Volcanologists in Vanuatu are closely monitoring the Gaua volcano to consider whether to move its alert to level two.

The volcano located in the centre of the Gaua island in northern Vanuatu has been spitting gasses and ash since late September and has been on alert level one since the 29th.

The highest volcano alert level is five.

A senior vulcanologist at the geohazards department, Douglas Charley, says his team has recorded more activity since last night.

“Very late yesterday the team started to observe an increase of a high volcanic high frequency. The level remains at one and we’ll be trying to observe this until the next 48 hours. If it’s increasing [further], then we’ll be putting it [up] to level two.”
Douglas Charley says they have one monitoring station in the field, but are now requesting more to get more reliable data.

Gaua volcano in Vanuatu is showing signs that it could be headed towards an eruption. News reports from the island nation in the south Pacific Ocean mention "increased seismic activity, generating sulphurous gas and ash into the atmosphere and affecting water supplies." However, officials in Vanuatu have only raised Gaua's alert status to 1 on a scale of 5 and stories of previous evacuations suggest that people might not take the volcano that seriously if it does continue to rumble:

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has confirmed a small tsunami was generated by a large earthquake off Vanuatu but has now cancelled warnings, saying the danger is likely to have passed.

...Mr Langley described the quake as "a noticeable, long-rolling shake" that lasted about 30 seconds.

There had been a number of earthquakes since the shake that triggered last week's Samoa tsunami, and "quite a bit" of volcanic activity on the island of Gaua, in the Baker Islands group to the north.
