SHITLOADS OF MILITARY CARGO PLANE TRAFFIC TODAY NE OHIO
It isn't unusual for us to see the military cargo planes flying over maybe once a day - or once every couple days. They usually fly 2 at a time. One flies over with another just shortly behind it. I think these are manuevers.

Well, today we have seen then go over at least a dozen times - we have lived here for several years and never seen this before.

Is anyone else noticing increased military air traffic in their area? Even now, these planes are flying over. Another odd thing about today is the formation. Usually it is always 2 planes traveling together. Most of the time today it has been just one at a time - and not using the same exact course. We are seeing them fly southwest to northeast and then back northeast to southwest.

We live just south of Alliance Ohio - assuming they are traveling to Youngstown...but not sure.

I am surprised that no one is responding. This is very concerning to us that there is this much air traffic over us with these cargo planes. These planes have been flying low too....you can see the rivets they are so low.

In in the Cleveland area and there was talk on the radio this afternoon by the local DJ witnessing outside his studio military aircraft, criss crossing, leaving chem ? trails. Others called in and witnessed it too.

I didn't know about it until after the fact though so I didn't see it.

Glad someone brought it up. The DJ said on the air that he distinctly saw a white box underneath a plane where the smoke was coming out. fwiw.

Wish I heard the broadcast! My mom called to tell me about it afterwards.

Forgot to mention, the planes were seen in the Independence, Ohio area going out to Sandusky. It was also mentioned that at one point no airplanes had been flying out of our international airport for 22 minutes during this event.

I actually saw one today (Central NJ coast) .. It had a loud engine .. and was all (matte) grey with a red emblem. It seemed like a cargo plane .. not sure .. just looked military. There is a Natl Guard training center nearby but it wasn't flying in that direction .. who knows.

What military bases are in the area. Could just be something having to do with the deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The wife and kids and I over-nighted in Sandusky several years ago, enroute via car to Minneapolis MN. Pretty place. We stopped and went thru the carousel museum there. Nice time.

Actually there is an Air National Guard base at Youngstown. And then, of course, there is the mysterious Ravenna Arsenal - a huge fenced-in complex owned by the federal government that they keep operating. What they are still doing there (if anything at all) is a big mystery. Most of the manufacturing facilities at the arsenal are underground. A few years back they moved an Army reserve unit from Ravenna out to a new facility built on arsenal property. Over the years is has been quite common to see 2, 3, or 4 C-130's making low pass runs over the arsenal. Practice runs? Cargo drops? Don't know.

I know the exact location. I have seen the planes fly over very low exactly as you describe them. I have never seen them fly over more than once, and like you said, always in 2s. I would find it curious if there were an increase in air traffic in that area. I am not there right now so can only comment on what I have witnessed in the past.

I have seen helicopters coming and going from what i believe is mansfield lahm airport. The copters I've seen were not familiar to me. One had propellers at each end, and the other was waspish. Both were black as pitch.

I know Lahm is where the national gaurd deploy from, from the surrounding counties here in north central ohio. I've heard stories about Lahm having under ground facilities but have never been able to confirm.

I have noticed a lot of air traffic this last week or so.

Definitely an increase in NW Ohio. Don't have a clue what kind they are, but they're military. Can't mistake the sound, and they fly low and fast.

Ok - so it could be the same one - or the same set of 2 - but they are flying over a whole hell of a lot today. Started this morning and didn't stop until shortly after I posted this thread. Well over a dozen times today. Highly unusual. Extremely unusual. They are low and they are loud. We are approx. 6 miles south of Alliance Ohio - just off SR 183 - about a stones throw from the Columbiana County line.

Ravenna sounds plausible - though I didn't know they had an arsenal there. Just always assumed Youngstown or Warren.

Wright-Patterson AFB is Dayton - wrong direction from here. That would be extreme southwest Ohio.

Ohio Air National Guard C-130 Hercules Demonstration

The Ohio Air National Guard C-130 is hard to miss: stretching more than 130 feet across the runway and 100-plus feet long, its strength is found in its versatile operations and impressive cargo space. The C-130 can transport everything from utility helicopters to six-wheel armored vehicles, as well as standard pallet cargo and military personnel.

[link to www.clevelandairshow.com]

I see the point about the airshow....they do mention the C-130 Hercules being a part of it. But why would they fly clear down here for practce? They fly through here multiple times a week. I always wondered where they are coming from - perhaps Wright-Patterson AFB to Ravenna or Youngstown. And they aren't shitting when they say those planes are hard to miss.....I can hear them coming a couple minutes before I can see them when they are really low.

Avid GLP viewing + Living in C-130 flight pattern = a touch of paranoia I suppose.....
