Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
A couple of years ago I was visiting a friend who showed me the perfect way to get cheap electricity. He had a black box with 3 wires coming out. 2 wires had probes on the end and the 3rd had a crocodile clip. He connected the clip to earth and pushed the probe wires in the 2 positive connections on the meter. The result was it made the meter run backwards and the more power you used, the faster it went back. In fact, there was a good black market for these boxes for a while and he made a good living making and selling them for £100 a time. He said the device was a "Murphy Coil" and that anybody who works with electric motors would know what it was. It seems they are used to make electric motors capable of running in either direction. Totally undetectable unless they actually catch you using it. He used to connect at night and take it off every morning but he had to make sure he didn't use it too much or else his meter readings would be less each time they came to read it. I remember seeing an article about it in the press at the time and it seems it is a big problem over here.

Change all your light bulbs to energy saving bulbs like so [link to mattsimmsy.files.wordpress.com] . You will see a drop in your bill in a month .

Thanks. I put those in almost a year ago. I guess I overlooked the decrease.

Pleas be careful with disposing those. Many people don't know that if they break gasses leak out and I believe there's mercury in it too.

And to the other poster: Yes I know it's illegal but I thought price gouging was too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 748689

Those bulbs generate really FILTHY energy-check with a Geiger counter and you will see...

2014 legally required and the only place they make them is in China

the EPA has about 15 pages as to how to legally dispose of them and many will be fined if they fail to follow UN nanny rules

serious fines will be levied down the line if they continue in power.

I took the few out that I had

One bulb can contaminate 3000 gallons of water

but no one minds the coreXit that removes oxygen from air and water-killing many it seems and lots of brain cells or borg electronics...

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
Miggy - I know that this is a silly question, but do you have skylights in your home? I have 2, and they are located on the south side so the sun comes in and FRIES anything it touches, it will mold bread in a day! I went to a local hydroponic store (probably any large garden supply store would work) and bought a roll of silver reflective film. Indoor growers often use this film to line their walls so as to get the most out of their lighting systems. I started with the cheaper, lighter film which worked ok, but the sun would make it brittle and by fall, any wind would scatter little silver pieces all over the lawn. So I bought a roll of heavier-duty stuff which looks sort of "woven". That has worked much better; as a matter of fact I'm using the same pieces for the third year in a row.

Anyway, I cut pieces of the film to cover my skylights (actually a little bit larger so that there would be extra) and had a kind neighbor climb up on my roof and place them over my skylights mid-Spring before it started getting hot. Of course you will want to weigh them down, so I put gravel into old socks and tied them to place upon the extra yardage overhanging the skylight. I leave the film on my skylights all Summer, and it lowers the inside temp by about 20 degrees (and no more moldy bread!). When the weather breaks in late Fall I co-erce the neighbor to climb up and dismantle the whole shebang. The roll was a little spendy - about $75 - but it's really LONG and as I said I am re-using the same original pieces for the third year in a row. Perhaps you could find friends/neighbors with skylights who could split the cost with you. The rooms are darker, but the heat reduction makes it all worthwhile.

We're in Central Oregon. Power bill this month (Sept.)was $45.54.. well the "electric charge" was $34.16 and the "facillities charge" whatever that is, was $11.75.
2400 sq. ft. house, wash and dry clothes every day, coffeemaker, microwave, use ovens a lot... just live a normal life. Our bill is reasonable.

Lighting is a minimal part of your electric bill. HVAC (includes heat pump for heat in winter) fridge, elctric water heater, well pump (if you have one) dishwasher. These are the energy gobblers, as they use more killiwats than lighting. Add them up and that is where your high bill comes from. the main culprit is HVAC. over insulate your attic, and get a programable thermostat and watch you bill REALLY go down.

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
Hello Miggy,

I agree with you that your bill seems high especially since you seem to try to lower the consumption and it doesnt show on your bill.
A year ago, as a favour to a customer who had a same complaint for months, I visited his premises with an eletrician (meaning inside the household, which is against our standard procedures).
After thorough check on their in house installation, we came to conclusion that the whole consumption is 70% located on one fuse, which is illogical.
By switching off one element at a time, we finally got to the fridge plug and once this plug was unplugged the meter slowed down.
We tried the frigde on another plug and the meter speed up bot not as much as previously.
To cut it down: the final conclusion was that the wiring was old, the insulation was cracked somewhere inside the walls and the customer had to change in house installation. Once he actually went for this investment his bill got normal and he was paying only 1/5 of his previous bill.

After years of work for utility, keeping also energy saving workshops, I tend to find myself repeating that old fridges are usualy spending far more than a new one (energy efficiency class A) would.
Old TV set if not switched off manually tends to spend up to 75% of energy it would usually spend if it was turned on.
Wish you all the best

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
Thank you everyone! What a wonderful human community! Your thoughts, suggestions, and hilarious comments cracked me up!
My utility bill is $300.00 for the month. (Poconos of Pennsylvania, temp. has been unseasonably warm!) Outrageous! The philosophy about the rich and poor had a severe GAP! It sounded logical and fancy but ara..ara.. Many poor or working poor, are being swindled! You all know about the Energy Companies theft! ENRON! What they did was horrendous! Did any hierarchy suicide afterwards, I forgot? The massive amount of MONEY being collected by utility companies and others is staggering! Just think, a bounced check for $10.00 or a debit transaction for .50cents both processed will cost THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS if the funds are insufficient! What? That's legal USURY! We live in the best of times and the worst of times "ATOTC". We all must get smarter! Like them! We must increase our Legal Creativity and Awareness! Finally, I need my gorgeous gear! If you haven't bought anything new in 3 years please send me your size. I can make you something beautiful for FREE! Hugs and love to everyone! Sunshine

I pull my main breaker every time I leave the house. Just remember not to hit the fridge breaker. I have cut my bill in half.

Everything that is plugged it can use electricity even if the item is turned off.

+1
^^main rates are set per hot water. counter hot water - the main problem. I decided the problem so - from above the counter is the filter. I take off the filter and push through the tube a thin wire. it blocks the wheel . no injuries. unprovable.
 Quoting: Putin V.V.

I read where someone got caught using the pin to slow down the meter or totally stop the wheel. My question is, if you know the day they come to read the meter and pull the pin out a day before and a day after the meter reading, how can you get caught? Is there a way they can tell the wheel is stop at their offices?

If you think your meter is bad, just put a crack in the glass and the meter reader will report it. A new meter will be installed in very short order.
If you don't have meter readers, report it yourself.

Re: How to slow down your electric meter.
As what was explained to me by someone in the past, is that they do not come physically read your meters every month. Instead they work from averages (now I dont know if its just your home averages, or averages for the neighborhood or even by zip code) and that usually these averages are not to your benefit.

What I was told I can do, is read the meter myself and report it and if it doesnt match, they have to come look at it, and guess what........your bill gets adjusted.

So my advice would first be to learn how to read your own meter, then learn about how to report your findings.

Its really sad we have to be like this isn't it? Just like when you go to the gas station, how do you KNOW you are putting in exactly what you are paying for?

Here in NZ our power companies, that my parents and grandparents brought and paid for, through taxation, are about to be sold on the open market.
Our Guvimint, wants NZers to buy shares in these companies, so they are trying to sell us shit we already own.
Power is ridiculously expensive already, and I imagine its about to get worse.

Fantastic topic.

My electric meter stopped working three months ago, since then I've been getting electric bills showing that I use no electricity at all. I didn't tamper with it or anything, it just stopped spinning altogether. They'll probably figure it out eventually, but I'm not going to say anything!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 934958

When you get the bill it won't be so great. Generally they will take your highest bill and multiply it by the missing number of months. That way they are covered and you get taken to the cleaners.

dude, people will sympathise, but what you're talking about is illegal. The energy companies are another control system sucking us dry.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 728812

It's Illegal why? The law is in place cause power companies lobby to get laws like this put in cause they want to use sand paper when they screw you. Not all things Illegal are wrong. Take the Underground railroad for example. You and all the others who have time to point out obvious bits of info are the reason why most forums have trolls and people worse than trolls who answer questions with irrelevant information. It doesn't answer the question and if you don't have anything useful than shut up! Dummy! Thanks for wasting my time writing this pointless point to point out your incorrect point. peace.
