A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Vanuatu, following three other major quakes nearby, but there was no widespread tsunami threat, the US Geological Survey and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
Three powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8, 7.7 and 7.3 struck near the South Pacific nation earlier today in the space of just over one hour.
A series of strong aftershocks rattled the region for hours after the series of tremors, which sparked a tsunami warning and sent thousands of Pacific islanders scurrying for shelter on high ground.
The first magnitude 7.8 quake sparked a region-wide tsunami alert and was quickly followed by the two other strong earthquakes, the US Geological Survey said.
The initial earthquake struck 295 kilometres north-west of Luganville on Vanuatu's Espiritu Santo island at a shallow depth of 35 kilometres at 9:03am (local time).
The latest one of 7.0 was reported nearby, 278 kilometres north-west of Luganville at a depth of 33 kilometres.
The earthquakes came after a tsunami devastated swathes of the region last week, killing 184 people mostly in Samoa.
I mentioned this in another thread but there were only 12 earthquakes last year that was in the 7.0 - 7.9 range. That's a total for the whole world. That one tiny area has had 3 in such a short time. That alone should suggest something extraordinary happening over there.

I mentioned this in another thread but there were only 12 earthquakes last year that was in the 7.0 - 7.9 range. That's a total for the whole world. That one tiny area has had 3 in such a short time. That alone should suggest something extraordinary happening over there.

The 6 range EQ dont concern me. There are usually 10-12 of those per month anyway.
The 7ers and up is another story.
There are on average 1-2 7.0-7.9 per month. 3 within an hour is strange and concerning. Add to that an 8Mg less than a month ago. 8+ EQs are 1-2 a year event.
Vanuatu keeps shaking small but steady. Prolly be another eruption there soon. Apology in advance for killin your thread.

There are an average of 1471 quakes of 5.0 or better each year. That's 122 per month.
There are an average of 150 quakes of 6.0 or better each year. That's still more than ten each month.
The world has an average of 18 quakes of 7.0 or better per year. So far in 2009 we have had 15 such quakes. We are right on schedule with the norm. Nothing to see here, folks.
