Re: NATURAL FORESTS TO BE TURNED INTO GMO FORESTS!!!
Prof. Joe Cummins gives us timely warnings of mad scientists developing GM trees that send mercury vapor into the air and questions the benefits of GM trees with reduced lignin content.
GM Trees that Emit Mercury Vapors
Soil mercury pollution can be a major chronic hazard. Most polluted sites are historical industrial sites. Gold mining, in particular, may still use primitive "quicksilver" gold extraction that pollutes soil and waterways. In many areas, soil pollution may be of geological origin rather than a result of human activity. Currently, atmospheric deposition of mercury is a leading pollution problem in the cities and wild lakes of northern countries. Most of the problem is associated with fossil fuels and medical waste incineration.
Plots of land that are polluted with high levels of mercury are planned to be ‘phytoremediated’ using trees genetically modified to take up ionic mercury or organic mercury, convert it to less toxic elemental mercury, which is then expelled into the atmosphere where it will be ‘safely diluted’.
The proponents of transgenic phytoremediation argued that mercury emissions from the treated sites would be below the current emission levels for elemental mercury. They say elemental mercury is retained in the atmosphere for up to two years during which time it is diluted to "non toxic" levels before precipitation. The proponents also argued that the pollution would be negligible in comparison to fossil fuel burning and hospital waste incineration. They claimed that animals fed on the GM plants would be exposed to less mercury than from conventional plants because elemental mercury was so rapidly released from the plant tissue. They also believed that the genes from mercury emission would not be transferred to non-transgenic plants.
Unfortunately, although elemental mercury does remain in the atmosphere for up to two years, it always precipitates with rain and snow. The arctic acts as a trap to condense the fallen mercury, but all of the northern communities including large North America cities on the east suffer from increasing mercury accumulation brought down with precipitation. The precipitated elemental mercury is rapidly converted to ionic and organic mercury once it is deposited.
What phytoremediation will do is to relocate soil mercury from contaminated soil sites in southern communities and disperse and redistribute the mercury to the northern communities. There are a large number of sites with mercury contaminated soil and sediment along with the geological areas of high mercury content. For example, the crude gold mining techniques used along the Amazon left high soil mercury levels. If that area were to be phytoremediated, the mercury released to the atmosphere is likely to precipitate in the cities on northern United States and Canada and impact heavily on the Arctic. Emitted mercury, condensed in the ocean, will reappear on the dinner tables of the world from bioaccumulation through the food chain.
Based on the current experience with transgenic crops, it is certain that some transgenic pollen and seed will escape. Populating expansive areas of geological mercury pollution with mercury transgenic trees could lead to a global catastrophe.
The US EPA seems rather schizophrenic in supporting the research on mercury phytoremediation by air emission on the one hand while also supporting major projects in reducing atmospheric mercury deposition. The United Nations should play a major role in regulating the global atmospheric deposition of mercury and other volatile pollutants.

* Vilsack was the origin of the seed pre-emption bill in 2005, which many people here in Iowa fought because it took away local government's possibility of ever having a regulation on seeds- where GE would be grown, having GE-free buffers, banning pharma corn locally, etc. Representative Sandy Greiner, the Republican sponsor of the bill, bragged on the House Floor that Vilsack put her up to it right after his state of the state address.
*Vilsack is an ardent support of corn and soy based biofuels, which use as much or more fossil energy to produce them as they generate, while driving up world food prices and literally starving the poor. Words are just estimations of meaning.

Belgium: Field trials planned of GM poplar trees for ethanol
Posted on 29 February 2008 by Chris Lang
Why are scientists researching this dangerous, untested false solution to climate change, when other real solutions already exist?
By Chris Lang. Published in WRM Bulletin 127, February 2008.
Late last year, the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), a life sciences research institution applied for permission to establish a field trial of genetically modified poplar trees in Belgium. The GM trees would have modified lignin content, aimed at making production of ethanol easier.[1]
VIB was established in 1996. Funded largely by the Flemish government, it employs more than one thousand scientists. VIB aims to produce scientific discoveries with “industrial application potential”, which it patents and either signs agreements with existing companies or establishes start-up companies to develop the discoveries into “market-ready products”. By 2006, VIB had patents on 100 of its discoveries.[2]
VIB has a communications team responsible for producing information targeted at educators, journalists and politicians. It sets up competitions for schools, provides teaching materials, books, presentations and exhibitions. Materials include titles like “What is bioengineering?”, “The Safety of Genetically Engineered Crops”, and “Xenotransplantation: the animal in the man…”.[3] In these glossy brochures VIB promotes biotechnology, plays down the risks and portrays scientists as neutral experts interested only in the good of society. Meanwhile, VIB lobbies politicians to relax regulations covering the use of human cells and GM crops.
According to the application submitted to the Belgian authorities, VIB plans to plant GM trees on a 0.24 hectare experimental plot in University of Ghent Science and Industry park in Zwijnaarde. The trees are planned to be planted in May 2008 and the experiment is to last until the end of 2014.[4]
The genus Populus includes about 30 species of trees, which are native to most of the Northern Hemisphere, with common names including poplar, aspen and cottonwood. It is the scientists’ favourite tree for genetic experimentation. The world’s first release of genetically modified trees was a field trial of herbicide resistant GM poplars in 1988 in Belgium.[5] Since then, well over half of the 200-plus GM tree trials worldwide involved poplar trees.[6] In 2006, Populus trichocarpa became the first tree to have its full DNA code sequenced.[7]
The only GM trees to be commercially released are poplars – GM poplars have been planted in China since 2002. No records are kept of where the trees are planted or how many have been planted.[8] In 2004, Xue Dayuan of the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Science told the China Daily that genes from the GM poplars had already appeared in natural varieties growing nearby.[9]
The risks of genetic contamination are huge, given the large and widespread population of wild relatives. Poplar trees can spread through suckers growing from roots. Pollen and seed are spread on the wind “possibly on rather long distance”, notes VIB. However, VIB states that, “seed regeneration is not often observed as ecological conditions necessary to seed germination and plantlet development are seldom met.”[10] The words “not often” and “seldom” are hardly reassuring, given that the impact of genetic contamination in non-GM poplar trees is unknown, but potentially devastating.
Yet VIB states that “The environmental impact from the release is expected to be zero, since the GM poplars are not going to flower and any suckers from superficial roots will be destroyed.”[11] True, the trees to be planted will be female clones and will produce no pollen. It is probably also true that if the trees flower, VIB’s researchers will remove the flowers. But the environmental impact of this trial will not be zero.
VIB ignores the fact that the purpose of the trial plantation is to develop GM trees to produce ethanol. To be commercially viable, plantations of GM poplars would need to cover vast areas of land. If large scale GM tree plantations were to be established, genetic contamination of natural varieties of poplars, aspen and cottonwoods would be inevitable.[12]
VIB makes no mention of the impacts that industrial tree plantations have on local communities and their environments. Nor does VIB consider the fact that growing trees (or any other type of agrofuel crop) to produce ethanol on an industrial scale will increase conflicts over land. If forests and grasslands are not to be destroyed (which would release huge amounts of carbon) the tree plantations will have to be planted on agricultural land. This will increase the price of food encouraging corporations and farmers to clear land elsewhere (including forests and grasslands).[13] Two recent papers in Science magazine demonstrate that all the major agrofuels cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels, once the emissions caused by land clearance and producing the fuels are taken into account.[14]
The people promoting agrofuels and GM trees as a solution to climate change tend to be scientists whose research benefits from promoting agrofuels or GM trees. “Biomass represents an abundant carbon-neutral renewable resource for the production of bioenergy and biomaterials, and its enhanced use would address several societal needs,” claims an article published in Science magazine in January 2006.[15] What’s missing from such statements is a comparison of agrofuels with, say, large scale solar and wind power combined with high voltage direct current cables and hydrogen fuel cells.[16] These technologies can be used immediately and would massively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike GM trees.

A friend of mine who cuts wood in and for the winter months, showed me a permit he had gotten allowing him to cut 12 (or 20, I can't remember) pickup truck loads of wood from and in anywhere in the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson National Forests for paying $25.
This just struck me as very odd because I didn't know this was possible. He told me his grandfather showed him how to do it, and it must have been some time ago because his GF is now legally mentally incompetent.

Frightening stuff. I much bigger deal than global warming and yet not a word is mentioned on the national news. I wonder how insects will react to these genetically modified trees. Doesn't it say somewhere in bible prophecy that an insect will kill one third of the world's population. The insect will be something new. The bible describes it but I can't remember the description.

Re: NATURAL FORESTS TO BE TURNED INTO GMO FORESTS!!!
The problem is GMO plants do not reproduce - I.E. their seeds are sterile, so once the plant dies it is gone and no offspring are reproduced. The only way a new tree can grow if one dies (or is harvested) is if it is replanted.
Consider this scenario:
Monsanto (and International Paper) get the rights to old growth forest's and the right to harvest same with the condition that "replanting" is done. They use GM tree's.
BUT Monsanto and International Paper go bankrupt and the land go to a third party (a bank) that gives a rats ass about trees.
So now you have massive swaths that used to be healthy old growth forest of not being "replanted" that are prone to flood, mudslides ect...
All in the name of profit !
Pull a paper bill (US) out of your wallet, look at the top at what it say's -"FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE".
Think about that for a little while ! "God sent me to piss the world off"

I’ll Give Up My Chicken When They Pry It From My Cold Dead Hands
8/26/2009
by John Rubino
Last week I had dinner with two friends, one of whom is what the mainstream would call a conspiracy nut. Over the course of a couple of hours and a bunch of margaritas he walked us through everything from the government’s role in 9/11 to the FEMA internment camps to the surge in gun regulations, all of which are scary, but also mostly beyond my experience. I’m a finance guy who gets the monetary side of what’s coming, but I don’t own guns (yet) and have no first-hand knowledge of 9/11 or FEMA camps. So -- while some or all of these things might be true -- it was still a bit academic.
Then we got to something I could relate to: Apparently the U.S. is getting ready to require every citizen who owns even a single backyard chicken to register their livestock and implant them with a microchip that will allow both identification and tracking. The chicken (or goat or pig) owner will be required to notify the government when the animal is moved, say to the county fair 4-H barn. And when the animal dies the owner will have to fill out a form and submit it to the authorities within 24 hours. AND the owner will be required to register visitors to their property, whether they come into contact with the livestock or not.
This sounded too ridiculous to be real. The other conspiracies at least have plausible, if dark, rationales, like setting us up for a war, containing troublesome mobs of unemployed private sector workers, or putting gun owners under the thumb of the ATF. But why would a would-be dictator care about the neighbor’s chickens?
So I googled NAIS, for National Animal Identification System, and discovered that it is indeed real, has been around for a while, and calls for pretty much everything mentioned above, though initially on a voluntary basis. See this 2005 article by Justin & Franklin Sanders of the The Money Changer newsletter. And watch these videos:
NAIS’ stated purpose -- to be able to track animals back to their source in case of a disease outbreak -- is something the USDA would obviously like to have, in the same way that the FBI would love to be able to monitor all telephone calls and emails without a warrant. But the downside of handing this kind of power to the government is so huge and so obvious that anybody with a sense of history has to suspect that the public rationale for NAIS is a smokescreen for some darker motive, of which several possibilities come to mind.
First, the per-animal cost of the chips and the paperwork (not to mention the loss of privacy) goes up exponentially as the number of animals per square meter goes down. So motive number one is clearly to enable big factory farmers and chip makers to squeeze fast-growing local farmers by raising their costs. NAIS will also make it harder for individuals to raise chickens for eggs or cows for milk, making consumers more reliant on the ag/industrial complex.
Meanwhile, people who keep animals and buy local produce also frequently own guns, and by and large would like to be left alone to pursue their own interests. Many of them own gold because they don’t trust the government to protect their dollar savings. This is clearly a dangerously subversive subculture, and knowing where they are would be very helpful in case of a, ahem, public health crisis.
There’s also the monetary angle. As Catherine Austin Fitts, whose Solari Network is doing great work in fields like financial freedom and sustainable communities, puts it:
“Oil is not sufficient to provide the backing for a global virtual currency. For that you need to control food; which means corporate ownership and control of seed and food production and distribution. NAIS is designed to help facilitate the roll up of control in the United States in the most economic manner.”
A Step Back
This month, after apparently getting an earful from local farmers, Congress voted to scale back funding for NAIS. They didn’t kill it, which means agribusiness (and Homeland Security?) will now start lobbying to get funding restored. But this at least gives more people a chance to start paying attention. According to Catherine Austin Fitts, the best source for keeping up with NAIS is the Weston A. Price Foundation.
If I was not a Christian I would be really upset about all this. But I am, so I ain't. It will not stand. The Only Hope...

made a fake corporation to hide behind, they didn't want to clean up their mess. Someone knew about the name change, and that Monsanto was the parent company, so they got them on that.
They caused the land in parts to be polluted and farmers couldn't sale their produce, it also caused illness in people too. Monsanto is a very bad corporation, period.

We need wood - we use tons of wood, we also need fast growing forests of semi-hard woods. Eucalyptus is a fast growing semi-hard species that makes Douglas fir look like crap. As lumber it is a stronger, longer lasting wood. Drop a limb of a Eucalyptus on the ground next to a similar sized Douglas Fir. Return in five years and the Fir is nearly gone, the Eucalyptus will still be structurally sound, albeit rotted on the outside, the inside will be remarkably stable.
As structural Lumber, the taller species of Eucalyptus have thicker trunks that are thicker wider up - for the same amount of ground area one gets nearly double the amount of tree compared to other species of soft wood we grow.
Like it or not your generation will live to see many genetically modified things - plants, trees, animals... people.
Much like my generation lived to see jet aircraft, computers, the internet yours lives on the cusp of genetic revolution.
Back in the day when I was a kid people bemoaned the computer, swearing up and down that humanity would meet with a sudden final end. Yet here we are, a computer in nearly every home in the industrialized nations, folk carrying working computers (called cell phones), and nearly all will tell you that that technology has made life far, far easier and much better in ways that my generation could not have dreamed.
I assure you of a few things:
1. Your children will grow up in the world of Genetically modified Species and will see these as 'blessings'.
2. There will be monsters, failures, mistakes - there were with computers and all of the technologies we use today, thus it is only logical to assume that this will happen again.
3. When your kids are your age, something "new" will come along and they too will be as unhappy about that as you are about this and as my generation was all upset over computers.
4. Yes most likely every technology ever made will be used against us in time. Nothing that man has invented hasn't been used or abused to cause harm.
They try to keep Eden (Earth) from rising back to her original splendor by raping her body (land), poisoning her blood (water) and polluting her spirit (air)...they know when this blue planet and humanity ascend they have to start their evolution all over again because they went against the universal order.
