Detention Center going up in West Virginia
A recent proposal to build a detention center for nonviolent, undocumented immigrants in the area has many people concerned about safety.

A public hearing was scheduled for Thursday night about the facility in Pendleton County. The proposed detention center would temporarily house up to 1,000 immigrants.

Tonia Hedrick opposes the plan, citing safety concerns.

"I'm not one of those, 'Oh, they just don't want change here in this county.' No, I want progressive, positive change. I want to see high-tech jobs possibly. This doesn't go along with what we've been trying to do," says Hedrick.

The company GSI Professional Corrections would build and run the facility.

"This is not a done deal," says County Commission President Judy Hott.

She hasn't taken a position on the detention center, but she points out a possible benefit.

"Right now in Pendleton County, jobs are desperately needed," says Hott.

County leaders say the project could bring more than 200 jobs to the county.

"Anything that we can do to keep our people and our young people here in the county, that they don't have to travel for work, we will definitely look into," says Hott.

People often have to travel out of the county for work. Hedrick did it for a while.

"We're losing people everyday who have to leave the area to find jobs. I just can't believe people would leave our area because they didn't like an employer," says Hott.

However, that's exactly what Hedrick says she'll do if the detention center is approved.

"I, for one, would not feel comfortable raising my family near such a facility," comments Hedrick.

The Pendleton County Commission is not expected to take a vote on the detention center Thursday. Instead, any formal decision would come at a regular county commission meeting.

Aides for Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R) say she hasn't taken a position on the proposed detention center. She's forwarded Hedrick's concerns to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

What a joke when do they ever arrest more than a handful of illegals at a time?

They've built two small homeland security offices in my town.

We have no need of homeland security here at all.

One day I think they'll find other uses for all these prisons.

Of course prisons are big business in America now.

After all the US does have more people in prison than any other country in the world.
