Will wonders never cease? Health insurance update

After all the appointments at health services, the denials, and the worrying, I got a letter in the mail today.

"You now have TennCare Medicaid. You do NOT have to pay for your TennCare Medicare, your health care or your medicine."

Yippee!! Michael has health insurance now, and the battery for the pacemaker is no longer an issue. Even better, he can start getting therapy again. EVEN BETTER! The insurance coverage started three days before the $1300 outstanding cardiologist bill. Hehehe, there is a goddess about!!!

Now, for the black lining that accompanies every silver cloud, lol! They ALSO included my two normal, healthy kids that already have health insurance. Do you realize what a bureaucratic nightmare it´s going to be in order to get the two healthy kids off this free insurance?

So I have a moral dilemma. Should I quietly cancel the paid for insurance, and milk the system? Or hold my head high as I normally do and pay my way? Why does the right decision involve the one with me spending inordinate amounts of time copying insurance papers and talking to government employees on the phone???

What great news! I was just wondering about you and your son, too. Glad to hear some good news. As for milking the system, I know it´s tempting but if your other kids don´t qualify, don´t risk it. I don´t know the US health system anymore, so you know what´s best. Ah heck, nevermind the advice...Congratulations that all your hard work paid off!

For what it´s worth, here is what I would do in your situation. There must be contact information in the letter. Call them up, not on Monday morning when people are often stressed, writing down the date, time, and who you talk with, tell them that you have two healthy kids included in the coverage with one special needs kid, ask them if this is the regular procedure.

If they say yes, thank them and hang up. If they say no, let them fix it. Don´t volunteer any information other than that all your kids are included in the coverage. Be truthful if they ask you questions.

If all your kids are covered, look on it as help for your whole family, which is the reality of the situation anyway. If one person in a family needs extra help, it takes away from the rest. This may help balance things out.

And if all your kids are covered, you don´t HAVE to use the coverage if you have other means. But if you do drop other coverage you can use the money saved for the benefit of your kids. And who knows what setbacks the future might bring.

As long as you bring up the matter for clarification, you aren´t scamming anyone. You may well be correct that it would be easier for everyone involved to leave it like it is. If it turns out that way, be grateful for the gift and be glad you live somewhere that help is available.

I wouldn´t worry about the other kids, if they qualify then go with it if you are comfortable with the doctors and care they will receive. Maybe you can keep the other insurance and bill Tenncare as primary, and the other as the secondary---or however it works.

I would inquire if you are worried about anything...since you are getting the care you needed that seemed almost unobtainable in the recent past---I wouldn´t risk blowing that somehow!?!?!

edit: I would do exactly what Natch said!

Soakingood -- That´s good news! We´re all glad for you. As to the duplicate insurance thing -- I´d contact both insurers and just lay it all out and ask what to do. You can´t go wrong by being honest -- but you can get in a real jam skirting the edges, if ya know what I mean.

Yes, Natch gives good advice. I´ve already made the call. They want it in writing, lol!

The good news gets better, though. I´ve been in contact with an agency here in town that specializes in autism. They´ve found a volunteer to work an intensive behavioral program for him!!!! I met her today, and her and Michael got along well. Everything this organization does is free. The universe is simply AMAZING!

All this good news makes me feel even sillier about my recent "meltdown". Just goes to show how much we can work ourselves up for no good reason.

Soakinggood that´s great news! My mom is on Tenncare and she´s grateful to have it and glad that Tennessee has such a program for those who need it. I thought if you qualified financially all children were to be covered but I´m not sure. Do what the poster earlier said, call em up and ask just to make sure.
