Anonymous Coward User ID: 1043664 United States 07/22/2010 07:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Use jumper wires to bypass the meter. There is a meter read date so you know when to remove them before the evil utility co. arrive and catch you. Bypass the meter for 5-7 days the first billing cycle, then 7-10 days the next two cycles. After that only bypass for a max of 14 days in a billling period. Do this so you do not draw attention to the dramatic reduction in your electric bill. Suspicious utility company will come unscheduled. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 748689I feel bad that I even addressed this but I've lived here (Vegas) 7 years and I don't see it EVER changing.... Every 3 months they go before the commission and are approved another rate hike between the 8-13% range. That's quite a bit for a year. But the water Authority is just as bad. Though I have green grass year round, after living here about 2 years I went out there and asked why the hell my bills were $100 a month. Now keep in mind: By working in a casino, I ate one very filling meal at work each evening so I didn't have to cook. I was issued three dry-cleaned uniforms so I only had to wash a load of clothes a week (towels, sheets, etc.)> Basically I showered and brushed my teeth each day. They were quick to tell me (I live in the historic district) that I must have some kind of leaking going on under my house, in the sprinkler system, etc. So a neighbor recommended an honest plumber. He took his equipment all over the premises and came back, swearing to me that there were no leaks. OK. That costs $100. Then another neighbor recommended his sprinkler guy and the guy came over, went all OVER the place and said, "Lady, you DON'T have any leaks!" Another $100. A few days later I decided to slip into a neighborhood bar and have a glass of wine before going home to deal with this house that I KNOW is going to kill me. I started conversing with a 60-70 year old man and found out he'd been a plumber his whole life in Vegas. We talked about my problem and since he lived nearby he told me he'd stop by in the morning. He looked around my 1949 house and said: This is what I want you to do. After you shower and leave for work tonight, turn this outside valve off (on the front of the house). When you wake up in the morning look around the neighborhood and see if there are any "plumbing" trucks around. He said that back in that time of construction it was common for two or three houses to be hooked up to ONE water line (Mom, Dad, kids in one house- Grandparents in another- and maybe an Aunt and Uncle in the other.) He said if I didn't see anything to call the water Dept and DEMAND a new meter because he said he could tell the one I had was from 1949. After not seeing any plumbing trucks I went to the water dept and it was like pulling TEETH to get a new meter. I bet I talked to a dozen people, each saying, "Oh, No!!!!! You've got the best quality out there. I wish I had one of those at MY house!" I wouldn't budge. The next day they came back and do you know for the past 6 years years my water bill has NEVER been over $50 like the first 24 months I lived here when they were $100? I knew they'd never credit my account but I wanted them to know that I KNEW what was what! Now, for all I know the electric meter is the same. I just went and stuck out two magnets to the outside of the glass but I've got a feeling I'm not putting them in the right spot. Yes, I know it's illegal. Send Obama the bill. Or take my $1200 credit back from the Water Authority that I'LL NEVER SEE AGAIN. My thermostat has been set to 82 here all day and it only kicked on for about 15 minute4s this afternoon. I've only had this laptop and my office light on. Maybe I should start taking daily meter readings. Would THAT help????? BTW, because Vegas has these 6-7 foot sound walls around each of our homes the readers simply have to click over the fence. In my case, my meter is located on the other side of two buildings. Also, I have a street lamp sitting on my property. Do you think I have to pay for that for the whole neighborhood? Thanks again for all of your kinds advice. Miggy I know what you mean, we left Vegas in May and live in the Texas panhandle, much better, our last bill was $47. That is with an elect range, 1100 watt microwave, two laptops (we do turn them off at night) clock radios, 2 tv's, etc. We have been so happy. Also, we don't need the AC on much only in the late afternoon on some days and then have windows open at night. So nice at cool in the nights. Great weather he so far this summer. |

You will see a drop in your bill in a month . Quoting: Anonymous Coward 759841those bulbs are toxic and are known to put out radiation , inside the bulb is mercury.. Common Symptoms Resulting From Exposure To "Energy Efficient" Light Bulbs * Dizziness * Cluster headaches * Migraines * Seizures * Fatigue * Inability to concentrate * Anxiety We've all heard the spin about how we should choose high efficiency bulbs... the ones with spiral tubes. As a result, we looked into the health problems that surround them, and were alarmed. These things can turn all of the wiring in your house into radiation antenna's. Read this article, and tell everyone that you know before these bulbs are made mandatory in this country (like in Europe). The actual story, with photos and sources can be found at [link to healthwyze.org] Why You Need To Know A Little Something About High Frequency Currents You may be asking why would our readers need to know these things? That comes really soon, so be careful what you wish for. (Just kidding.) As I mentioned earlier, a new radiation threat is upon us all. In lieu of this, I must begin by emphasizing the 'radio' and 'radiant' roots for the word radiation. They ultimately are descriptions of the same phenomena: radiant energy in the form of electromagnetic waves of pulsating energy. So, how does the energy actually radiate itself outward? The truth is, we don't really understand that part. Physicists have pulled their hair out for decades over that question. What we do know is that when things vibrate at a nuclear level or have electrical current changes, then these changes of state ― these frequencies ― cause energy to be radiated outward at the same frequencies. This is how radio transmissions work. Radio transmissions merely mix the audio (voice) signal with an exact frequency that listening radios are "tuned" for, and viola! Or as my past electronics teachers would have said, in their fancy-smancy engineering terms: "It will have imparted intelligence upon the carrier wave". A good analogy of how frequencies operate is remembering the ripples from a time when you dropped a pebble into a small creek or pond. You may recall that the ripples were reflected from the banks at exactly the same rate and distance that the original waves struck it. The whole point of this paragraph is to make clear that the very basis of radiant energy transmissions and all types of radiation on the entire electromagnetic spectrum boil down to one thing: frequencies. Frequencies determine how far the energy travels, how well it penetrates, and how it effects things. The ultra high frequencies of gamma (ie. nuclear) radiation will quickly destroy a person through burns, cancer, or otherwise; while the low 60 Hz. of standard American power has little effect in typical exposure. Frequency determines if the energy is radio, microwave, infrared light, visible light, x-rays, gamma, or ultraviolet. There is real power in frequencies. No pun intended. As a general rule, the higher the frequency, the more dangerous the energy is. Nuclear radiation is at a really high frequency, for example. For years, we have heard about how incandescent bulbs are bad for the environment. This made way for a whole new industry of "green" bulbs, marketed to the growing portion of people who seek to address environmental concerns. However, they actually compromise people's health, and are ultimately more harmful to the environment. Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

Power in your house will stay at what you decide, and not at the whim of the power company. Even consider making all lighting and getting appliances that run on 12Vdc. Set the timer to recharge the batteries to the time of the day when power is sold at the most inexpensive rate, and ask the power company to let you buy power when they sell it cheapest. Draw your power from the batteries first, not from the power line. The plus to doing this is when the power goes out for your neighbors you can automatically shunt power to some lighting and your food storage appliances. Food lost to power failure should be included in the price of power used. “Queen Sarah, save us from the Black Dog King!” - from the play, Dissocia [link to tasaonline.org.au (secure)] "Never be anyone's French poodle." - Mr Hamilton |

Have you checked the insulation in the attic? Or updated the windows or weather-striping around your doors? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1042313Yup -- I would be curious to know just how many hours that ac unit is running per day -- even when set at 78/83. An old unit can really suck the power and if the house isn't well insulated, it will cost you. I'm in hot Georgia and have three ac units, two pool motors, five refrigerators (my husband has work samples he has to keep cool) and several people in the house and our bill isn't a lot over OPs. Remember that refrigerators run more efficiently when full, so fill extra space in the freezer with ice and keep the fridge full of bottled waters. Since some of my husband's fridges are in the garage (where it's always hot), we have tried this and it really helps. Of course, it also gives him an excuse to stash beer where there's extra space. The oldest one (which was like 20+ years old) in the garage gave out and we bought a new one -- I think our bill dropped at least $50 a month just replacing that old, inefficient one. I noticed our new dishwasher and clothes dryer made a difference, too. Many electric companies will come out and do an energy audit for free -- they will tell you if you are losing a lot through windows, doors, attics, etc., and will give you tips on what to do to fix the problem. |
