I don't know how true it is but I was told that extension cords use more electricity because it has to travel further. (or something like that)

I have one of the older meters, and am thinking seriously of cranking the screws in a bit to slow it down. Just gotta figure out how to do it without tipping off the meter reader. I am not going to be put into the position of having to choose between power and food.

Man! It's hot!

I'm getting ready to go to bed but I went out to check my meter so I can start logging it and would you believe that it actually has a small print in one corner that says "F" on one side and "S" about 1/2 inch lower. There is a plain screw that has adjusted the mark to read just a little under the halfway mark.

Could this possibly stand for Faster or slower? I won't mention further about this but I thought it was odd.

I feel certain it's an original (1949). IT's got a glass bowl around it and the metal shield that's supposed to hold it in place (kind of like a porch light) is so lose it can spin the entire way around. But there's some cylinder knob with a hole in the middle of it keeping it on.

Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything. The way my luck is running I'd be electrocuted just trying to figure the instrument out- whether I had good or bad intentions.

I just find devices like this interesting. I should have been a car mechanic.

Besides- now that I have everything unhooked from the wall- just like this whole computer thing will be in a few minutes my bill should run much cheaper next month.

If I plan to sleep 8 hours should I go ahead and flip the electric panel to the hot water on now or can I wait? The fuse has been shut off all night. I never DID find an outlet it was plugged into.

Later gators.

kick the main off..if the meter spins you are hacked..trust me..i did this and my meter still turned...wtf? dug up 3 wires from under the house that were wired into the panel...the house 3 doors down had no lights that night..if every bracker in the pannel is off and no spin..map every braker were it goes..trace everything...then get quotes on solor lease or owner install and so forth.

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
I fully expect every derogatory comment anyone wants to shoot off at me....

But in one year our power company has had 4 rate hikes. The one last month was 13%. The others were 11%, 8% and 10%.

I just got my electric bill and you know how it shows the bars related to the previous year?

I used almost 1/4 LESS electricity this past month and my bill is over $100 more.

These are the facts:

1. I am single. I keep my therm at 83 when I'm not here and 78 when I am (not exactly comfortable).

2. I keep all computers, printers, tv's, etc. turned OFF when I'm not using them. Someone recently suggested that's not good enough: You need to actually unplug everything when you're not using them (lamps which aren't turned on, etc) in order to make a significance.

3. I wash two loads of clothes a week (at most) and installed a cute little 1950 clothes pole in my backyard to dry them with clothes-pins.

4. Since I live by myself I don't cook except for maybe twice a month. The rest of the time I eat sandwiches and fruit.

5. In each of my overhead lights I have 2 bulbs instead of the 3 allotted. And they're 60 watt instead of 100.

6. I run the dishwasher (mainly glassware) once every two weeks.

I'm sure there are other things (keeping drapes shut, water heater temp-, fridge temp, etc) that I'm forgetting to tell you but you get the point.

This bill was $383 for a 1500 sq ft house. When Cap and trade kicks in I have no idea what I'll do.

Until now I have lived a very honest life but I'm SICK of this shit!

I went to a swap meet over the weekend and they had this thing you could buy that would reduce your energy bill by 25%-40%. It's called plug and save.

Then I started googling about how years ago people used to put sand bags on their meter to slow the rotation..

Then something about magnets.

I do NOT want to do this but I am paying 50% of my take home to the electric company and it keeps getting worse every 3 months when they have another rate hike.

Does ANYONE know what I can do to reduce my electric meter?

They are RAPING us and there's nothing that appears that we can do anything about it.

I m a VERY frugal person. I don't even have cable TV or a cell phone. But by the time I pay the water, electricity, phone and trash pick up each month I seriously have very little to even buy food and gasoline with. I haven't bought a new piece of clothing or "luxury" item for over 3 years.

This just isn't right.

If anyone could suggest some things I would be truly grateful.

Miggy
(PS I can't keep the windows open at night because someone would break in- not that it matters- it's still 140 degrees here at night anyway)

Reach out to everyone in your community
Have a town hall meeting
Invite mayor and sheriff (NO REPRESENTATIVES)
Everyone sign a petition to force representative out of office until further notice.
Head to his office and take their PCs. Lock the doors with new locks.

I can't believe how stupid, and sheep-like some people really are. I wonder how cowards like those in the white house find courage to carry on. I know its mostly because they work in numbers (united), but the sheep mentality is amazing and I know they sit back and laugh themselves.

No representatives no problems. Every district has a representative. Form a group of people in your community and LOCK OUT THE REPRESENTATIVES.

Some districts will be more difficult than others because even some mayors and Sheriffs are corrupt, but even the most corrupt person fears NUMBERS.

Once the small cities remove them, it will be much easier for the larger and corrupt cities to do so.

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
We're in Scottsdale AZ. In the desert. My house is set at 84 degrees most of the day and we drop it to 78 at night. That's as high as we can take it. Our last month electric bill was 585. We're going to see 650 this next month and probably for the first part of September, too.

Our utility rates go UP IN THE SUMMER because the AC demand goes up so much. Our utility company here is BRUTAL. The SALT RIVER PROJECT is a non-profit answerable only to themselves and they are bastards! I hate them with a passion!

BTW: we have a Summer Rate that has three components. May we switch onto summer rates but it's higher but not as high as it gets in July and August (our hot months) and then the rates go up again for July and August to almost 19.5c per KW/H. When you're running two (a four and a five ton) AC units that 20cents per Kw/h adds up fast. That means that my big AC unit is costing about $1.40 per hour to run. The smaller unit is costing me a little less (about $1.10 per hour. They both run more than 1/2 the day and a good portion of the evening, too. There is NOTHING we can do to lower it. If the power goes out here people can literally die - and our power company will cut it off without giving a shit if the bill is not paid! Bastards in a big way.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 642285

I hear ya....SRP is terrible. I had AC problems last summer..my bills were in the $400s for a house that is 1200SF or less...something was wrong with the AC.

Anyway I called them and told them my problem, they said I could get my bill averaged over the year but I had to be there for one year to get that. Sooooo...the next summer I tried again...they said "You have been late on your payments twice, so we can't do that for you."

WTF?!

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
Someone I know years ago used to turn their meter upside down to have it run backwards. Crazy I know but utilities ran $30 dollars a month in the winter for them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 760978

yes back in the late 70s we did

only one or two weeks and put it back DAYS before the reader was due
always waited a few days after the reading just in case he came back for another reading
kept reading every couple of days to get it down but not so much as to cause inspection

just pulled the meter out turned it upside down so it ran BACKWARD for days at a time
then turned it right up and pushed it back in

tallied the bill and reduced bit by bit till affordable

and kept it close to that not to rouse suspicions

but the electric company found out and now all meters
have locks with seals and if one is broken its big trouble BIG

I am not a techie but found this in a search
its way out of my budget and it doesnt say HOW it works

[link to www.saferwholesale.com]

bet a kid with a puter can reverse some of the money wind on any meter !

anyone have a tech genious kid to rent out?

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
OP you probably have a faulty meter or it's not getting read right (estimates instead of actually reading the meter). Call the electric company and tell them you want a new meter. Read the meter yourself on a monthly basis and compare it to the readings on the bill. Tell them you are going to check it and they will start actually reading the meter if they have just been estimating the usage.

IF yours is NOT sealed you can get in there and place a STRONG paperclip on the wheel next to the point where it passes toward the rear turn

stop it there

pull it out before dawn so you are not seen

watch to be sure the wheel doesnt just turn slowly
with the clip attached as THAT will leave easy to spot marks on the wheel

labor intense method but I WISH I could open the globe on this one!

betcha I would be out there twice a night stopping that meter for most of the night

only launder twice a mo
have loads of socks and underwear, shorts and jeans
so no worry for clean stuff and if powr goes down

only use dishwasher if there have been guests which ir becoming RARE
and now use plastic plates, rinse in used laundry water
then clear water and reuse

people will come up with ways

hope they post here....

I'm in Maricopa. Our rates are 30% higher than SRP / APS. Last bill was $457 -- a new record.

I have upped the temp to 82, put film on the windows, and installed a power-save device on the main. None of this maters because the freaking rates keep going up!

Cap and trade would financially ruin us.

Where do you live?

My electric bill is 120 a month and i have 3 people at home all day that dont leave for work. The Washing machine and dryer are running almost constantly. We cook alot of our food in a 1100 watt microwave and on an electric stove. We hardly ever go out to eat. It is also a 1500 sq ft house. Maybe you should go back to trinity thread and read up on how to test your meter to see if you are being cheated.
