This is a piece on the Lisbon Treaty as to Gerry Adams, and his thoughts on the Lisbon Treaty vote in the near future.

The reason I would put forward his thoughts in preference to other leaders is. Having done some searching of the main political parties, and their web sites. The first thing I noticed as to those sites. Sinn Fein would give access as to the accounts of their party. The reason this is of interest is. My local politician, which would live quite near me is said to have the highest spending of expenses in my constituency.

If he were a member of Sinn Fein I would have no problem as to the truth of spending of expenses. It would appear all of the parties I have tried to check as to spending, Sinn Fein is the only party which would offer me any access as to their accounts.

For far too long the main stream parties in Ireland have offered no accountability. For proof of this one only has to look up the corruption of the political elite and their Brown Envelope Tribunal thievery over the last ten years, and more.

Time for the people of Ireland to wake up. This your last chance, no more apathy, Vote No.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, Vice President Mary Lou McDonald and Dáil spokesperson on European Affairs Aengus Ó Snodaigh today launched the party’s Alternative Guide to the Lisbon Treaty.

Speaking at the launch Gerry Adams said:

“Last June the Irish people rejected the Lisbon Treaty and voted for a better deal for Ireland and the EU.

“Despite this, the government has failed to secure a single change to the text of the Lisbon Treaty. On October 2nd people are being asked to vote on exactly the same Treaty as they voted on last year with exactly the same implications for Ireland and the EU.

“Indeed the European Council in the conclusions to the June Summit made it very clear that the so called legally binding guarantees do 'not change either the content or the application of the Treaty of Lisbon.'

“Sinn Fein's Alternative Guide to Lisbon 2 outlines in detail the specific sections of the Lisbon Treaty which we believe will have a negative impact on issues such as Ireland’s influence in the EU; workers rights and public services; international trade and family farms; neutrality and EU militarisation.

“The debate over the coming 14 days must be about the Lisbon Treaty, its content and the implications of that content for the citizens of this member state and our EU neighbours.

“This is not about our membership of the EU. That is secure. It is about a better Ireland and a better Europe.”

Charlie McCreevy, Ireland’s European commissioner, who joked during last year’s Lisbon treaty referendum that he had not read the document and “no sane person would,” on Friday warned a second rejection by Ireland next month could turn a “very serious economic problem for Dublin into a full blown economic crisis”.

The European Commission has approved a grant of €14.8 million to help over 2,000 former Dell workers find work under new EU crisis measures.

President José Manuel Barroso, who is visiting Limerick today, announced that the European Commission has approved an application from Ireland for assistance from the European Globalisation adjustment Fund (EGF), a €500 million back-to-work scheme used to help retrain workers who lose their job due to the effects of globalisation.

Former minister Gisela Stuart says Lisbon Treaty would create 'democratic deficit'

Gisela Stuart, the Labour MP who helped draw up the controversial EU Lisbon Treaty has warned that it puts the nature of British democracy at stake.

The former health minister, said the treaty breached a fundamental principle that voters should be able to remove politicians who are in power.

Miss Stuart sat on the committee which devised the original EU constitution, and which later became the basis of the Lisbon Treaty.

Irish voters will go to the polls next month in a crucial referendum on the treaty, more than a year after they throwing the ratification process into disarray.

Miss Stuart said the treaty would create a "democratic deficit" if passed.

"The nature of democracy is really at stake," she said.

"My basic test of democracy is: can I get rid of them? By casting a vote, you can change the people who are in control of you."

The former law lecturer and MP for Birmingham Edgbaston added: "Lisbon does not give you, as a citizen, the means to control the executive or the politicians who decide on your behalf, and that's the hurdle it fails on."

The treaty contains a "ratchet clause" which means that national vetoes - such as that possessed by Britain - can be scrapped without the need for referendums or political summits.

Voters will also be unable to remove a powerful new EU president, who will be selected by EU leaders rather than by a poll of the electorates in member states.

Irish voters brought the Lisbon programme to an abrupt halt in June last year when they rejected it by 53.4 per cent to 46.6 per cent. The treaty must be ratified by all member states and the Irish government was unable to do so without a referendum.

The next Irish crunch vote takes place on October 2.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph in March, Miss Stuart said she had changed her mind about Europe and described the original EU constitution as a "botched compromise".

She added: "The EU cannot continue with its current structure."

PETITION OF THE CITIZENS OF EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES
AGAINST LISBON TREATY RATIFICATION

We, the citizens of the sovereign countries of the European Union, aware of our civil rights and in an effort to prevent steps leading to a bureaucratic lack of freedom across Europe, hereby express our disapproval of the Lisbon Treaty ratification.

The Lisbon Treaty is basically the European Constitution, which has already been rejected once. It gives the EU new powers to the detriment of the member countries (the right to veto measures is cancelled 68 times). It takes away our independent foreign, economic, social and energy policies and much more. Countries will lose control over indirect tax rates.

The Lisbon Treaty gives the EU the opportunity to acquire new powers and to cancel vetoes in other areas without any additional ratification. (Section 48, whose paragraph 7 enables the council to continue to increase the number of areas in which Brussels makes decisions and in which it makes decisions by qualified majority. In the future, such extension will not require the approval by the parliaments or citizens of the individual member countries, as was the case until now.)

The Lisbon Treaty increases the power of unelected bureaucrats: it extends the so-called “flexibility clause” under which only civil servants of the European Commission can issue binding decisions on trading standards, for example. Even now, there are ten times more such decisions than the number of directives discussed by the European Council and European Parliament.

In addition, the Lisbon Treaty reduces the weight of votes of smaller countries’ representatives in the Council of Ministers and increases the weight of large countries’ votes. Three of the four large countries (Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain) may at any time obstruct any of the European Commission’s plans. On the other hand, it is sufficient for them to get the support of eleven countries, no matter how small, to push through what they need – 55 per cent of the countries with 65 per cent of the population are sufficient, as compared with the current situation where each country has a veto. It destroys the sovereignty of the smaller countries in a number of important areas, making them dependent territories under the rule of a higher power. Member countries will no longer have a commissioner in each commission, thereby losing a large portion of their influence on the Union’s decision-making process.

On the basis of the above, we refuse ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and ask the governments of the various countries, in the interests of maintaining the liberty of the nations and their future generations, to initiate negotiations on a new direction for the European Union, to be built on equality and true liberty without bureaucratic regulations.

Czech Republic 'planning to delay signing Lisbon treaty'

EU leaders are said to be furious that the Czech Republic is planning to delay signing the Lisbon treaty for up to six months even if the Irish vote "yes" in their referendum next month.

The country might even try to delay it until after the British general election campaign when a Tory victory would see the question put to voters by David Cameron.

Nicolas Sarkozy, who helped to draw up the treaty after the French and Dutch voted against its predecessor, the EU Constitution, has warned Prague that it faces "consequences" if it does not swiftly follow an Irish "yes" with its own ratification.

The outburst followed a private warning from Jan Fischer, the Czech caretaker Prime Minister, to his EU counterparts over dinner at their summit in Brussels last Thursday, it has emerged.

Mr Fischer said that Václav Klaus, the country's unpredictable President, was planning to have a group of loyal senators in the Czech Upper House refer the treaty back to the country's constitutional court for a second time, which could delay ratification for between three and six months.

This would mean that the treaty could still be unratified going into the British general election campaign, expected next April or May. Mr Cameron has pledged that, if the document remained a live issue, even though Britain has completed its own ratification, he would call a referendum on it. This prospect horrifies most EU leaders, given the strong vein of euroscepticism in Britain.

Tensions are already running high among EU leaders over whether the Irish will vote in favour of the treaty on October 2 after a close-run referendum campaign. They are desperate that the momentum of a "yes" is not lost on the eurosceptic Czech and Polish presidents, the final two signatures required for EU ratification.

The treaty further erodes national powers to veto EU decisions, and a Tory government would campaign against it. President Klaus is understood to have told allies that he wants to wait if possible to see if Mr Cameron wins the next election.

Speaking after last Thursday's dinner, Mr Sarkozy said: "I stated clearly that if the Irish say 'yes', there is no question that we will accept to stay in a no-man’s land with a Europe that does not have the institutions to cope with the crisis,” he said.

Asked about what could be done to persuade President Klaus to sign, he added: "It will be necessary to draw the consequences — but those will be the subject of another meeting."

Mr Fischer is acting as caretaker Prime Minister after the Government of Mirek Topolánek fell in the summer and while fresh elections are organised. He has warned privately that he has little control over the country's headstrong President. Speaking to Czech journalists after last week's summit, he admitted: "It is certainly a fact that several government leaders perceive the ratification process in the Czech Republic with a degree of nervousness."
