Mayan elder says world won't end in 2012

A Mayan elder says he is sick of people asking him whether the world will end on December 21, 2012.

Apolinario Chile Pixtun says the date will not bring the end of the world - despite claims the Mayan calendar shows that time will "run out".

"I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff," he told the Daily Telegraph.

Mr Pixtun, a Guatemalan, says the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan ideas.

A significant time period for the Mayans does end on the date, and enthusiasts have found a series of astronomical alignments they say coincide in 2012.

The Mayan civilization, based in modern day Mexico and Central America, reached its height from 300 AD to 900 AD and had a talent for astronomy.

Its Long Count calendar begins in 3,114 BC, marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns. Thirteen was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas, and the 13th Baktun ends around December 21, 2012.

A Mayan stone tablet found in Mexico in the 1960s says something is supposed to happen involving Bolon Yokte, the god of war and creation, in 2012 - but the end of the prophesy is illegible.

"It's a special anniversary of creation," said David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin.

"The Maya never said the world is going to end, they never said anything bad would happen necessarily, they're just recording this future anniversary on Monument Six."

Why do these Mayans think they know everything?

Seriously, though. They must think we're freaking crazy over here. I can remember how insane I thought people were over in Congo when they started a riot because they thought some dude was using witchcraft on the soccer field. But the end of the world over some ancient calendar? They must think we're totally nuts.

Re: Mayan elder says world won't end in 2012
correct....

much like the cartuche's in egypt, mayan elders names often had a nice 'frog glyph' which symbolises from whom they were born. So too with the calenders which have a frog glyph also, symbolising the end of one and the beginning of another.

basically a lot of panic about.....er....a new calendar.

given they were originally quite large and made of gold, many were lost and/or melted down by the spanish.

...had they still survived my only concern would be not to get accidentally flattenned by one....! cool2

Re: Mayan elder says world won't end in 2012
End of an an old paradigm and beginning of a new one. We come to the end of ourselves and begin a new life united with the Father. Jesus said, "I and the Father are one." He is the first begotten of the Father. We come after Him and are the sons/daughters of God. We claim we are one with the Father, but we are not until He brings us there. Every physical phenomenon in the universe is a manifestation or a reaction of what is happening in the spiritual plane. Its very simple folks. Relilgion makes it hard, because they shroud every truth in a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in mysticism, wrapped in self=gain, wrapped in.........well, you get what I mean.
