Vanuatu/Solomon Islands Earthquakes, 8th October 2009 - John Seach
Posted by John Seach
Listed below is a summary of the large and major earthquakes to hit the Vanuatu/Solomon Islands region today, 8th October 2009. Times are local.
Mag 6.1 8th October 2009 at 07:34 pm. 12.284°S, 166.568°E. Depth 35 km.
Mag 7.0 8th October 2009 at 07:28 pm. 13.298°S, 165.951°E. Depth 35 km.
Mag 6.6 8th October 2009 at 01:12 pm. 11.650°S, 166.170°E. Depth 35 km.
Mag 7.3 8th October 2009 at 10:13 am. 13.145°S, 166.297°E. Depth 33 km.
Mag 7.7 8th October 2009 at 09:18 am. 12.554°S, 166.320°E. Depth 35 km.
Mag 7.8 8th October 2009 at 09:03 am. 13.052°S, 166.187°E. Depth 35 km.
Earthquakes of this size can disrupt nearby volcanoes. Active Vanuatu volcanoes close to the epicentre are Suretamatai, Gaua, Ambae, Ambrym, and Lopevi. Tinakula volcano is located north in the Solomon Islands.
Volcanoes of Vanuatu...
I'm not sure if people truly realize the significance of how many 7.0+ earthquakes today alone.
I don't think the reality of this has sunk in deep enough yet.
We are quite probably facing the largest volcanic explosion/eruption in all of recorded history. On top of that, an Ice Age, Tsunami's for days, reduced sunlight and a Global Death Toll that would shock anyone into a delusional trance.

OP mentioned that he thought Tinakula would erupt, among other events. Here's a little info on Tinakula:
Tinakula
The small 3.5-km-wide island of Tinakula is the exposed summit of a massive stratovolcano that rises 3-4 km from the sea floor at the NW end of the Santa Cruz islands. Tinakula resembles Stromboli volcano in containing a breached summit crater that extends from the 851-m-high summit to below sea level. Landslides enlarged this scarp in 1965, creating an embayment on the NW coast. The satellitic cone of Mendana is located on the SE side. The dominantly andesitic Tinakula volcano has frequently been observed in eruption since the era of Spanish exploration began in 1595. In about 1840, an explosive eruption apparently produced pyroclastic flows that swept all sides of the island, killing its inhabitants. Frequent historical eruptions have originated from a cone constructed within the large breached crater. These have left the upper flanks of the volcano and the steep apron of lava flows and volcaniclastic debris within the breach unvegetated.

The recent two deep earthquakes near the Philippines are really alarming. Especially since the second one in the same location. The odds of these two quakes being seperate from each other are near zero. So, what is going on? Is there a large body of thick molten magma rising with the consitency of soft plastic? Could very well be just that as typical friction and tension quakes do not occur at that depth, not even close.
Today there was a 6.7 at 582.8 km deep. Same place as the 630.5 km quake on the 4th 3 days ago.
It is the same location. So lets figure this. If there is something happening and is coming towards the surface, it travelled exactly 630.5km to 582.8km with a difference of 47.7km. The dates were October 4th 2009 10:58UTC and October 7th 2009 21:45UTC with a difference of 82 hours and 47 minutes.
So far the travel speed is 0.576 Km/hr.
At this rate, the event might reach the surface in 1,011 hours or at about 42 days. The date is November 18th 2009.
It may be a few days ahead or a few days behind but if anything is travelling towards the surface, it would be catastrophic. Real Global Doom everyone.
I do not support craaazy GLP babble predictions as there are millions of them. But this date has facts behind it. I may be wrong, I'de rather be wrong but the details show us something deep and deadly rising.
UPDATED INFORMATION
There is a caldera in the general area where the series of deep tremors are. It is called Taal Caldera. There is a volcano in the lake but the lake itself is the caldera. So it is a volcano inside a volcano.
Taal's last major eruptions were between 50,000-100,000 years ago. Four caldera explosions during that time frame.
In June/July of 2009 the area has been put on Alert Level 1 due to increasing activity.
Professor Ray Cas of Monash University School of Geosciences stated Lake Toba is in threat of eruption after the massive Sumatra Earthquake that triggered the deadly tsunami.
Earthquakes above 7.0 Mag can hasten a caldera's explosion. Each quake above 7.0 makes the explosion sooner then later.
The series of deep quakes are indicative of renewed activity which is most likely associated with either Toba and/or Taal.
Either one erupted would kill everything with in 1,000km and produce a tsunami over 560m high. It would release about 1,000 cubic kilometers of ash and rock debris blocking sunlight globally.
Tobas last massive eruption left only 10,000 Homo Sapiens on the planet. Known as the genetic bottle neck in Africa. Quoting: ºCRAPº
Taal Volcano and the Lake are located far north from the vicinity of the two earthquakes of about two thousand kilometers or more.
Most probably it is the Mayon Volcano that is plausible for the effect and this volcano is active this time. Mayon Volcano is about one thousand kilometers from the area of the earthquake. |

We were the ones devastated by the recent typhoon.
Yeah, our village is totally reclaimed by mud.
And now we are homeless. And our new car too.
But my wife and kids survived.

So are you telling me I SHOULD EVACUATE my self and my family from the Philippines?
Where should I go where it is safe?
Stay where you are . there is nowhere to run. There is a Islamic prophesy which says that when the time comes, the man sitting is better than those standing and those standing is better than those running. We dont know which direction its going to take, so just stay where you are
I agree unless you have the means to travel to a new part of the world.
If you have the money why not make a good thing of it. Move a place in the world you always wanted to see, and that is relatively safe if that concerns you. There are plenty of beautiful and safe places one could settle down in. Do you have children? If so, DO NOT PANIC. It is not good for kids. Second, don't run in panic BUT with everything that is going on in the last few weeks as far as earthquakes and tsunamis are concerned, you ARE living in an elevated risk area. Let's not kid each other, it isn't safe right now. But that is life so we all must get used to it.
Do what you can do and don't discourage from what you can't do.

Yes, the Juan de Fuca subduction zone is very worrisome with the possibility of a 9+.
I recently read, maybe here but can't remember, that the seismologists now feel that if those plates go that it will reign more destruction on Seattle and Puget Sound than they had previously estimated.
It is a very similar subduction zone to Sumatra. |

That was my first impression as well.
Would tension between two techtonic plates cause a slow rolling quake?
It seems like the ground is shifting from a gas or liquid filling the soil below.
At this point, I would not be surprised if a violent explosion occurs.

According to geologists, it is these three volcanoes that are active and are in threat of eruption.
Marapi, Talang and Tandikat
Krakatau was a volcano very similar to those three before Krakatau blew sky high.
Merapi: Gunung Merapi translates as Mountain of Fire.
Image: [link to en.wikipedia.org]
Elevation: 2,968 m / 9,738 ft
Location: 7°32′26.99″S 110°26′41.34″E
Type: Stratovolcano
Info: Merapi has violently erupted in 1006, 1786, 1822, 1872 and 1930. Minor eruptions occur every 2-3 years. The eruption of 1006 was it's known largest and covered all of Central Java with ash and rock debris.
Talang: Talang has two lakes at it's base which are craters from previous explosions. Large volcano.
Image: [link to en.wikipedia.org]
Elevation: 2,597 m / 8,520 ft
Location: 0°58′42″S 100°40′46″E
Type: Stratovolcano
Info: Last erupted in March 28, 2005 killing over 600 people. One of the craters is 1km X 2km in size. Large enough to produce a violent Earth changing explosion. In the past, Mount Talang has shown weakness to earthquakes in the local Sumatra area. Meaning Mount Talang often erupts after a series of moderate to strong earthquakes in the region.
Tandikat: A twin volcano with Mount Singgalang located NNE of Mount Tandikat.
Image: [link to en.wikipedia.org]
Elevation: 2,438 m / 7,999 ft
Location: 0°25′57.30″S 100°19′1.69″E
Type: Stratovolcano
Info: Historically, only Tandikat has erupted but the eruption of Singgalang is always possible. The sprawling capitol of Padang Panjang, population of roughly 900,000, sits at the base of Tandikat.
Media Reports:
[link to www.timesonline.co.uk]
There was also the possibility that the seismic activity could set off eruptions, with three big volcanoes in Indonesia's West Sumatra — Merapi, Talang and Tandikat.
"There seems to be a relationship between volcanoes and earthquakes. They are all part of the same tectonic system," Gibson said.
[link to www.brisbanetimes.com.au]
"There are three big volcanoes in West Sumatra - Merapi, Talang and Tandikat. We fear that this quake might cause volcanic eruptions there," he said.
Experts have said the city is most at risk from a final segment along the zone shifting to unleash a massive amount of energy.
The zone's other segments have already cracked, including a large portion off Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra, which triggered the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people.
There are fears among officials and geologists that these three volcanoes may erupt and/or explode violently. Remember, Krakatau was the same size as these before it exploded in the past. History can and will repeat itself.
Peace |

this vid from that thread is VERY interesting. the magma chamber is KNOWN to be filling, yet there is NO uplift around the caldera. Yellowstone BREATHES, rising up and down periodically. the fact there is NO uplift at Toba tells me the magma chamber is PRESSURISING. I am not convinced by the scientist's reassurances that nothing will happen. anyway, his measurements were taken between 1993 and 2001, 3 years BEFORE this recent activity started.
