POLL: Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?
 Yes
 No
 Blank (View Results)

You know... I noticed that every computer I've bought in the last 2 or 3 years does NOT come with a dialup modem..

This used to be standard equipment...

So if the net goes down and GLP has to revert to old school BBS style dialup coms how many of you would even be able to connect with your current setups?

I used to run a rather large bbs way way back in the day and I COULD do it again if the need arose but how many people could even use it?

Today with unlimited long distance plans this would be a good backup communications plan incase TPTB pulled the net...
Few will listen,
Of the few who listen, fewer still will understand,
Understanding does not mean believe,
Of the handful who believe, most may not know what to do,
Those who even know, how many will actually do ?
And the rare ones who have done it.......
Need not listen to you anymore.

I've always insisted on one, just in case. My livelihood is dependent on my 'net access.

An additional question might be; does your ISP offer dial-up as an option?

the isp offering dialup wouldn't matter

you'd actually dial straight into the GLP phone number and connect to our modems IF I set it up that way

I have several actually, just in case, but the way things are progressing here, i doubt i will ever need them, 3G is amazingly affordable, and comes in all sorts of forms from usb set up units to phones preinstalled etc. And then there is the oncoming phenomena of wireless broadcast from homeunits making for a new subnet for Interneters to leapfrog around on.

Very true. The single point of failure then becomes your carrier, and your modem bank. But, better than doing nothing.

I'd be willing to sign up for something like that if you offered it.

I voted no, but just remembered that I bought mine with a 56k modem as an optional accessory. It's kind of a moot point though as all phone lines that I know off have been removed from the house.

Re: Does Your Computer Have A Dialup Modem?Quote

You don't have to buy a computer with a modem.

You just have to take out the same modem card from any of your old computers and install it in your desktop [if you are using a normal size desktop that is].

Best to have the modem drivers ready ahead of time... searching for old drivers can be quite a headache, and if the net is down...

I just checked and apparently I have one, didn't think I did. But, I have no phone line in my house that is active. I mean they are there, but we all have cellphones and have no need for a landline.

The "leet" BBSes were those that had multiple phone lines. You could CHAT online with someone at the same time you're using the BBS, how COOL IS THAT?!

Good question. I'll buy a modem dedicated to me a xx number of others. :-)

Another thought. Suppose I needed to pay for access with some alternative currency (*cough*silver*cough*). How would one go about getting/keeping backup services, if conducting traditional transactions goes away (paypal) ?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 802591

well you can buy what is called a ringdown line from the phone company that will let people call in to the same phone number and it will allow separate connections..

It's limited to the size of the phone line you run in...

Like you'd have to run a t-1 line into the modem on the box to get 24 people dialed in at the same time...

A t-1 line runs about $400 a month right now soo it would be kind of expensive to pull it off and we'd need something a lot larger than a t-1 connection to handle the normal volume on glp...
