After installing McAfee on my desktop, the computer is super slow in any functions. It sounds like it loading and loading when I first boot up and almost freezes even after 10 minutes after powering up.
I have heard that McAfee is known for slowing down computers.
Thanks for your advice. |

I had a 80gb hard disk drive running xp that i took to another country and installed it as a secondary drive on a windows 2000 machine. it is not dual boot or anything. nearly everything on the xp hard drive works (programs, documents etc.) with no problems apart from some mp3 and mpg, wmv, mov, avi files. VLC player, Media Player Classic, WMP9 can not play the files but will play all others including new files that i download.
any ideas as to why this is and what i can do?
Surprised the programs still work if the old drive is just installed as a slave drive...
Sounds like a media licensing issue - often media purchased in uk cannot be used in other countries. This prevents people paying dirt cheap price for same goods in countries with a slower economy etc. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 799944
dont think so because some of the video files are films i made myself. also sometimes when i click on an mp3 from the xp drive it plays a totally different random song. is there any program that will scan for errors and fix corrupted file paths or anything?
would you recommend I start again and install the xp drive as a dual boot option at startup? |

McAfee is very slow - however the symptoms you describe suggest there is something else wrong as this is excessive.
Most likely reason is that you have another antivirus program installed at the same time. Look through the programs list in control panel > add/remove programs.
Look for another antivirus software (symantec, AVG, etc.)
Running two av solutions at once kills your PC.
It could also be the startup scan slowing things down depending on your configuration.
Check add remove programs first. |

Why not try downloading CCleaner (search for it in google). There is one bit for cleaning temp files etc, and something for scanniong and fixing registry problems. ITs quite a good bit of software though not sure it will do what you need it to. |

Where is the ANY key?
If there is a message saying to press this key, you have a virus. I recommend using Win AV 2010 to remove it. If that fails, try to "clean the drive". The best way is to rub the hard drive for a few minutes with a powerful magnet. If you dont have a magnet, try putting it in the microwave for 30 seconds at 800 Watts. DONT put it in for any longer though as it could damage the drive...
WTF? GUYS DONT DO THIS, THIS GUY IS A FUCKING IDIOT, YOU CAN'T PUT HDD's ON MICROWAVES, YOU ARE GOING TO DESTROY YOUR HARD DRIVE AND YOUR MICROWAVE, PLEAS IGNORE THIS IDIOT. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 355226

Try reinstalling video card drivers. Try the newest first. Then try older ones.
If that doesn't work and you have another video card try it.
Try taking out the 1tb drive and see if the problem persists.
XP with 2GB should be fine. Sounds like a video card issue. |

a few months ago the fan on my graphics card stopped and i think it ruined the card. I replaced it with a new geforce 9400 and it worked fine except when playing games. If i started a game the pc would freeze up and monitor would go black. I dont play alot of games so i didnt worry about it but now it is doing it after windows has been up for about 2 min so i cant do anything on it now.
I updated the graphics card drivers and updated direct x but it didnt help.
Any suggestions? |

Look for a program called "MemTest". Shut off all other programs and run it. It may take awhile to run. Let it run all the way through. You may have some bad RAM. |

Also, you should check your CPU fan. You may be running hot. I use a program called "SpeedFan". It will check fan speeds and temps. |

and that does not mean that you may have to go into Safemode and re-install something like VGA drivers in the first place to fix your screw up, of not deleting completly video card drivers, because some video card drivers did not do what they should do when installing video drivers that were newer.
As to starting up a computer and it goes into the BIOS, I am sure there is another part of the BIOS that tells the computer how to boot up. It usually has three options, like 1) Use the harddisk drive.
2) Boot up from a CD disk in the CD drive.
3) Boot up into the BIOS.
if that is not set up with the right options, then it got changed and you did not save the new BIOS settings when leaving the BIOS so now you boot where you ended up telling the computer to boot up to.
Anything else takes a little thought, or take the computer into a repair computer place and pay for it. |

1. Power down the computer
2. Unplug the power cord
3. Touch something metal to discharge any static electricity
4. Hold the power button in for 15 seconds to discharge flea power
5. Open the case
6. Remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes
7. Reinsert the battery, close case and plug the computer in
This should reset the BIOS back to default.
If this doesn't work then you may need to flash BIOS. |

I replaced the ram to see if that was the problem but it crashed with new ram.
i have a temp moniter in bios it was bouncing 36 - 40 and the machine crashed while i was watching the hardware monitor.
A friend suggested replaceing the power supply but i dont have a spare around to replace it with. I dont want to go spend $$ on a new one if that isnt the problem. Do you think it could be the power supply? |
