My Mom Got A Flu Shot and NOW Shows Signs of Guillian Barre

She went to her gen. practice doc on Monday morning, got a seasonal flu shot..not swine flu, and collapsed from weakness that afternoon. She was paralized from her waist down, numbness and tingling inher legs and feet and her arms. Serious chest and muscle pain, cannot walk at all, barely talk, hard time breathing. In hospital now on verge of pneumonia. Docs can't figure out what's wrong with her.
Damn flu shot. All signs point to Guillian barre.

Mom is a lively, spunky very healthy 83. She has no history of the typlical health issues that are so common now--no heart, kidney, lung problems, no cancer and she smokes, no cholestrol or high blood pressure problems. This makes me sooooooo pissed.

That almost sounds like a triggered stroke.

My mother wouldn't listen to me about vaccines. She did what her doctor told her to do, without question.

I hope your Mom comes back to you.

Guillian Barre is an ASCENDING PARALYSIS.

Starts with weakness feet and slowly....ascends. It is not a "from the waist down" paralysis.

I DID warn her..she does what doc tells her to do like most good patients...I warned her, and my sisters and many friends. That is all you can do!

OP, those symptoms are probably coming too fast to be Guillian Barre. My mom developed Guillian Barre after her flu shot in 1985. Spent NINE MONTHS in the hospital, 3 of them on a respirator. (12/23/1985 thru 09/12/86) Permanently handicapped and left with serious health problems ever since. Her symptoms began mildly within a month after getting the shot, tingling in feet/hands, then legs/arms, finally sudden extreme weakness that would drop her to the ground with no warning. She went from Dr. to Dr. with no diagnosis for weeks, I think most thought she was a hypochondriac! Finally ended up at the ER with a doc who had seen it in the 70's and knew what it was. Believe they did a mylogram (spelling?) for diagnosis confirmation. If/when you get her to a doc, tell them to be sure and check for Guillian Barre! Many doc's don't know enough about it to even consider it as a diagnosis, and you want it CONFIRMED, not assumed.

That is also why I posted this thread...TO WARN that this crap is a real threat! So all those ignorant butt nuts out there who claim these damn vaccines are safe are FOOLS.

Hi Walrus, some people develope it fster than others...some take days, to weeks. But some within hours. I have been researching this all morning. Looking for any other informal material anyone else may have too. My sister is at teh hospital with her now and is going to talk withthe docs about GB.

I had Guillian Barre when I was 23 years old [1964] and 6 months pregnant and it DID come on fast. Not flu shot related at all. There was a stomach flu going around and I did overwork greatly the days before hand, and noted in talking to people who had the disease afterwards that overwork, stressing the muscles, was a factor always present. This is also true of regular polio.

One morning I was trying to iron and the iron kept slipping out of my fingers. The doctor told me to go to bed and rest. Couple hours later I got up and was walking down the hall and my knees buckled. I could not roll over, could not get up, weak all over, and it took hours for the woman downstairs to think to check out the thumping I was doing on the floor. Into the hospital right away and within hours was on a respirator. Totally quadraplegic and could not breath or eat (GI trac paralyzed too) for 3 weeks. I move "normal" but I do have a body wide muscular weakness, fatigue very easily. It did take me 2 years to get back into high heels, a goal of mine at the time.

Sorry to hear it K. My father in law caught Guillians Barre from a flu shot a few years ago. It's a nightmare we are still coping with.
