I think it is working better so far. I have been online for less than an hour though.

The USGS monitors springs, streams, wells, fumaroles, and precipitation in Long Valley to study the natural hydrologic variations and the response of the hydrologic system to volcanic and tectonic processes. The locations of all monitoring sites are shown below. Hydrologic data from key monitoring sites are posted every day allowing us to quickly review recent data for real or (faulty) equipment induced anomolies.

The thread has mentioned all kinds of potential doom. If you want to work yourself up and others go ahead but don't over do it. Again...check the statistics.
Project your own views all you want, I think we've made it quite clear that this thread is simply to follow what's been happening. You want to read doom and gloom into it, fine. While you do that, though, you've been treading all over others offering such terrible advice as "be prepared" and plan ahead. Wrong person dude. Check your facts. You should be able to do that since all the info you need is in the thread.
Trash all you want, I think you'll find most of us ignoring your rash generalizations. Even more simply, if you don't approve of the thread's subject matter, find another thread to be a part of, rather than flaunting your trollness with silly things like "Move along, nothing to see here". Clearly, if you were actually qualified to make such a statement, you would have reviewed the material and come to the same conclusion as the rest of us, that being that this particular swarm and timing is curious, to say the least. Of course, if you had bothered to read any of the thread before you joined in, you'd know we already covered all of that in detail. Could you please post your qualifications?
Earthquakes come and go, they follow bell curve patterns, fine. We ALL get that. While the past can help as an effective indicator, it cannot effectively predict the future, especially where mother nature"mother nature" is that a technical term you learned in eartquake school? is concerned. That will always be a crapshoot, and the best we can hope to do is watch for the signs and be prepared. Any Californian knows this, it has nothing to do with GLP or doom. But keep projecting your own issues, don't let me stop you! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 538386
Sorry if by requesting that you read the USGS statment where they say that there are many reasons for increased seismic activity including more seizmographs has ruined your day but I was just adding a different perspective to the dicussion. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 786167 10/4/2009 1:00 PM | | Re: Swarm of EQ's near Long Valley Caldera (supervolcano) | Quote | since i live on a narrow peninsula on the ocean in northern ca i decided it would be beneficial to find a way to be alerted of big earthquakes. so i did a search and found this service that sends you an sms if a earthquake happens in the bay area: [link to alertsf.org]
i can't find anything for northern ca. if anyone knows of anything i'd appreciate. i found one that sends emails, better than nothing, but it doesn't seem to be functional. thanks.
p.s. nothing seems out of the ordinary here to me. haven't felt any shaking at all. |

What's very interesting is the two Super volcanoes/calderas in the U.S., Yellowstone Lake - eq swarm from the end of December 08- end of Jan. (at least over 1,000 eq's).
Now Long Valley's eq swarm and geologists know both of these super volcanoes could erupt it's only a matter of when.
And both of these eq swarms have been reported on the main news media. |

will send an email based on your predefined settings. you can use the email version of your cell phone and it will come as an sms. if you have gmail you could also just have it come into your gmail and then create a filter to have emails coming from usgs forwarded to your cell phone email address. i set it for eqs' 6 and above. not sure how wide a geographic boundary around me to set it for but took a guess. will see if it works. |
