Re: Tsunami confirmed - may hit New Zealand UPDATE: Tsunami warning cancelled
LATEST: A tsunami alert for the Pacific has been cancelled following a series of powerful quakes off Santo, Vanuatu today.

The 7.8 magnitude and a 7.1 magnitude quakes hit at 11.03 NZ time and 15 minutes later and the epicentres were located around 373 km north-northwest of Santo, Vanuatu, at a depth of 33 km, the US Geological Survey said. A third 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit at 12.48 New Zealand time.

The quakes generated a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. The magnitude was not immediately clear, but the centre downgraded all warnings shortly after 1pm NZ time.

It earlier said the tsunami might be destructive along the coasts near the epicentre of the two large quakes, which were between Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

As of about 13.15pm (NZ time) the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre cancelled all warnings.

Tsunami Warning After Quakes In Pacific

A tsunami warning was issued in the south-west Pacific after two huge undersea earthquakes in the region.

The quakes struck between Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, one with a magnitude of 7.8 and the other 7.3.

But they only generated a tiny wave and the warning was later withdrawn.

The alert covered 11 nations, including Papua New Guinea and the popular resort islands of Fiji and New Caledonia, as well as Vanuatu.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, based in Hawaii, also issued a tsunami watch for the wider western Pacific.

This incuded Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and the nations of American Samoa and Samoa.

Authorities in New Caledonia, a French territory, evacuated people from the island's eastern shore and from the nearby Loyalty Islands to higher ground, police said.

On Fiji, schools and offices close to the sea were closed and hotels were advised to take tourists to safety.

The drama came just one week after a series of tsunamis devastated the Samoa islands, killing over 170 people.

Earlier on Wednesday, a 6.7-magnitude quake struck off the Philippines, but there was no tsunami warning.
