Mayon has had forty-nine eruptions in recorded history. The first recorded eruption was in 1616, the last major eruption ceased on 1 October 2006, [3] although a devastating lahar followed on 30 November 2006. A further summit eruption occurred on 10 August 2008. [4]


Mayon Volcano on September 23, 1984 The most destructive eruption of Mayon occurred on February 1, 1814. Lava flowed but not as much compared to the 1766 eruption. Instead, the volcano was belching dark ash and eventually bombarding the town with tephra that buried the town of Cagsawa—only the bell tower of the town's church remained above the new surface. Trees were burned; rivers were certainly damaged. Proximate areas were also devastated by the eruption with ash accumulating to 9 m (30 ft) in depth. 2,200 Albay locals perished in what is considered to be the most lethal eruption in Mayon's history.[1]

35 quakes rock Mayon anew

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—

At least 35 volcanic earthquakes jolted Mayon Volcano on Thursday and Friday, the highest recorded seismic event since July when the volcano started showing signs of restiveness, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Friday.

The surge in the number of volcanic tremors started in the Wednesday, with 14 tremors recorded during the Wednesday-to-Thursday monitoring period. Only one tremor was recorded in the previous 24-hour period from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Eduardo Laguerta, Phivolcs resident volcanologist, said the agency's seismic network recorded a total of 82 earthquakes since Sept. 27.

Scientists monitoring the volcano still do not discount the possibility of an explosive eruption because of the fluctuating indicators, such as quakes, ground swelling, gas emissions and crater glow.

Phivolcs' Friday advisory said high- and low-frequency harmonic tremors were detected by seismic instruments, signifying that magma intrusion was developing in the volcano's crater vent.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano indicated a fluctuating trend, ranging from 392 tons per day to 445 tons per day for the past three days.

No reading was recorded Thursday due to bad weather.

Precise leveling result indicated a 6-mm swelling on the volcano’s ground surface, with bulging noted at the Buang, Tabaco City, side of the mountain.

The volcano's crater glow was obscured by the prevailing bad weather in Albay.

Alert level 2 remained hoisted over Mayon Volcano.

The Phivolcs strongly recommended that the six-kilometer permanent danger zone and the seven-kilometer extended danger zone be off-limits to any human activity due to threat of sudden explosions and rockfalls from the upper slopes of the volcano.

Residents living along river channels, gullies and low-lying areas were also warned about possible lahar flows.

Mayon Volcano's sulfur dioxide emission rate increases

More State volcanologists on Monday observed a nearly 350-ton increase in the sulfur dioxide emission rate of Mayon Volcano in Albay province in the Bicol region.

In its latest update, the Philppine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the volcano emitted 853 tons of SO2 in the past 24 hours.

Phivolcs recorded only 505 tons last October 10; 761 tons last October 8, and 350 tons last October 7.

While the volcano’s steaming activity remained moderate and while the crater glow remained obscure, Phivolcs said that they detected seven volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours – bringing to 43 the number of volcanic earthquakes recorded from October 5 to 11.

Mayon Volcano’s status, however, remained at Alert Level 2, which is characterized as "a state of unrest which could lead to more ash explosion or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruption."

Phivolcs said the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast flank are off-limits due to the threat of sudden explosions and rock falls from the upper slope.

"Active river channels and those areas perennially identified as lahar prone in the southeast sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather condition or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall," Phivolcs added.

Last July 10, the agency raised the alert at Mayon from Level 1 to Level 2 after noting a “moderate unrest."

Alert Level 1 means there is low-level unrest with slight increase in seismicity. There is also a "slight increase in sulfur dioxide gas output above the background level. A very faint glow at the crater may occur, but no conclusive evidence of magma ascent." At this level, no eruption is imminent, Phivolcs said.

Mayon spews high gas volume

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—Mayon Volcano released 1,272 tons of sulfur dioxide during a 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday morning that was way above the fluctuation range recorded in previous weeks, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Thursday

The emission was the highest during the last two-month observation period, a Phivolcs bulletin said, adding it was not able to record the gas level during the Wednesday-Thursday monitoring period due to bad weather.

The gas emission and other signs of abnormality shown by the volcano prompted disaster authorities to strictly enforce a ban on people entering designated danger zones around the volcano. Police and military personnel manned 12 checkpoints intended to ensure no one ventured into the "no-man’s land" in the municipalities of Camalig, Daraga, and Sto. Domingo, and the cities of Ligao, Tabaco and Legazpi.

Colonel Marlou Salazar, commander of the Army's 901st Infantry Brigade, said earlier that the Task Force Mayon had prepositioned military trucks in case an evacuation order is given by Governor Joey Salceda, Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council chair, in the event Philvolcs raised the alert to Level 3.

Gas emission trends from Mayon's crater showed a high level of unrest with 971 tons per day on October 12, 853 tons on October 11, and 505 tons on October 10, all were above the baseline data of 500 tons per day.

Thursday's bulletin also revealed an increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes by 11. It said there were 17 quakes during the past 24-hour period, compared to the six quakes in the previous monitoring period, bringing the total to 73 quakes recorded since October 5.

Scientists said the volcano's abnormality levels were an indication of a possible eruption.

They were continuously monitoring tremors, gas emissions and ground deformation as these are indications that the volcano's seismic activity may intensify.

Grater glow was not visible as the volcano was covered by clouds.

Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over the volcano and Phivolcs strongly recommended that the six-kilometer permanent danger zone and the seven-kilometer extended danger zone continue to be off-limits due to the threat from sudden explosions and rockfalls from the upper slopes of the volcano.

Mayon Volcano, famous for its nearly perfect conical shape, has a height of over 2,400 meters.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an ash explosion in Mayon Volcano early Wednesday, which caused ash fall in Albay towns located southwest and northwest of the volcano. "The explosion, which occurred at around 1:58 a.m., is a clear sign of magma intrusion toward the summit crater of the volcano," said Alex Baloloy, Phivolcs science research analyst. The explosion, which lasted for about three minutes, was accompanied by rumbling sounds.


Residents in the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, Polangui, Oas, and Ligao City reported experiencing the ash fall. Baloloy said, however, that the height of the ash column was not recorded because clouds covered the view of the volcano and it was still dark when the explosion happened. He added that because of the prevailing northeast monsoon, the ash fall drifted toward the southwest and northwest towns of the volcano.


Another ash emission was recorded at around 7:02 a.m. with ashes as high as 300 meters from the crater drifting in the same direction of the first ash explosion early morning. Mayon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2, meaning a state of increasing unrest of magmatic origin which may eventually lead to eruption. "The volcano has exhibited already two ash explosions since early morning today and it is possible that more explosions and even slight to stronger explosions could occur anytime.


That is why we are closely monitoring the volcano," Baloloy said. Albay Governor Joey Salceda immediately alerted the disaster officials through the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office to reiterate the strict observance of the six-kilometer permanent danger zones around the volcano; and the seven-kilometer extended danger zone in the southeast quadrant of the volcano. The 2,462-meter-tall volcano 300 kilometers southeast of Manila first spewed ash this year in three successive events last September 15. Another smaller single ash explosion was also recorded by the Phivolcs last October 28 and the latest early Wednesday morning which is already characterized by ash fall.

Tens of thousands of villagers in the Philippines fled their homes on Tuesday as one of the nation's most active volcanoes spewed lava and sent ash plumes high into the sky, authorities said. Soldiers and police marshalled the evacuation from the so-called "danger zone" around the foothills of Mayon volcano, amid concerns a big eruption could occur at any moment.


"After the series of ash puffs and ash explosions of 1,000 metres (high), we cannot rule out a major explosion," Cedric Daep, the head of the disaster relief operations in the region, told reporters. Daep said the authorities aimed to evacuate nearly 50,000 people from villages within eight kilometres (five miles) of the volcano by Thursday. Albay provincial governor Joey Salceda said that nearly 21,000 people had been evacuated by nightfall on Tuesday. "Zero casualties is still the goal of our province," he told the ABS-CBN network, explaining the huge evacuation well before any eruption.


Some of the residents of the farming villages were carried out on military trucks, while others walked out carrying boxes of belongings on their heads. Salceda said he wanted a "state of imminent disaster" to be declared over the province so special disaster funds could be released to help pay for the evacuation. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Mayon to three on Monday after lava was seen spewing from the crater, and evacuations began immediately. Level three means an eruption is likely in the very near future. The scale runs from one to five, with five meaning an eruption is occurring.


However the volcanology institute also said Mayon could yet calm down without an eruption. Mayon, which sits above a farming area about 330 kilometres (200 miles) southeast of Manila, has erupted 48 times since records began, claiming thousands of lives. In 1814, more than 1,200 people were killed as the lava buried the town of Cagsawa. However the 2,460-metre (8,070-feet) volcano remains a popular tourist attraction, and is famous for its perfect cone. The Philippines is part of the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" that is known for its volcanic activity. The Philippine volcanology institute lists 22 active volcanoes in the country.

Authorities moved thousands of villagers from harm's way near the Philippines' most active volcano Tuesday after it oozed lava and shot plumes of ash, and said they probably will spend a bleak Christmas in an evacuation center. State volcanologists raised the alert level on the cone-shaped, 8,070-foot (2,460-meter) Mayon volcano overnight to two steps below eruption after ash explosions and dark orange lava fragments glowing in the dark trickled down the mountain slope.


Nearly 50,000 people live in a five-mile (eight-kilometer) radius around the mountain, and authorities began moving thousands of them in case it erupts, Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda said. The first of 20 vehicles, including army trucks, were sent to villages to take residents to schools and other temporary housing, provincial emergency management official Jukes Nunez said. "It's 10 days before Christmas. Most likely people will be in evacuation centers, and if Mayon's activity won't ease down we will not allow them to return to their homes," Nunez said. "It's difficult and sad, especially for children." Magma had been rising at the volcano over the past two weeks and began to ooze out of its crater Monday night, but it could get worse in coming days, said Renato Solidum, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.


"Now lava is trickling down, but if the ascent of magma is sustained there will be laval flows," Solidum told The Associated Press. "There is also the possibility of an explosion." Residents in the central province of Albay are used to moving away from Mayon, which spewed ash last month and prompted the evacuation of some villages. About 30,000 people were moved when it last erupted in 2006. Typhoon-triggered mudslides near the mountain later that year buried entire villages, killing more than 1,000 people. Mayon's most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and buried a town in mud. A 1993 eruption killed 79 people. The Philippines lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. About 22 out of 37 volcanos in the archipelago are active.

On Tuesday The Philippines evacuated around 20,000 people from the slopes of Mt. Mayon, one of the country's deadliest volcanoes, as plumes of ash exploded skyward and lava oozed down its upper slopes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ordered everyone out of a six-kilometer (3.7 mile) radius around the volcano, as some as far away as to seven kilometers on the south side of the volcano have been told to evacuate. The institute judged a devastating eruption to be imminent.


Mayon is a stratovolcano, the cone-shaped variety that are both the most beautiful and often the most deadly. Mt. Fuji in Japan is a stratovolcano. So is Mt. Kilamanjaro in Tanzania, just over the Kenyan border. More ominously so is Mt. Pinatubo, like Mayon on the Philippines main island of Luzon. In June 1991, Pinatubo erupted in fury, the second largest eruption recorded in the 20th century. Weeks of preparation had seen 60,000 people evacuated from the surrounding area before the eruption, but it still claimed about 800 lives, mostly due to houses collapsing under the weight of accumulated ash. The Pinatubo eruption had more explosive force than the nuclear bombs the US dropped on Japan at the end of WWII. It pumped millions of tons of ash and sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere which, among other things, led to an average drop in global surface temperatures of about 1 degree F over the next year.


Similar preparations like those taken in advance of Pinatubo's eruption are being made in the event of an eruption by Mayon, including more evacuations if necessary and intense monitoring by volcanologists. Such measures have yielded dividends across the world since the early 20th century, when little was understood about the timing of eruptions and notification systems in the most at risk places - the vast majority of them the volcanically formed islands of the Pacific like those that dominate The Philippines and Indonesia. The 1886 eruption of Mt. Krakatoa, a tiny island between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, by contrast claimed at least 30,000 lives.


To be sure, Mt. Mayon has been recently deadly. Mudslides formed of the loose ash on its slopes killed about 1,000 people in 2006. The eruptions in the Philippines and surrounding locations are dangerous, but they are also givers of life. The lava flows creeping down the slopes and falls of ash so great they can bury whole towns. But, over the long term, that activity brings minerals to the surface that creates rich soils that allow for intensive cultivation. That has led to millions living in the shadows of volcanoes, like the residents around Mayon, which lies about 14 kilometers (9 miles) north of Legazpi City, which in turn is home to 150,00 people.


The Associated Press reported that over 50,000 people live within a five-mile radius of the volcano. About three-quarters of the world's active volcanoes are part of the Pacific ring of fire, a horseshoe-shaped area of intense seismic and tectonic activity that runs from New Zealand in the southwest, up along the coast of the Asian mainland and down the west coast of North and South America as far as southern Chile.

Mayon Volcano experienced a minor eruption Wednesday, spewing ash reaching up to 500 meters, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. In a telephone interview, Phivolcs Science Research Specialist Paul Alanis said that the minor eruption was recorded at around 10:16 a.m. At least 78 volcanic earthquakes were also recorded in the last 24 hours, Alanis said. Volcanic earthquakes are normal with the Mayon Volcano even when there is no alert level raised but only five minor quakes are recorded on the average, Alanis said.


"Ibig sabihin, talagang active ang bulkan ngayon [This means that the volcano is really active]," Alanis said. Alert level 3 remains over Albay province, but Phivolcs may raise it to alert level 5 depending on volcanic activities like increased siesmic activity, increased emissions of sulfur dioxide, swelling of the volcano and other physical manifestations indicating a bigger eruption, Alanis said.



He added that if Mayon continues to emit lava and pyroclastic material, it was possible within the next few weeks that the volcano may have a hazardous eruption similar to the explosions in 1993, 2001, and 2006. If a bigger eruption will occur, pyroclastic material may most likely flow down the volcano’s southeast side headed towards the general direction of Legazpi City. Meanwhile, Phivolcs has recommended the evacuation of residents of municipalities and towns near the volcano.

Report by Government of the Philippines:

I. SITUATION OVERVIEW

At 8:00 PM, 14 December 2009, PHIVOLCS- DOST raised the alert level of Mayon Volcano from ALERT LEVEL 2 to ALERT LEVEL 3 which means that magma is close to the crater and hazardous explosive eruption is imminent

Observations:

- After the 7:04 AM minor explosion, five (5) more minor ash explosions occurred at the summit crater of Mayon Volcano. Those explosions produced brownish to grayish ash clouds which were blown by strong winds towards the west-southwest and west-northwest which lasted for about three (3) minutes and were reflected as Explosion type quakes.
- Twenty three (23) volcanic quakes were also recorded from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM 14 December 2009.
- At 6:00 PM, 14 December 2009, incandescent materials originating from the summit crater was seen rolling downslope to about 3 km towards the direction of Bonga, Buyuan and Mabinit channels.

Recommendations

At Alert Level 3, PHIVOLCS strongly recommends that the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast flank of the volcano should be free from human activity because of sudden explosions that may generate hazardous volcanic flows.
- In addition, areas in the southeast that are outside the 7-km danger zone but within the 8 kilometers of the crater should be extra alert for increased volcanic activity.

II. PREPAREDNESS MEASURES

In view of the foregoing PDCC Albay orders the following measures:

- Mandatory evacuation of households in all areas within the 6 PDZ and the 6-km to 8-km EDZ up to the 8 km Extended High Risk Zone in the Southeast Quadrant particularly Buyuan, Mabinit and Bonga areas
- A total of 2,698 families/12,415 persons have been evacuated to the designated evacuation centers (TAB A)
- All Municipalities/City and Barangay DCCs around Mayon Volcano were advised to immediately convene, activate emergency operation and to execute evacuation procedures as ordered.
- Households in BDCCs likely to be affected were advised to prepare emergency provisions like clothing, basic utensils and beddings.
- Joint AFP-PNP Task Force Mayon (JTFM) will assist in the evacuation of the population and will strictly enforce checkpoints at strategic areas to ensure that nobody enters the Danger Zone at any time
- Suspension of classes in all schools within the 8 km radius of Mayon and school authorities are advised to devise scheduling and shifting strategies that would enable pupils regularly using these evacuation classrooms to revert to regular classes as soon as possible and for evacuee pupils to hold classes within the premises of the evacuation school. This is to minimize disruption in classes particularly given that evacuation period for Mayon eruption last between 42 to 87 days
- All PDCC member agencies to execute respective contingency plans and assist those populations who will be evacuated
- BRTTH, Provincial Hospitals of PHO and the CHOs and RHUs within the Mayon area are put on Code Blue alert. PHO to closely coordinate with DOH and BRTTH in preparations for the health requirements particularly WATSAN in the evacuation centers
- AHEM to assign its paramedic units in assisting LGUs and barangays in the evacuation procedures to be undertaken
- PSWDO to immediately ensure the availability of necessary basic needs in the identified evacuation centers and to continue repacking of food items to be distributed immediately to evacuees
- PNP together with the Barangay Tanods to ensure the security of the houses to be vacated during evacuation
- Residents, motorists and school children to protect themselves for possible ash inhalation by covering their nose with damped cloth or handkerchief to prevent health problems
