Re: what's the greatest classical music piece you've heard?Quote

Wow, what a great thread. Many beautiful pieces I'd never heard before, and outstanding versions of the ones I did know.

I'm offering two different links/versions of a 10 minute piece I hope some will enjoy: the 2nd movement (Adagio) of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (classical guitar and orchestra).

The first link is (IMO) the finest rendition of this work ever done, by guitarist Pepe Romero and the small Academy of St. Martin in the Field orchestra -- they put so much into this performance, you'd have to be made of stone not to "feel" the emotion in the music.

Toward the end of the video, the camera shows a closeup of a young violinist, still playing, with tears in his eyes. The old (blind) man shown in cutaways in the video is Joaquin Rodrigo (the composer) himself, along with his wife.

BUT

The above video clip cuts short, omitting the last few bars that contain the guitar's simple ascending harmonics -- crucial to the end of this work, which Rodrigo wrote during his darkest hour.

Rodrigo's wife had just delivered their first child, stillborn, and Rodrigo's wife was still in critical condition. They had honeymooned in Aranjuez. This adagio movement is the heart of the concerto, containing all Rodrigo's emotions: grief, fear, hope, sorrow, anger with God, and finally, at the end, a resigned peace that ends with delicate ascending harmonics, representing his child's soul ascending to heaven.

So, I provide a SECOND LINK to an acclaimed John Williams (guitarist) version, which is outstanding (many peoples' favorite), and brings closure.

The link to the Romero version:

The link to the Williams version:

BTW: this is my first attempt at posting links. I'll check them after this posts and if I've messed up, I'll edit. Here's hoping...

Thanks again for this wonderful thread.

Lots of great stuff in this thread. Here are some of my favorites not mentioned yet (that I saw):

Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba"
(A wonderful short piece if you only have a few minutes and need some music to cheer you up.)

Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto

Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, finale
Carl Sagan used the final bars of this in the last episode of Cosmos to underscore all that would be lost if we humans didn't take better care of ourselves and the planet we live on. I couldn't imagine a better choice. (If you don't have time for all of it, at least listen from 4:55 to the end - an immense struggle and triumph captured in a mere 90 seconds of music.)
