Since I work with those who are disabled - and am personally involved in other things, I would say you cannot be too simplistic about what is going on.

You got a spirit/mind connected to a brain and a body. That goes for everyone. Sometimes the body and/or brain do not work quite right. Like in autism, retardation or mental illness, for instance. Or in people who are seriously addicted to substances. Or in people with Alzheimers and other dementias.

Sometimes the spirit of the self fully occupies the body. Sometimes the mind connection is still intact. Sometimes neither of those two aspects are the case: The spirit of the self does not fully occupy the body, or the mind does not quite connect correctly between spirit and form.

Fact is, whether you have a disability, are addicted, or are absent those incapacities the real question is this:

Are you fully occupying your form - or not. Do you have the Will to do so, are you determined to do so? If not, then, be sure that something else, some other entity, can and probably will occupy your form.

The Dustin Hoffman character, we cannot know about, lacking the real details and first-hand experience. An idiot savant does not have to be possessed to be an idiot savant. However, an idiot savant could be possessed. You just cannot stereotype or generalize, and remain credible.

HOWEVER, through an incapacity that prevents the spirit from fully occupying the form, then YES, possession could occur. Or, if, for whatever reason, you do not have the strength, Will and determination to control your self and your form, then, also YES, some entity could take you over and act through you.

I watched The Industry, too. While I do not necessarily agree in detail with all of his conclusions, I do consider The Industry "required reading" - for far more than just the music business. These days everyone bops around plugged into their Ipod: That is a pretty constant signal to have going into your brain and mind connection. What do you think that does to strength of spirit?

From time immemorial, chanting, sounds, tones, rythym, music - all mathematical and geometrical in nature and all, therefore, essentially "magical" - have been used to alter mindset and behavior. That can alter cultures. Do you think that in this modern age, it would be any different? Nope. Only now it can be done at a level never before exercised. God bless technology. Still, look at "Voodoo" that uses none of that and still can summon entities into a human form - a willing human form.

And, God bless scientific understanding, because now there are proper theories in Physics to help with the beginnings of explanations of how certain modalities of ceremonial magic might really be able to "open" portals for entities to enter this plane or dimension.

Of all the cool forms, sets, atmospheres, symbolic content that are available for musical settings and events, it is rather curious that, in the most successful groups and places, only a specific collection of such is used - over and over and over. Years on end.

Has anyone noticed how, over time the energy of the music and sets and costimes has become more urging, more inviting to expression of the baser instincts, uglier rather than beautiful (although Darkness can be very beautiful in its own right, even as its greatest pleasure is the pillage of what is beautiful in Light and Innocence)? Has anyone noticed how it has ramped up and is now contains far more "disturbia." Is it just a reflection of our times? Or is it like in the Voodoo ritual, when the ritual moves from invitation and seduction, to the phase of the ritual plea for climax, absorption, and complete change (flipping)of state?

Another question is this: Has this just come on and progressed with the advent of the technology to make it so? Or was it going on before? And, if so, how - what would be the evident symbolic markers?

The understanding of what or who Rainman is rather essential to mass survival, I think. It is not Dustin Hoffman's character. And that autistic character is certainly not who Eminem is referring to. Whoever or whatever Rainman is, it is not going to be content to toy with the easy-to-have souls of music groupies. Rainman wants something more and is growing impatient, methinks.
