BOEHNER: “AMERICANS DON’T WANT A BETTER SALES PITCH; THEY WANT A BETTER PLAN TO LOWER COSTS AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF CARE”

August 13, 2009 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

New polling today shows a continued erosion of support for the government takeover of health care proposed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her congressional allies. Here’s the latest:

* A new Rasmussen poll today reports: “For the first time in over two years of polling, voters trust Republicans slightly more than Democrats on the handling of the issue of health care. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that voters favor the GOP on the issue 44% to 41%.”

* A USA Today/Gallup poll shows that independents, by a 2-to-1 margin, are siding with the town hall protesters in the health care debate. Specifically, the poll says: “In a survey of 1,000 adults ... 34% say the sometimes heated protests at sessions held by members of Congress have made them more sympathetic to the protesters' views; 21% say they are less sympathetic. Independents by 2-1, 35%-16%, say they are more sympathetic to the protesters now.”

* A Gallup poll shows that more Americans disapprove (49 percent) of Obama on health care than approve (43 percent), despite a month-long “offensive” of speeches, interviews, town halls and a national primetime press conference by the President.

The more the American people learn about the Democrats’ costly government takeover of health care that will increase costs, destroy jobs, and put bureaucrats in charge of medical decisions instead of patients and doctors, the more they oppose it. In an op-ed in the USA Today this morning, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) addressed the White House “offensive” over the last month, saying Americans “don’t want a better sales pitch, they want a better plan”:

“The White House has mounted yet another new ‘offensive’ this week to make its case. But Americans don’t want a better sales pitch; they want a better plan to lower costs and improve the quality of health care.”

“Americans are frustrated and angry, and they don’t believe Washington gets it. It’s not just about health care, it’s also about out-of-control government spending that’s piling debt on our kids and grandkids. It’s also about jobs. Families and small businesses are struggling, and they’re rightly asking, ‘Where are the jobs?’ The last thing Americans want is more double-talk.”

“Republicans are offering better solutions that would make quality health care more affordable and accessible for every American. It’s time for President Obama to call on Speaker Pelosi to scrap this costly plan, start over and work with Republicans on reforms that reflect the priorities of the American people.”

The American people support real health care reform – a plan that reduces costs and expands access to quality care. The Democrats’ proposal does neither, and that’s why they are seeing the mounting opposition firsthand back in their congressional districts. House Republicans have offered a better solution that addresses Americans’ concerns about out-of-control health care costs.

The House GOP plan would make quality health care coverage more affordable and accessible for every American, regardless of pre-existing health conditions. Isn’t it time for Democrats to scrap their costly plan and work with Republicans on a proposal that will make health care more affordable and accessible for the American people?
