" otherwise it's HORSESHIT. I just noticed these today along the entrance ramps of I-78 in eastern PA. If anyone takes any predetermined routes when PENNDOT can't even get their stories straight, they deserve whatever comes to them. Like sheeps to the slaughter......

These are simply detour signs for various shut downs. They have been up for years and used during emergency shutdowns from accidents as well as longer term shutdowns for the construction of bridges etc.
