But from a personal standpoint, having experienced similar symptoms, I think we might be clinging to them as an important characteristic of identity. Maybe they've been a part of life for so long that despite the negativity, we hold on to them as something familiar. I know this will sound ridiculous when actually experiencing the vertigo (for example), but hopefully locating that sense of self within the disease will ease it up a bit.
