'Free-for-all' riot reported at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach; 100 involved, 3 injured
By Ludmilla Lelis

Orlando Sentinel

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH — More than 100 people were involved in a disturbance — TV stations called it a riot — at Bethune-Cookman University after a sprinkler went off in a dormitory around 11 a.m., sparking an evacuation at the Daytona Beach campus.

One unidentified person was arrested after he threw a chair out of a window at the Oswald P. Bronson Hall, a three-story freshmen male dormitory named after a former university president.

The extent of the injuries was unclear, with some TV stations reporting as many as three people sustaining such injuries as cuts and bruises and breathing problems and eye irritations caused by fire-extinguisher gas.

A spokesman for the EVAC ambulance company, which responded to the university, told the Orlando Sentinel no one was transported.

The Daytona Beach News Journal is reporting the sprinklers went off when someone hung a shirt on a sprinkler head.

A police officer told the Orlando Sentinel about 100 to 150 people were involved.

People got upset after the sprinkler went off and everything got wet, the officer said.

The chair went out the window. Then a fight broke out after a fire extinguisher went off in the dorm, the officer said.

The Associated Press is reporting the disturbance started when students tried to return to the dorm but were prevented because of safety concerns.

The university's Web site said the Oswald P. Bronson Hall has 71 rooms and an occupancy of 276.

Each room can accommodate up to four people, the university's Web site said.

WFTV said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood described what happened as a "free for all."

The station said students, staff and people from surrounding neighborhoods were involved.

The station said Chitwood said he sent every available officer to the campus to break up the fight. It also said every available security guard was used.

Daytona Beach police have not returned a call from the Sentinel seeking information.

An officer told the Sentinel the brawl started before 11 a.m. It was all over before 2 p.m., an officer said.

A university spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel earlier today she didn't have any information to release
