Re: Questions about a 3 week old kittenQuote

A friend of mines daughter found a little kitten
and he wouldnt let her keep it. So I took him in.
He was about 3 or four weeks old. I didn't know what to
feed it so I bought canned cat food and mixed it with milk
and heated it. He ate it and my neice told me how to make him use the bathroom rubbing his rear end with a warm wet paper towel. Now two years later I have a huge 15 pound spoiled rotten cat. Can't help but love him though. He's kick back in the other chair right now sleeping on his back
with all four feet in the air.
Good Luck to you and you new friend. hf hf hf

You are so sweet for taking him in...I believe someone else mentioned the cat milk with moist food...something to think about...but I do think I will bottle feed him for at least a week more or less...idk we will see how he does with the saucer after a little bit. The last cat I had died when I lived in FL...she was 13 years old...and just my baby...her name was Callie...calico cat...the coolest....I miss her...and I said I would wait a long time before I got another one again....but hey...hes here for a reason...and now hes home. Thanks for your post AC

Re: Questions about a 3 week old kittenQuote

Hey guys...I was wondering if anyone has ever taken care of a 3 week old kitten?

A friend found this little angel who was abandoned by his mother and started to bottle feed him but she works full time and did not have the time to spend with this kitten. So I took him home...I have been bottle feeding him for 3 days now...and..I am soo tired! Its like having a baby again! lol Anyway...he eats every 3 hours...is this normal? Should I increase to every 4 hours? Also I thought you could put a kitten on kitten food at 4 weeks old...is this correct as well...should I start out with moist food? I am not used to having such a young kitten so this is new to me.

Any tips you guys can give me on caring for this little guy will be greatly appreciated!

I just rescued two at 4 weeks...at first they need milk replacement..found at Petsmart, Petco..then at 6 weeks you can switch them to 2nd step weaning food..no kitten food till about 7 weeks..and then soaked in the 2nd step weaning food till very soft..
I start the kittens on 2nd step as the directions indicate, making a soft semi thick gruel..then gradually making it more and more moist till it's the consistency of milk..at 7 weeks I start with small quantities of moist kitten chow, soaked in the 2nd step formula...
On the potty training they are too young to use a box..their mother licks them there to clean them and stimulate pee..but they are like human babies and diapers..they just pee..after the first baby chow they will have their first bowel movement..they get very upset at this..and then learn quite fast to use a paper..then later switch to kitty litter..they are too young to know to hold themselves up out of the litter so it sticks to their bottoms...cleaning them with soft warm wet towels helps keep them clean at this age, and bonding also occurs with you...
Be sure to provide a small dish of fresh water for them..the mother's milk provides their water till they are 6 weeks old..weaning time...so show the baby the water too..
often it takes a little finger dipped in the new milk to get them to drink from a dish..they will suck the milk gruel off of your finger..then gradually guide them down to the dish..laughing they usually eat the side of the dish first..then they find the gruel milk mix...also they are not ready for hard food till they are 3 months old, and then only gradually switching from soft to gradually harder..till they nibble on the dry kitten chow..they have baby teeth that can break..

Also every 3 hours is the feeding schedule..every 4 hours will make them dehydrated and weak..if they do get diarrhea, whip up a little raw egg, and give them a little at a time..often they will start to eat it, and it heals them completely..all these tips came from rescuers who like me have brought many back from near death with egg and such efforts..it works..it takes extreme patience though..
Good luck with the baby..you are a kind soul..

Thank you so much River! Excellent advice...I can tell I will be coming back to this thread a lot over the next few weeks. I am learning so much from all of you guys. I have had a kitten but never this young...it is an experience lol
Have a great night River...

hes soo sweet!!

i think youre doing an amazing job!

dont forget tho cats are nocturnal by nature so this is why he sleeps better during the day. he must have been very hungry and scared before you found him, i guess it would take some time for him to catch up with feeds and adjust to his trauma. he will get less demanding, i promise!

good luck with him, batman is a great name for him!

Re: Questions about a 3 week old kittenQuote

I had several kittens to take care of after the mother cat died 2 days after the birth.

I fed them with little bottles. I also used KMR. I got a box with a cover to put them in and I took them everywhere with me. I fed them whenever they were hungry which was all the time.

I didn't get much sleep for several weeks. Offer canned kitten food at 4 weeks, they will start eating it eventually. You can start offering dry kitten food at about 6 weeks.

I found homes for all of them and since then I've never let one of my cats have any more kittens. Lesson learned. catdance

oh yes...I had to get used to feeding such a tiny creature with that bottle...but hes doing very well with it...and I know what you mean AC...this is day 3 with hardly any sleep...I am up every 3 hours...but ya know... it is well worth it...thanks for your post

hf

My sons were young when I raised these kittens. They are now adults and tell me that raising the kittens was one of the best memories they have of growing up.

My boys used to have "kitten training camp" where they taught the kittens to run and jump on little pieces of foam rubber. Kind of like little course they set up to teach the kittens. At the end of the course, my boys had a clean litter box where they taught the kittens to go potty. My boys would set the kitten in the litter box, get their little paws and reach them to dig a little hole, then they would turn them around and show them that is where they were supposed to pee and poo. Then they would get their little paws again and show them how to cover it up.

All of my sons still love cats (and dogs) to this day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 765377

Oh yes speaking of kids...my son and his friend are over right now...just luvin on the cat...its adorable. Kitten training camp...your sons are very creative to think of that! That is really cool...lol I show my kitten every time what to do in the litter box but I think he is still too young...maybe in a few more days he will catch on better. Thanks AC!

Love those little kittens. Let it eat as much as it wants.

One question - Can he go to potty by himself? If not, you will have to bathroom him.

One other thing - You don't have to feed him at night.

well...I have been taking a wet wash cloth and after every time I feed him...I dab his little pee pee.. and put him in the litter box...I figured this is how I should do it since the mom usually licks them to go pee...I hope this is correct...he has not gone in the litter box as of yet...he is so tiny he has no clue what to do in there...any suggestions as to what else I can do regarding the litter box?

I did not know I didn't have to feed him at night...why not? He wakes up every 3 hours and cries until I feed him...so I figure he is hungry....

hf

Know this sounds gross but you also need to bathroom his poopie place also. LOL

If he cries a lot he may be crying because he is uncomfortable. Needs to poop.I have raised many little kitties and know how they act.

One suggestion about the litter box - take his little front paws and dig a little in the litter box. Seems to help.

Yes I was thinking this...he went poop about 2 days ago and I am worried about that...because he has not gone since...any suggestions to help this? Sorry about all the questions AC...I just want to give this little guy the best care I can...thanks again

hf

Just keep trying to help him poop. I always use very damp tissue paper for my kittens.
It wont be long till he can use the litter box but Keep bath rooming him occasionally after he does.
It is very hard for them to get those little muscles to work properly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 786190

This is essential!
Two days is a long time for a kitten.
You must stimulate pooping by "cleaning" the anus, just like his mom would do. Little kittens cannot poop on their own.
You may be lucky with a belly massage, but this is not the way cats do it.
Sorry for the open words but it IS important to do it right.
AND it is urgent.

OP As this poster states, you need to help it go poo. The mama will lick the kitty and that will stimulate them to go. Because it doesn't have a mama, you will need to use a soft wet rag to wipe and stimulate the area.

Re: Questions about a 3 week old kittenQuote

Normal cat food will be a bit too hard for a 5-6 week old kitten.

Look for something called tender vittles. Its not as moist as canned food.

You want to avoid the canned food because the kitten will make a mess trying to eat it. The tender vittles are chewy and bite size.
 Quoting: Xare

Thanks for the tips honey...I was thinking about the tender vittles earlier...lol

Hey Winnie! thanks a lot honey. Yes I think you are right he is just getting adjusted to his new surroundings....I also found a old laundry basket...which is bigger than what I had him in and put in some nice soft blankets...I also found a bear which I had from when I had my son...that has the heartbeat sound...so I put that in there with him...he is sleeping peacefully now....and yeah he looks like a little bat in a way with his ears...lol
