Attacked by Mites!
Went out to cut a few trees tuesday. Tuesday nite I get what I thought was a mild case of the hives. Scratched all night. Well when I get up Tuesday there's dozens of red bumps all over my legs and feet. Then I notice that each bump that I didn't get around to scratching had a tiney grey speck in the middle of it.

On closer inspection the tiney dots look like 1/20 sized ticks so small you can't hardly make out the legs. Seems they are too small for ticks and too big for chiggers so I'm guessing mites.

Wensday more tree cutting - more mites. The little fuckers cralled through my socks and down into my shoes. I've got twenty bites on my right foot alone. The left foot more than I can count. Shiiiiiiit! The ITCHING!! If not for H2O2 and Witch hazel it would have driven me nuts...oh wait.... pump2 pump2 pump2 pump2 pump2

They must be covering for the lack of ticks this year.

What woods? Backwoods Virginia.

chiggers?

Maybe but I believe chiggers are too small to see and take a couple of days to show symptoms. Chiggers crawl right down into your pores, these guys seem to have stayed on top as I could scrape them off and watch them move around.

Some ticks can start out very tiny, growing as they feed.

Now you know to tuck your pant legs in your boots and spray insect repellant on your legs, liberally!

Thanks for the advice but I think I'll just wait for cold weather before I get anywhere near these boogers again. Each bite spot is like a fire ant sting.

Scrub typhus is found in S.E. Asia.

"Typhus" is carried by human lice. And it ranks right up there with bubonic plague as a killer! It is much more common and has a 5 to 40% fatality rate. Typhus was brough under control in the 1940s via the liberal application of DDT directly on the body. Hey you learn something new every day!
