How Were Cell Calls Made From Planes on 9/11?

I was flying yesterday and I started thinking about 9/11 and how people claimed that they received calls from loved ones on hijacked planes. How is that possible? Unless you have a satallite phone how would your cell work while flying? Even if you cell phone could connect to a tower on the ground (which Im doubtful) wouldnt you lose your signal because you are traveling so fast?

Also, companies (Verizon for one) verified calls. One of the callers actually spoke with an operator. I've called from my phone on the plane before 9-11. After, it hasn't been possible unless the plane's on the ground. And, at that time, they actually had phones on the plane that you could use IN FLIGHT to make calls. Some of those were used in addition to cell phones.

Those calls were real. Family members really spoke to their loved ones. Are you thinking that wives only THOUGHT they were speaking to their husbands? The calls were faked? I sure know my husband's voice.

Not everything is some big conspiracy. And there's no conspiracy here. Get better facts before wild, baseless assumptions get the best of your thinking.

I wish the mythbusters team did a special on 911. I think this one, given the technolology available in 2001 would be busted.

If I'm in an aircraft, say 35,000 ft. up and over a city, is that any different than me being on the ground and 35,000 feet from the nearest cell tower? In either case, it's around 6-7 miles. I've made cell phone calls from some pretty remote places where I doubt there was a cell tower for miles.

bullshit. At 600mph and with the line of sight to several towers at once it would have been a cluster. If there were real calls made they werent from a plane.

Any pilot must know this(that has tried to use a cell phone in flight), but I think most pilots that make their living flying can't mention such a thing since they aren't supposed to be using cell phones while in flight.

Flew quite a bit in '03 and '04,east coast to mi, tried to use my cell every time with ZERO sucess. Don't work on no aeroplane!
