Anone do movie extra work?
Quote

Times are hard.Robert Redford is producing a movie here in Savannah and the word is out they are looking for a sizable number of slim, bearded guys for extras.(Civil war scenes) Anyone have an experience with this type of work? Project supposedly to last about 2 months. Is it worth the time?

If they give you a line, even a single word, then they have to pay you union scale, which I believe is pretty good pay. If you're just a body in the background, you'll make something close to minimum wage. So it depends on what else you have going on.

On the other hand, how many chances do you get to be in a Robert Redford movie?

I was in the latest "Rocky" filmed here in Vegas and after 4 boring hours and a stale donut (sitting next to Mannequins that "filled" up all of the remaining seats) I got the hell OUT of there.

NOT worth it! And no, we weren't paid. I was just bored- or so I thought. Now I know that bored is much worse than I ever dreamed.

I was a Louisiana Senator in Ray for the closing scene filmed in Baton Rouge that was in Georgia in the film.

It's fun and pays well for doing little but lots of waiting.

If you have the time go for it!

God Bless and good look. We started early and stayed late.

I don't know what happened here?

We signed in and was on the clock from the moment I got there.

But I agree about the standing around. 99% of what we did was standing around and waiting.

It is incredibly boring TONS of sitting on your ass for four seconds of action. See what they're paying a day, it used to be like 70 bucks more or less. If you so much as open your mouth for a line, sure they will pay you union scale, but you will also have to join SAG, and that is not cheap. Do not accept any spoken bits unless you are willing to join SAG...(there goes all your wages). I've done it..boring, very very boring, however not mentally challenging (just do what the director tells you to, and when he tells you to do it). If you dont have anything else to do, put a book on your iPod and go for it!

The SAG thing may vary by state. I knew a guy in Texas who had a line and got paid scale without joining the union, but Texas has some fairly anti-union laws. Just sayin'.

SAG will give you one free-be. I think they call it a Taft Hartley if I remember correctly. It is probably around 1000$ to join and you have to pay dues.

Being just an extra can suck. Make sure you know what you are getting into. Most the time it is about 50 dollars a day.

Re: Anone do movie extra work?Quote

Want a funny story about being an "extra"?

About 1990 I lived in the French Qtr in New Orleans. I worked for a well-known hotel. Next door was another really NICE hotel and this college kid worked the same hours I did.

One night he told me he had applied to be an extra for a movie being shot that weekend because he could use the extra $50 bucks.

Several months later I bumped into him and asked how it went.

He said, "Well, it was pretty boring but they DID pay me the $50".

I asked what he did.

He said they costumed him in a long trench coat and made him carry a semi gun up a flight of stairs. His entire "scene" took 15 minutes, at most.

They never showed his head- just the long, trench-coat body walking up the stairs.

Turns out it was the climactic scene in "Millers Crossing" when the "Danny Boy" song plays and the house bursts into flames.

I just love that story.

If you liked that story I have another one but don't feel like typing it if it's not worth reading.

I lived down there when they filmed JFK and some other weirdo movie.

OK, well as I said, I lived in the QTR back then.
I lived right off Bourbon and St Anne and my BF lived off Dumaine and Royal.

He was a professional entertainer at a hotel on B Street but lived a fairly conservative life.

One day as he was coming home from work he walked a different route in order to stop by the dry cleaners and pick up some clothes he had dropped off.

As he approached the intersection to his apartment complex a woman ran up to him and said, "We've been waiting for you!!!!!!"

He was a bit startled and asked, WHY?

She said, "You ARE the lover of (so-and-so)aren't you? Can't remember but I think it was Sharon Stone or that woman who played across Nick Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas".

He's like, "WHAT?!"

"I'm just wanting to get into that door right there to go home!"

So now it's about 4 pm and his ritual was to take a nap before heading out for work at 9 PM.

About 6 PM he was awakened by gunfire. He ran to his balcony (which was about 3 floors over the action taking place in the building across the street).

And looking down he saw Stone or what's her name with the "lover" during a murder scene- camera's rolling.

They had mistaken him for some "lover guy".

When they filmed JFK I remember Oliver Stone hung out alot around the Qtr but the funniest thing was one spring day when I was walking to work along Royal Street there were all of these blown-up Santa Claus, Snowmen, etc. surrounding the courthouse. I thought, "What the HELL????"

It was only after I watched JFK that I understood the scene that had taken place in "December".

I guess what I'm trying to say is that these things can provide interesting moments in your life if you don't have anything better to do.

ICE, how come we never got paid for Rocky??????????
Did you ever get a check?

I remember I was so bored at one point during a long break that I started "making out" with my mannequin companion- just to stay sane.

All I was doing was kissing him on his blown-up, rubber cheeks and fondling his rubber arm but I'll tell you what.... I had some costume designer attack me within SECONDS as though I could have made that idiot blow-up-doll look any worse.

So if you really want to do this, I'd get it in writing that you'll be paid and DON'T mess with the MANNEQUINS!

Looking back I wish I'd stolen one on my way out. THAT would have been worth the experience.
