Monsanto has been exposed in the news, though it is difficult. Two Fox reporters were fired after refusing to change their story about BGH. This Fox News story on aspartame actually aired.

TO understand Monsanto's influence in government, just look at the number of officials in the Bush administration that have connections to Monsanto.

* Clarence Thomas, Monsanto's lawyer, appointed to the Supreme Court by George Bush, Sr. Thomas cast the deciding swing vote giving the election to George, Jr.
* Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense. Was appointed chairman of Searle (owned by Monsanto) to suppress FDA findings and obstruct justice, when Searle was looking at criminal fraud charges for knowingly misrepresenting findings and withholding adverse data on aspartame.
* Ann Veneman, Secretary of Agriculture. Formerly a lawyer with a firm specializing in representing agribusiness giants and biotech corporations. In California, she encouraged policies helping giant corporate farms squeeze out family-owned farms. Was on the board of directors of Calgene Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the first gene-altered crop introduced in the U.S., owned by Monsanto.
* Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health. Before BGH was approved, Wisconsin's dairy farmers protested its approval and seeked a moratorium for its use. Governor Thompson lifted that moratorium, despite the fact that 90% of the calls to his office voiced support for the moratorium. Thompson recently received a $50,000 gift from the biotechnology industry. While governor, he received $50,000 from Biotech firms and used state funds to set up a a $317 million dollar biotechnology zone.
* Mitch Daniels, Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Daniels was the vice president of corporate strategy at Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical company. Eli Lilly and Monsanto developed BGH. Lilly "owns" the European "franchise." Daniels presence insures that the bovine growth hormone will one day be approved for use in Europe.
* John Ashcroft, Attorney General. Was the top recipient of Monsanto contributions during his losing reelection campaign for senator from Missouri (Monsanto is a Missouri company). While he was in the Senate, Ashcroft fought hard for Monsanto. He was active abroad in convincing hesitant nations to accept genetically engineered crops and is credited with persuading the British to push for European Union acceptance of Monsanto's Roundup Ready corn.
* Linda Fisher, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Agency. Former Assistant Administrator of the
United States Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pollution Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, then
Vice President of Government and Public Affairs for Monsanto Corporation .
* Larry Thompson, Deputy Attorney General, under Ashcroft. Served as Monsanto's in-house counsel.

In 1994 the FDA approved the use of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST -- better known as bovine growth hormone -- BGH), a genetically-engineered hormone manufactured by Monsanto that increases milk production in cows by 10 percent to 25 percent. BGH is banned in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and all of the Europeon Union.
New information from Canadian government researchers indicates that the Monsanto Company and/or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration covered up the results of a primary human safety study which found that rats exposed to rBGH experienced negative health effects: findings which should have led to long term human health studies before rBGH was approved. rBGH is banned in Europe, Canada, Autralia, New Zealand, and other countries because of these potential threats to people and family farmers.

In the Fall of 1994, Canadian television quoted a Canadian health official as reporting Monsanto offered $1-2 million if her government committee would recommend BGH approval in Canada without further data or studies of the drug. Another member of her committee who was present when Monsanto made the offer was asked: "Was that a bribe?"

"Monsanto said the report alleging bribery was"a blatant untruth", that Canadian regulators just didn't understand theoffer of the money was for research. Monsanto demanded a retraction. The CanadianBroadcasting Company stands by its story."

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has interjected itself into the debate on Oregon's Measure 27, a ballot initiative that to decide whether the State will require the labeling of foods that have been genetically modified or contain genetically modified ingredients (see Sublegals, 6:05/03; 6:03/09; 5:26/02). Although the FDA has no authority over state consumer protection laws, that did not deter FDA Deputy Commission Lester Crawford from sending a letter to Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, claiming Measure 27 "would impermissibly interfere with manufacturers' ability to market their products on a nationwide basis." According to a USA Today article, Lester goes on to say, "In this letter, we are not promising to take action, but we are letting the people of Oregon know, as best we can, what our views are about the ordinance." Is the FDA Monsanto's Washington branch office ?
Dr. Virginia Weldon, VP for Public Policy at Monsanto Chemical is a "top candidate" to become Commissioner of the FDA, reported the St. Louis Post Dispatch Monday. FDA approved Monsanto's NutraSweet, Equal and bovine hormone, Prosilac, which are under mounting international medical and consumer criticism as toxic substances. NutraSweet and Equal are Monsanto brands of the neurotoxin aspartame. The original developer of NutraSweet was Searle which was acquired by Monsanto in l985. "If Weldon gets the appointment Monsanto will have its former Vice President empowered to bless dozens of new Monsanto bioengineered chemicals and sweeteners. NutraSweet 2000 is slated for approval in l998 according to 4/21/97 Chemical & Engineering News. Has Dr. Weldon been told to approve it! "These job swaps by FDA officials are a well oiled revolving door that doesn't even squeak, it just stinks", says Betty Martini, founder of Mission Possible. "The FDA is Monsanto's Washington branch office."

Monsanto researcher Margaret Miller who worked on the bovine growth hormone, transferred to FDA and got the job of reviewing her own research. Miller increased the antibiotic protocol for milk to permit an increase f 10,000 percent. Cows treated with rBST require more antibiotics because of rampant udder infections. Monsanto attorney Michael Taylor was hired by FDA to a powerful position where he could oversee the rBST approval process.

In l977 Justice Department attorneys Sam Skinner and William Conlon were assigned to prosecute Searle for submitting fradulent tests on NutraSweet. They switched sides to join the defense lawyers and the case died when the statute of limitations expired. On 2/7/86 the Wall Street Journal reported the probe of these two ex-U.S. Prosecutors by Senate investigators.

Former FDA Commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes who approved NutraSweet and ignored the contrary recommendations of his own Task Force became a consultant to Searle's public relations firm, Burston Marsteller. Hayes was being investigated for accepting gratuities when he quit.

David Kessler, the FDA Commissioner who recently retired when questioned for padding his expense account, gave blanket approval to NutraSweet even though it has an allowable daily intake, without public notification in June. He has protected Monsanto by ignoring the FDA register of 10,000 complaints and their published list of 92 reactions to aspartame from coma and blindness to seizures and death. Kessler refused to demand chemical breakdown tests of the drug. The original work was just done by 11 year old Jennifer Cohen for a school science project as reported in the Food Chemical News, May 5. She stored 7 cans of Diet Coke in a refrigeraetor for 10 weeks which broke down and released formaldehyde and diketopiperazine, a brain tumor agent. The cola was analyzed by Winston Laboratories in Ridgefield, New Jersey (201 -440-0022). According to the Food Chemical News the FDA said they knew it all along.

On June 2, l995 H. J. Roberts, M.D. wrote Newt Gingrich and said: ".. Congress must review this threat at a new open hearing (aspartame disease), and second, it should declare aspartame products to be an "imminent public health hazard" and withdraw them from the market".. He wrote on the association of brain tumors with aspartame in a peer reviewed report in the Journal of Advancement in Medicine, Vol 4, Number 4, Winter 1991. John W. Olney, M.D. made world news when he announced the increase in brain tumors (of the variety the rats developed in original studies) and questioned the link to aspartame in Nov. 96 in the J. Neuropath Exp. Neurol. Vol 55, No. 11. As reported by Dr. Frank Walton on 60 Minutes, Dec 29, of 90 independent studies not funded by the manufacturer, 83 showed problems with aspartame. Dr. Virginia Weldon now considered a top contender for FDA Commissioner appeared to defend the NutraSweet Co. (Monsanto).

A demand for recall of aspartame has been issued by Mission Possible based on the fact that a pivotal study that approved aspartame, SC 18862, showed that aspartame triggered grand mal seizures in 6 out of 7 monkeys, the 7th died. Mrs. Martini says: "I fail to see how grand mal seizures prove safety! The FDA report of symptoms list 4 different types of seizures in the public." Acting FDA Commissioner Michael Friedman has not answered this demand.

James Turner, Washington based attorney, explained on 60 Minutes that the original studies on aspartame never proved safety and were not replicated.


The late FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that aspartame violated the Delaney Amendment because it triggered brain tumors, astrocytomas (first stage of the deadly glioblastoma now said to be rampant in the population). The Bressler Report exposed mammary, uterine and ovarian tumors. Rats listed as dead appeared alive later in the report!

Now comes a translator giving a notarized statement that Searle had replicated the studies on humans in other countries and that she and a Mexican physician translated them.

Even though the studies were short in duration, not over 18 months, she says subjects began dropping out with astrocytomas and seizures.

This confirms the link of brain tumors to aspartame continually warned by Roberts and Olney.

She says the studies were done on poor people in villages of South America and that the people were told aspartame was made from papaya.

Aspartame is a molecule composed of three components: aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol.

Methanol, a severe metabolic poison, converts to formaldehyde and formic acid and causes metabolic acidosis.

Phenylalanine and aspartic acid when isolated from the other amino acids in protein go past the blood brain barrier and deteriorate the neurons of the brain causing brain damage of varying degrees, according to H. J. Roberts, M.D., and neurosurgeon, Russell Blaylock, M.D.

Phenylalanine breaks down into DKP, the brain tumor agent.

Conversion to DKP was admitted on secret trade information discussed in Congress.

Dr. Virginia Weldon is a pediatrician, and Pediatric Professor, Dr. Louis Elsas (Emory/Genetics) testified before Congress in l987 that aspartame is a neurotoxin and teratogen (triggers birth defects!).

Once upon a time, aspartame was listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent. Today it's an integral part of the modern diet. Sold commercially under names like NutraSweet and Canderel, aspartame can be found in more than 5,000 foods, including fizzy drinks, chewing gum, table-top sweeteners, diet and diabetic foods, breakfast cereals, jams, sweets, vitamins, prescription and over-the-counter drugs. his means that there is a good chance that you and your family are among the two thirds of the adult population and 40 per cent of children who regularly ingest this artificial sweetener.

Because it contains no calories, aspartame is considered a boon to health-conscious individuals everywhere; and most of us, if we think about it at all, think it is safe.

But independent scientists say aspartame can produce a range of disturbing adverse effects in humans, including headaches, memory loss, mood swings, seizures, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's-like symptoms, tumours and even death.

Concerns over aspartame's toxicity meant that for eight years, the US Food and Drug

Administration (FDA) denied it approval, effectively keeping it off the world market.

This caution was based on compelling evidence, brought to light by numerous eminent scientists, litigators and consumer groups, that aspartame contributed to serious central nervous system damage and had been shown to cause cancer in animals.

Eventually, however, political muscle, won out over scientific rigour, and aspartame was approved for use in 1981 (see timeline for details).

We have now restored these studies to the Bressler Report, thanks to Dr. John Olney and Dr. Madelon Price. We also thank Jerome Bressler for his constant persistence in motivating us to locate these studies. He emphasized the report was not complete without them. H. J. Roberts, M.D., who testified before Congress and wrote the 1000 page medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic,

The results were kept under FDA seal for 3 decades. Indeed the Bressler Report and other studies should have precluded FDA from approving aspartame for human consumption. For instance, its unconscionable that brain tumors were actually removed from the rats.

After this case report was published in the medical literature, many patients with unexplained seizures or treatment resistant psychiatric problems were referred to me. I became increasingly convinced that aspartame could both trigger seizure activity and mimic or exacerbate a variety of psychiatric disorders. I presented a paper based on those patients at a 1987 MIT sponsored conference on Dietary Phenylalanine and Brain Function.

Industry sponsored criticism was made, however, that my conclusions regarding aspartame's toxicity could not be accepted as valid because my case reports were "merely anecdotal" and not based on double blind research.

Unfortunately case reports do not currently have the respect in mainstream medical literature which they deserve (historically much of medical progress has been based on careful observation of individual patients).

Nevertheless, I was so convinced of aspartame's toxicity, and the need to have its hazards more widely appreciated in the medical community, that I did undertake a double blind study.

That study -"Adverse Reactions to Aspartame: Double-Blind Challenge in Patients from a Vulnerable Population" was published in Biological Psychiatry in 1993. It demonstrated that individuals with mood disorders are particularly sensitive to aspartame and experienced an accentuation of depression and multiple physical symptoms. I had expected that the difficulties experienced by patients receiving aspartame would be fairly subtle (the dose of 30mg/kg/day was well below the level of 50mg/kg/day which the FDA considered "safe").

I was not prepared for the severity of the reactions, and for obvious ethical reasons cannot perform any further human studies with aspartame.

Over the ensuing years I have continued to see the multiple neurologic and psychiatric consequences of aspartame use. It can lower the seizure threshold and lead to an incorrect diagnosis of epilepsy, with subsequent inappropriate prescription of anticonvulsants. It can mimic or exacerbate symptoms of MS, it can paradoxically produce carbohydrate craving and weight gain. The world-wide epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes obviously has multiple causes, but I am convinced aspartame is a major factor.

I have said if one cooks with aspartame it breaks down into awful stuff...one is formaldehyde...

Research conducted by scientists at the University of Barcelona and published in the scientific journal Life Sciences (Vol. 63, No. 5, Pp. 337-349, 1998) shows that animals given aspartame at doses obtainable by humans had an accumulation of formaldehyde (bound to proteins) known as "adducts." These formaldehyde adducts difficult to eliminate and are well known to cause chronic toxicity. Formaldehyde has been shown to cause damage to the nervous system, immune system and irreversible genetic damage. The authors conclude that "aspartame consumption may constitute a hazard because of its contribution to the formation of formaldehyde adducts."

An extremely large number of adverse reaction reports have been linked to the ingestion of Monsanto-produced aspartame. It was recently detailed that nearly 100% of independent research has found problems with aspartame. Now, this research showing formaldehyde adduct accumulation will likely lead to a much larger number of lawsuits against Monsanto for aspartame poisoning than the one that had filed earlier this year.

Analysis Shows Nearly 100% of Independent Research Finds Problems With Aspartame
October 17, 1996

An analysis of peer reviewed medical literature using MEDLINE and other databases was conducted by Ralph G. Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Dr. Walton analyzed 164 studies which were felt to have relevance to human safety questions. Of those studies, 74 studies had aspartame industry-related sponsorship and 90 were funded without any industry money.

Of the 90 non-industry-sponsored studies, 83 (92%) identified one or more problems with aspartame. Of the 7 studies which did not find a problems, 6 of those studies were conducted by the FDA. Given that a number of FDA officials went to work for the aspartame industry immediately following approval (including the former FDA Commissioner), many consider these studies to be equivalent to industry-sponsored research.

Of the 74 aspartame industry-sponsored studies, all 74 (100%) claimed that no problems were found with aspartame. Dr. James Bowen was 30 in 1983, when he nearly died from drinking aspartame laced Diet Kool Aid. He began to research why this chemical is so destructive and when he went public it cost Dr. Bowen his medical practice, safety, freedoms and personal liberties. These vile consequences were triggered by his 1984 appearance on CBS Evening News when he warned America.

Dr Bowen relates: "I was one of only two independent scientists, who ever read the original aspartame toxicity studies from FDA files. They were done at only 1/1000th the legally requisite dose. In that minuscule dosage the rat brain cancer was the worst ever caused by any chemical ever tested at any dosage! When they marketed aspartame for soft drinks in 1983, the next six months saw a 10% jump in the US brain tumor rate, and also a 30% jump in the incidence of new cases of diabetes.

How Donald Rumsfeld pushed aspartame (nutrasweet) through the FDA onto our tables and into our bodies with no regard for the truth or our health

Dear Senator Biden:

The news talks about you asking Donald Rumsfeld to step down which has to do with the Iraq situation.

I would like to call your attention to when Donald Rumsfeld was CEO of Searle, manufacturers of aspartame. For 16 years the FDA refused to approve it, not only because its not safe but because they wanted the company indicted for fraud. Both U.S. Prosecutors hired on with the defense team and the statute of limitations expired. They were Sam Skinner and William Conlon. Skinner went on to become Secretary of Transportation squelching the cries of the pilots who were by now having seizures on this seizure triggering drug, aspartame, and then Chief of Staff under President Bush's father. Some of these people reach high places. Even Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas is a former Monsanto attorney. (Monsanto bought Searle in l985, and sold it a few years ago). When Ashcroft became Attorney General, Thompson from King and Spalding Attorneys (another former Monsanto attorney) became deputy under Ashcroft. (Attorneys for NutraSweet and Coke).

However, the FDA still refused to allow NutraSweet on the market. It is a deadly neurotoxic drug masquerading as an additive. It interacts with all antidepressants, L-dopa, Coumadin, hormones, insulin, all cardiac medication, and many others. It also is a chemical hypersensitization drug so that it interacts with vaccines, other toxins, other unsafe sweeteners like Splenda which has a chlorinated base like DDT and can cause autoimmune disease. It has a synergistic and additive effect with MSG. (www.truthinlabeling.org). Both being excitotoxins, the aspartic acid in aspartame, and MSG, the glutamate people were found using aspartame as the placebo for MSG studies, even before it was approved. The FDA has known this for a quarter of a century and done nothing even though its against the law. Searle went on to build a NutraSweet factory and had $9 million worth of inventory.

Donald Rumsfeld was on President Reagan's transition team and the day after he took office he appointed an FDA Commissioner who would approve aspartame. The FDA set up a Board of Inquiry of the best scientists they had to offer, who said aspartame is not safe and causes brain tumors, and the petition for approval is hereby revoked. The new FDA Commissioner, Arthur Hull Hayes, over-ruled that Board of Inquiry and then went to work for the PR Agency of the manufacturer, Burson-Marsteller, at a rumored $1000.00 a day, and has refused to talk to the press ever since. In order to get it in other countries, Searle made a business deal with Professor Paul Turner in England.

They knew if England found out the FDA wanted them indicted for fraud it could never get approved.

Parliament found out and there was a big blow out but the order was never rescinded. The story was in the Guardian.

Now all they had to do was rubberstamp this deadly poison around the world.

There were three congressional hearings because of the outcry of the people being poisoned. Senator Orrin Hatch refused to allow hearings for a long time.

The first hearing was in 1985, and Senator Hatch and others were paid by Monsanto. So the bill by Senator Metzenbaum never got out of committee.

This bill would have put a moratorium on aspartame, and [would have] had the NIH do independent studies on the problems being seen in the population, interaction with drugs, seizures, what it does to the fetus and even behavioral problems in children.

This is due to the depletion of serotonin caused by the phenylalanine in aspartame.

I spoke to the European Union a couple of years ago and brought them the damning government records so they would know that aspartame was never proven safe.

This was at the time they were going to write a new report, again because of the outcry on aspartame.

I also gave them some of Monsanto's flawed research and showed them what they had done.

You can't show a poison to be safe on studies without fixing them.

But those from industry were part of the committee so what the EU did was eliminate all the damning research and use the flawed.

With regard to Desert Storm Syndrome, you may recall the government did a study and came up with Lou Gehrigs. The pop companies sent aspartame laced pop to the Persian Gulf to sit in the 120 degree Arabian sun and break down to formaldehyde cocktails. Go to www.dorway.com and read the protest of the National Soft Drink Association and you'll see they said it decomposes at 86 degrees. So the pop companies knew the gun was loaded. The NSDA also quoted the law that said it's illegal to put anything in carbonated beverages that decomposes or adulterates the drink. Yet the pop companies turned around and added it to the beverages anyway. And it would interact with vaccines like the Antrax given to the troops - never approved by the FDA. Back in 1996 when Dr. John Olney (founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity, and attempted to stop the approval of aspartame with Attorney James Turner) made world news on the aspartame/brain tumor connection he was on 60 Minutes. Michael Friedman knowing full well the main reason the FDA [had] refused to allow aspartame on the market for 16 years was the brain tumors, got on 60 Minutes and defended Monsanto by saying aspartame did not cause brain tumors. Yet the FDA's own toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that without a shadow of a doubt aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer, and violated the Delaney Amendment which forbid putting anything in food you know will cause cancer. His last words to Congress were "And if the FDA violates its own law, who is left to protect the public?" All you have to do is read the Bressler Report (FDA audit) on www.dorway.com where Searle was caught excising brain tumors from the rats and putting them back in the study. When the rats died they resurrected them on paper. I spoke with Jerome Bressler as did Dr. H. J. Roberts (Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, www.sunsentpress.com or 1 800 827 7991) and neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D. (author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, www.russellblaylockmd.com ). He told us the studies were so bad that the FDA removed the 20% of his report that was the most damning. He also said to try and attain a cover letter as well as two mice studies. Dr. Roberts wrote his congressman to get this, but the FDA refused.

I asked Michael Friedman when he was going to get his reward for selling out to Monsanto, but he never answered. In June 1999 he got his reward when Monsanto hired him. I told him at the time the FDA no longer needed a revolving door, they could build a bridge to take care of the traffic.

Today we are faced with what may be one of the largest plagues in world history, Aspartame Disease. When he died and [they] saw the methanol poisoning they thought his wife poisoned him. This Sunday school teacher is now serving 50 years in a Troy Virginia prison for a crime committed by the manufacturers of aspartame. Four doctors have written affidavits that Fleming died of aspartame but the medical examiner, Dr. Marcello Fierro (friend of Orrin Hatch) has refused to talk to Dr. Roberts even when a meeting was set up for that reason. He wrote one of the affidavits. He treated victims of aspartame disease in the trenches of medical practice for 20 years and testified before Congress. France's highest court has ruled that U.S. agrochemical giant Monsanto had not told the truth about the safety of its best-selling weed-killer, Roundup. The court confirmed an earlier judgment that Monsanto had falsely advertised its herbicide as "biodegradable" and claimed it "left the soil clean." Roundup is the world's best-selling herbicide.

French environmental groups had brought the case in 2001 on the basis that glyphosate, Roundup's main ingredient, is classed as "dangerous for the environment" by the European Union.

In the latest ruling, France's Supreme Court upheld two earlier convictions against Monsanto by the Lyon criminal court in 2007, and the Lyon court of appeal in 2008, the AFP news agency reports.

Monsanto already dominates America’s food chain with its genetically modified seeds. Now it has targeted milk production. Just as frightening as the corporation’s tactics, including ruthless legal battles against small farmers, is its decades-long history of toxic contamination.
