I planted a Green and Yellow squash right next to the compost bin. They must be getting nutrients from the compost because they are Huge. 5 feet square and we have more squash then we can eat. |

ELECTRIC FENCE!! Invest in a 'Fido-shock' system, it is inexpensive and easy to install.
[link to www.amazon.com]
I would put one wire down close to the ground, one half way up and one on the top of the fence.
I have a permanent perennial herb garden with all the herbs I like to use (including bay)
My fall garden consists of greens of all types, three different kinds of carrots, three different kinds of peas, two kinds of broccoli, raab broccoli...so far.
The tomatoes are still producing, as well as the squash.
I have an abundance of wierd hybrid pumpkins that volunteered on their own in the thick mulch I am creating from barn cleanings.
They are an odd shape, but most will keep all winter. We could eat them in a pinch, but the animals get them for treats during the winter.
The dry beans failed miserably. They became infected with some sort of fungus disease, and since I do not like to spray things I am going to eat, I guess I won't be planting them next year. (green beans do fine, though--go figure)
I don't grow a lot of variety, right now, but when the time comes I have a great variety of seeds to plant. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” ~Romans 12:21

Thanks, Ziggy. Those electric fences look interesting, certainly inexpensive enough to afford several, but the won't work where my garden is located now. It's hard to explain, but my small garden is in a wide u shape, surrounded on one side by the house wall, then enclosed with lattice on the other three sides, with an arbour entrance and my patio in the middle. Yeah, i know, lol.
The thing is, squirrels can jump, climb, and squeeze through damn near anything. Groundhogs will dig under or climb over fences. Raccoons will climb but i don't think they'll dig under. I'm facing a triple threat here and extermination appears to be the only solution. I'm only kidding about the guns, i'm in the burbs and using a firearm would bring a Swat team and a dozen red dots on my head in minutes, lol. |

Nice!!! Evil, you will have to send me some grapefruit, I can't grow it up North and I will send you some cantaloupe. That's if the varmints don't get to them before they grow to maturity.

I would imagine that the ground hogs can be deterred by placing the bottom wire out a bit with a plastic extender, but very low to the ground.
The raccoons should be deterred by a top wire over all the area, even the house wall, but the middle wire will help around the rest of the area.
Squirrels are tricky...you will have to find which areas they jump down from and jump up to...that is your spot for a well placed wire.
My only pest are deer, but they do enough damage in just one night...and an 8' fence is too cost prohibitive, so I cover my rows with bird netting. The light netting is enough to foil the hungriest deer.
When TSHTF they'll be the first on the menu in my house. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” ~Romans 12:21

Raccoons climbed up the old tv antenna and went in my fireplace chimney. I pulled down the antenna and they just ckimb up the neighbours stupid tree onto his car port, then jump to my porch roof (tearing off the shingles), then climb up to my eavestrough (tearing it off the house), and acrosss the roof to my chimney.
Fuckers went nuts one night and started tearing through the roof, right through the shingles and into the wood. I'm into thousands in damage now and DEMAND REVENGE.
Squirrels? Those dirty lil bastards ate a hole though the soffit beside the aforementioned chimney. I covered the hole and they made a new one beside the power mast. Just for shits n' giggles, they chewed my cable wire, mostly killing the phone, fucking up the tv, don't know why the internet was still ok, but thank god for small mercies.
I will kill them at the first opportunity. :( |

I had a problem with the little bastards getting in my patch behind the green-house so i made a nice little sittin area inside the my green-house then took out a pipe that went down the side and it was just the right size for my 410.
They were after my sunflowers and would climb them until they would bend to the ground and take my seed pods, after a week of waiting daily and getting a couple a day im finally free of the little bastards.
Good luck with your little bastards man,if they did all that shit on my house it would be war on the beast. |

Havahart traps are a good idea, you can catch them with some yummy bait then dispatch them later. Don't be surprised to catch a lot of coons. My mother set up a trap in her garage and caught five in a couple of weeks.
Squirrels are difficult to nab. My traps fail to trip due to the ground squirrel's light weight (and perhaps cheap construction of things now days) so I carefully use poison bait. I put it in lengths of 4" PVC tubes that other animals like my chickens can't get in to.
Damn things cleaned out the bait to store for winter, not necessarily eating it, so I have an uneven kill rate.
One was bold enough to creep into my backyard. The .22 took care of that one, but due to extreme fire danger I don't dare fire off a round now.
Trapping may be your only success in your case, unless you have the room to shoot them. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” ~Romans 12:21

I had to get rid of a beautiful Mulberry tree because the raccoons were climbing up it unto my roof. I went outside one night because I heard some scratching, I look up and there are three raccoons looking at me from the top of my roof. They all three ran down the tree before I could hit them with my bat. |
