I thnk that Mozart's 21st piano concerto is awesome.

Especially how and why it came to be written and what happened next.

Yeah haven't even got to start posting any mozart pieces afro in my mind mozart and bach are untouchable as far as compositional genius
 Quoting: shapeshifter

knowing nothing about music theory but being a music lover anyway, I have to say Mozart and JS Bach sound to me like the most beautiful logic or math. My gut says to me that listening to their music is like listening to a Steven Hawking (sans the robot voice) take the incredibly complex nature of the universe and boiling it down to a set of arithmetic principles/ equations and then explaining it to a moron like myself.
Those guys were hooked into something greater than themselves when they were creating.

Not to say that someone like a Beethoven or a Puccini or a Wagner et al can't rip your heart to shreds, It's just imho something slightly different.

Beethoven's 9th.

Listen to the whole thing on a long drive. Very powerful.

It takes you through a very long journey of emotions, and in the end, a triumph. It's just beautiful.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11
2nd Movement "Romance - Larghetto"

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 653227

Just heard this last week, a young woman studying piano with our symphony conductor played it in recital as a warm up to a competition she is going to.
The conductor (also a world class pianist) played the symphonic reduction score on a second piano. It was truly an amazing performance. From FairbanksAlaska.

Love the Flower Duet and that is a very well done version.

Anyone want to weigh in on Slavic composers ? I really like Moussorgksy's Pictures at an Exhibition (the piano version, more than the orchestral version).

For sheer vocal / emotional power stripped down to fundamentals, I would have to go with Verdi's Requiem. Got to sing it once in a big choir with an excellent orchestra and soloists, that was definitely transformational music.

Thanks to the OP and all the posters, what a great late-night thread !

A 3RD POSTER VOTE HERE FOR RACHMANINOFF. THE MAN COULD COMPOSE LIKE SNOW & WIND SWEEPING ACROSS THE RUSSIAN STEPPES. EVOCATIVE OF THE GEOGRAPHY.

DITTO FOR VIVALDI AND BAROQUE ERA. YOU CAN SMELL FRAGRANT TUSCANY IN THE AIR WHEN IT PLAYS. ITS MAGICAL STUFF.

BUT FOR SOME ODD REASON, NOTHING PLEASES ME MORE THAN TO HEAR AN ACOUSTIC/INSTRUMENTS ONLY VERSION OF THE WEXFORD CAROL. THE PLAINTIVE SOLITUDE OF SHEPHERDING LIVESTOCK ON A GREY COLD WINTER SOLSTICE DAY COMES TO MIND.

IT IS A TIME CAPSULE OF THE 12TH CENTURY LIKE NO OTHER PIECE OF MUSIC I KNOW. I GROW DEEPER IN APPRECIATION OF IT AS TIME PASSES.

the humanity
 Quoting: shugendo ascetic master killer

You got it, my master killer friend. It is said that when Beethoven debuted this piece that the people were so moved by this movement (2nd) from his 7th symphony that they rushed the stage and made him conduct it again. It so perfectly captured the pathos of the time and the struggle of the peasantry that it struck a nerve like no other music ever had.

I also read a a channeled book long ago in which the spirits were asked if there was any human music that could qualify as the music of the god's and they cited this exact movement of this symphony.

Finally, this was played at the memorial service I believe for the Oklahoma City bombing victims.
