I just noticed this when I checked on recent eq activity ... that would explain all those restless animals in Central CA people were reporting on another thread yesterday!

For sure.

The only thing really up there, besides Mammoth ski and recreation area, is a big ass supervolcano. The fault lines may or may not add to anything, but if this sucker should blow, and it, like yellowstone, is overdue, it would take out a good portion of california, Arizona, and Nevada

Re: Swarm of EQ's near Long Valley Caldera (supervolcano)Quote

Long Valley Caldera is a depression in eastern California that is adjacent to Mammoth Mountain. The valley is one of the largest calderas on earth, measuring about 20 miles (32 km) long (east-west) and 11 miles (18 km) wide (north-south). The elevation of the floor of the caldera is 6,500 feet (2,000 m) in the east and 8,500 feet (2,600 m) in the west. The elevation of the caldera walls reach 9,800-11,500 feet (3,000-3,500 m) except in the east where the wall rises only 500 feet (150 m) to an elevation of 7,550 feet (2,300 m).

Long Valley was formed 760,000 years ago when a huge volcanic eruption released very hot ash that later cooled to form the Bishop tuff that is common to the area. The eruption was so colossal that the magma chamber under the now destroyed volcano was significantly emptied to the point of collapse. The collapse itself caused an even larger secondary eruption of pyroclastic ash that burned and buried thousands of square miles. Ash from this eruption blanketed much of the western part of what is now the United States. Geologists call topographic depressions formed in this manner calderas.

"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

I keep thinking of Cassandra's doom in the central valley, which is not very prone to EQ's, close to the Sierra's. But she had always said it would happen in Modesto.

Long Valley Caldera Info
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 785105

From what I've read, this type of "swarm" volcanic activity has been noticed since 1980. I find it interesting though that this began after the deep sea quakes recently. Could the caldera be loosened?

Interesting. I was talking to a buddy about the webbot stuff, so it's on my mind. A supervolcanic eruption would kill countless people, the ash would probably qualify as "ill wind", it would cause a global coastal event, and energy prices would skyrocket due to the long term cold, crops would suffer and it would probably hasten the collapse of the dollar.

In short, this particular flavor of doom would fit a lot of the webbot's predictions.

Like I said earlier, there was a swarm up there a few years ago, but nothing with bigger quakes like the last few days. This is unusual, as I check up there any time there is significant quake activity in the pacific or the west coast. I wanna know when to get out of dodge, if that's even possible.
