194 SCHOOLS =71,666 PUPILS

let's say half those kids have brothers/sisters who go to other schools that aren't closed and in 21 days, those brothers/sisters get sick, won't those other schools then close also for a time?

and say half those kids have two parents at home. those two parents are exposed by their sick kids who were home while the school was closed. the parents go to their places of employment and in 21 days do they close the work place for a time?

say half those kids have one parent at home, you get daycares involved. in 21 days the daycare closes for a time?

gonna get a bit messy isn't it?

from homeland security news wire.

School closings owing to swine flu could cost between $10 and $47 billion

The U.S. government urges schools to remain open, but there had already been at least 187 school dismissals across the country affecting at least 79,678 students; cost of closing all U.S. schools could reach billions of dollars

Closing schools and day care centers because of swine flu could cost between $10 billion and $47 billion, a report by the Brookings Institution think tank found. The U.S. government is urging schools to close only as a last resort, such as when large numbers of kids or staffers come down with swine flu.

AP reports, though, that in the month since classes began, many schools have closed. As of Monday, there had been at least 187 school dismissals across the country affecting at least 79,678 students, the Education Department said.

A report issued today by Brookings' Center on Social and Economic Dynamics estimated that the cost of closing all schools in the United States for four weeks would be between $10 billion to $47 billion. Brookings called that a conservative estimate.

Keeping kids home from school would require parents to stay home from work too, and some of those parents are health care workers, the report said.

The report also said:

* The cost of mass school closures in selected cities would be $65 million for Washington, D.C., $1.1 billion for New York City, and $1.5 billion for Los Angeles County.
* Mass school closures would cause 12 percent of workers to be absent; absenteeism could be higher in lower-income households with only one worker.
* The value of lost class time is estimated to be $6.1 billion.

just remember, 21 days is the incubation period for the going around flu that isn't seasonal flu for which many schools are closing for a time.

This all seems mighty convenient given that cash-strapped boards of education get to save a lot of money that would otherwise go to salaries during this shut down...It takes one's eye off the architects of the economic crisis and has you focusing on the fear of the illusion of pandemics.

It wouldn't surprise me that when all this is over, they find that there really was no need for all these closures. But they will counter this criticism by trying to justify it by saying that the closures prevented illness and deaths.

I'm in Eastern Kentucky. I don't know about the other counties around here, but in this one the schools were closed two weeks ago on Thursday, Friday and Monday because of illness. They disinfected the schools.

A lot of good that did, this past week they were closed again on Thursday and Friday. I haven't heard yet if they'll be open tomorrow.

That first closing came on the heels of giving kids seasonal flu shots at school ten days before. My grandson didn't take a shot and he hasn't had flu, so far. He does have a bad cold, but he saw the doctor on Friday and she said it was definitely not flu of any type.

Re: 194 SCHOOLS IN MICHIGAN CLOSED DUE TO SWINE FLU!!! **list included**
i just stumbled on this site. I live in Lewisburg,West Virginia and my 14 year old son is just getting over a confirmed case of swine flu.I am a nurse, and I have seen alot! I have NEVER seen flu symptoms anything like this.As soon as he was diagnosed, I set his room up like an isolated ICU unit (even had HEPA filters and UV lights)I used masks, gloves, etc when I cared for him, & HE WORE A MASK IF HE HAD TO LEAVE HIS ROOM. I was trying to keep my other 2 kids away from him.I also was trying to keep him out of the hospital and I was in contact with his doctor (for updates, info, etc) My son is 14 years old 6foot 3inches, about 160 pounds, athletic, healthy, no medical conditions. His temperature would go up to 105 degrees! I was using tylenol and motrin, had him in ice baths, everything I could do! It still took about 4 hours until his fever would start to go down, then it stayed at 102.9 degrees. I was forcing fluid in him, I even started waking him up every 2-3 hours to cough and deep breath to keep his lungs clear. A few times we thought he was better, and then it was like a bomb went off! 105 degrees again!! The thoughts of my 5 year old getting that sick terrifies me!! All 3 of my kids go to different schools, but ride the same bus. Even though my 5 year old and 11 year old were not sick, I have been keeping them home too. Guess what?! They didn't get it, I know when they go back to schhol lots of kids there have it . Who knows how many more over the weekend now. They are not going today (Monday 10/26/09), I want to wait and see how many more got it over the weekend. I checked on our county school policy and GET THIS: "AS LONG AS THEY HAVE ENOUGH STAFF TO TEACH, SCHOOL WILL REMAIN IN SESSION"! aM i SENDING MY 5 YEAR OLD AND 11 YEAR OLD INTO A DEATH TRAP? Just thought I would share this with yall. The lady on here who was mad that her sons school woulndt shut until 5 cases thought that was bad!!! THIS IS CRAZY, IRRESPOSIBLE AND UNBELIEVABLE!! This flu is just starting, it WIILL get worse in the next 2 months, and since I know what my kids schools policy is, I dont want to send the younger 2 back at all! My husband told me they will put me in jail if I keep them home and I really dont give a shit.I wonder if a student dies if they will shut down?! Just wanted to let yall know how stupid some parts of this country are. I am completely OUTRAGED!! By the way-last week 30% of his high school was out with swine flu. Although most of them were not as sick as him, they might not have had actual swine. Also no one here has had the H1N1 vaccine, and probably wont, or at the least it will be about a month before they are available. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA YEAR 2009?

Flu Fears: Some schools closed due to illness

Flu fears are closing more mid-Michigan schools.

Standish-Sterling Community Schools will be closed Monday, October 26, 2009,

Shepherd Public Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday.

School leaders say just too many kids are calling in sick. More than 100 schools across the state closed last week due to the problem.

Under state rules, a school with more than 25 percent of its students off cannot count that as an official day.
