Good question. You would have to ask the author. We can speculate, but the author would be the real source. I think he's dead. But it is a fantasy. Fantascies can be imagined in any color you like. Actually, I never imagined any color of skin while reading the books. I just enjoyed the story. It flowed in wonderful images. But I don't remember any skin colors per say. Have a great day.

Hi, Tolkien wrote the books while he was out at war, not sure if it was ww1 or ww2 but he would go back to his barracks and write parts of the story after serving on the frontlines to forget the horrors he was witnessing, i guess those wars were mostly between white folks.

He served in WW1. And much of Lord of the Rings were completed during the peak of WW2,so war is a huge part of the story.
